I bought this charger for charging the long re-chargeable battery for my camera. I've had other Canon cameras and this charger is basically the same as the others. The rechargeable battery will drop and slide into the charger slot... 2 prong plug folds in and out of the charger unit, making it easy to store or pack for a trip. There is a light indicator that shows an orange glow for charging and green glow for completely charged. This Canon CG-800 external battery charger is a must-have to charge the BP-800 series batteries for Canon flash camcorders. It charges a battery almost twice as fast as it would if it were connected to the camera, and it allows you to free up and use you camera should you have a fully-charged spare battery ready for filming. Spare batteries are so easy to charge and maintain if you have this charger. It's a bit expensive but well worth it for its time-saving use and functionality independent of your camcorder.Customer Review: Convenient Charger

I first went with a far less expensive third-party charger for these batteries. It seemed to work. But, when I tried to use the charged battery the camera, the camera told me the battery was dead. Save yourself some aggravation and purchase this charger.
Also note that your camera may have a built-in battery which needs charging as well. Even if you use an external charger, you should occasionally charge the battery through the camera's AC adapter to insure that everything is fully charged.

This is compact and lightweight. The plug folds into the charger itself so it stores flat. I took this on a trip to Asia and only needed a plug adapter to use it (no voltage converter needed). The charger can handle up to 240V.
I would only get this if you have 2 batteries for your camcorder - you can still record while recharging the other battery. If you have only 1 battery, just use the in-camcorder charging feature but keep in mind this option will be slower.
