Customer Review: A must have accessory if you shoot outdoors

The Canon DM-100 is an excellent accessory, I use this microphone with my Canon VIXIA HF200. I had a horrible experience recording an outdoor wedding where a light breeze made the audio all but unusable. With this microphone and the wind sock, the wind noise is reduced DRAMATICALLY and voices come through much more clearly. One thing to note is that the microphone does not eliminate all wind noise completely, especially if the wind is blowing swiftly. This microphone is very sensitive and can pick up conversations 15-20 feet away without much trouble. Without the fuzzy windsock, the microphone itself is 3" tall, 5" long and boom is 3/4" in diameter. When it is mounted, it is almost as long as the camera, but it is fairly light. It weighs just 2.7 ounces (without sock). When it is connected to the camera, the on board stereo microphones are disabled. The microphone has three settings: 120 degrees, 90 degrees and Shot Gun. I usually leave it on 120 and picks up anything in the field of view of the camera (and also out of view). Shot gun is ideal if you are looking to capture a single speaker and cut out ambient chatter. This microphone has one excellent feature that I didn't see in any of the reviews: it is mounted on a base that moves slightly, about +/-7 degrees in any direction. This cuts down on noise as you move the camera and keeps you from putting excess strain on the boom if you bump it on accident.
If you do a fair amount of outdoor shooting, this accessory is a must have. It makes outdoor footage USEFUL, because even with the 'wind reduction' feature activated in the camera, the wind noise can make the entire clip a disappointment. While this accessory isn't exactly cheap, it will make your recordings much better. I recommend this accessory to anyone who takes a significant amount of outdoor footage and wants to make better home movies.
