Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon BG-E2N Battery Grip for Canon 20D, 30D, 40D & 50D Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Package)Customer Review: Original Canon battery grip for Canon 50D (comes with AA battery tray) Summary: 5 Stars
first, let's talk about shipping is amazing fast! I order it a day before Thanksgiving and it arrived today noon, a day after Thanksgiving. so the shipping rate is amazing. it wasn't thanksgiving it probably arrived yesterday.
( it may take longer in different places, I'm from NYC )
second, this battery grip is made by Canon, so it feels and matches the body identical. if you are wondering how is feels about the quality, then you should go ahead and grab the grip on your DSLR. the feeling that you get from it is the feeling that you expect from the battery grip. (mine is Canon 50D)
* This product comes with a 6 AA battery tray so no need to spend your money to get it. the battery grip is made in Japan.
Installation is easy, takes less then a minute. plus it has an instruction in it. after installed it my 50D looks a lot more professional but camera with the grip plus a Canon flash, it feels a lot heavier. but i can deal with it, and it is not that a big deal.
over all good product and i would recommend it
Customer Review: Great grip Summary: 5 Stars
This is the third Canon grip that I currently own. I use a 30D, 40D, and now a 50D for event photography, and my first grip was the BG-E2 for the 30D. The 40D, and 50D both have the BG-E2N grip, which offers better dust and moisture seals, but both look and feel the same from an operators perspective.
The very early grips had electrical contact issues, but that problem was resolved by the time the 30D was shipping several years ago. I like the extra real estate offered by the grip, the extra battery power, and the fact that it allows me to use the hand strap in place of the neck strap. That alone is worth the cost to me, as I can let a camera hang from my hand with a grip and hand strap all day long in total comfort, even with a big lens like the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L, as opposed to being beaten to near death with the camera bouncing off of my neck and chest as I move about. It also makes the camera ready for instant action. You really have to try the setup to understand, but the combination really delivers.
Customer Review: Wouldn't shoot without it. Summary: 5 Stars
I'll never again shoot without a verti grip. Even for landscape oriented shots, I have more camera to hold on to and that means a steadier shot and more comfort. In vertical shots, I can't imagine going back. The controls are perfectly placed and it makes shooting just that much more fun. This grip does feel just slightly plasticky and hollow, but it is solid and attaches solidly to the camera. If you have clients, you also get the added bonus of having a more professional and impressive looking camera to wow them with. Unfortunately, you can't use rechargeable batts in the supplied AA battery cartridge, voltage is too low, but at least you can keep some alkalines in there for emergencies, which you probably wont be having if you keep two camera batteries in the grip giving you over 2000 shots on a charge. I actually like the added weight of the grip which helps balance out longer lenses and again, tends to give me a bit more stability.
Customer Review: Necessary for sports photography Summary: 5 Stars
I have a 40d which I use for fastpitch softball games. This grip and my 70-200 f2.8L IS USM complete the nominal setup i use for 90% of my shots. I sometimes add the 2x telextender. If the subject is backlit and not actually in the game, I will also use the built in flash on the 40d. In a day, it is not uncommon for me to shoot about 1000 photos. All this is to say that this all points to needing more than one battery and to needing a handle to help control all the weight when framing vertically. The BG-E2N has never failed me. With the two batteries installed, I never have come close to running out of power. I always get full 6fps framing rate and it helps balance out the forward weight balance due to the big L lens.
The one drawback is that the whole rig now has close to the size and weight of the Mark I. Oh well. It still fits in my Lowepro Fastpack the tele zoom on, so I am good to go. You will be too.
Customer Review: Great Product, Although pricey. Summary: 5 Stars
Just wanted to add that the grip works as stated by the other positive reviewers. Just a word of caution. If the grip is not firmly screwed to the camera, you might think as I did during a shoot that the batteries had run down when the power went to O. Rushed to charge the batteries , charged them, put them back in same thing. The problem was not the batteries but the grip screw had worked itself ever so slightly loose losing contact and giving me a dead camera. At least on my grip it must be fairly snug. I know it seems so obvious, but just a warning anyways, to those who get really excited when things don't work just quite right.
Good for 1000 pictures without the flash with 2 batteries in. Slightly less with IS lenses and live view is electrical intensive also. Went for 4 days on a shoot to west yellowstone this winter, with never having to charge the batteries and using a variety of lenses.
