Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon CLI-8 4-Color Ink TankCustomer Review: Are all cartridges in the pack used at the same rate? Analysis within Summary: 5 Stars
I have a Canon Photo Printer which takes six CLI-8 Canon Ink Cartridges. The cost of each individual ink cartridge ranges from around $12.50-15 (on Amazon) to 18.99 in Staples. So no matter how you buy the genuine Canon Ink Cartridges keeping yourself ready to print photos is expensive.
You can get a better per cartridge price if you buy them in packs. In that case each individual cartridge is a little less expensive. Canon package CL-8C (Cyan), CL-8M (Magenta), CL-8Y (Yellow), and CL-8BK (Black) as a pack ($40-44 on Amazon). When cartridges are sold in packs you might think those colors are used at similar rates... but that is not so.
I have kept track of the usage of the cartridges over a long period of time and would like to share these results with you.
Number of cartridges used
CL-8M Magenta = 5
CL-8Y Yellow = 8
CL-8B Black = 6
CL-8PC Photo Cyan = 6
CL-8PM Photo Magenta = 8
CL-8C Cyan = 4
My usage shows that yellow is used the most, followed closely by Photo Magenta, followed next by Black and Photo Cyan, and trailed by Cyan and Magenta. Note that I have a laser printer that I used for text otherwise the usage of the Black Cartridge would have been a lot higher.
I buy most of my color photo ink on-line from Amazon. However now that Staples began (again) accepting CL-8 cartridges for Staples Rewards in their recycling empty cartridges program, I wanted to analyze my usage to see which cartridges I should buy at Staples using my Staples Rewards.
My original thought was to buy Canon CLI-8PC Photo Cyan Ink Tank andCanon CLI-8PM Photo Magenta Ink Tank since they don't come in a pack. But given the usage chart above, it is clear that I should buy extra Yellow and Photo Magenta.
Customer Review: I love my Canon Pixma printers and CLI-8 4-pack ink Summary: 5 Stars
I have been very happy with my Canon Pixma printers. I currently have one in my office and one at my home office. I bought my office machine last summer. Then, this past winter, when my HP printer at my home office died, I replaced it with a Canon, as well. I've broken off my long term relationship with HP and have never looked back. Not once. While I recognize this is not a review about the printers, the fact remains that the printers are worthless without the ink. One thing I like about the Canon pixma ink cartridges is that they are priced significantly lower than the cartridges I purchased for my HP. The reason is simple: Instead of one color ink cartridge, there are 3 color cartridges. When the yellow runs out, simply replace the yellow. In the long run, this ends up being a lot more economical. Additionally, the print head is installed in the printer itself, not in the individual print cartridges, which also saves money. The CLI-8 4-pack is the best way to purchase these cartridges and I have not found a lower price than that offered at Amazon.com. I hate running out of ink, so I keep a couple packages on hand. When I am running low, I place an order online. Shipping and handling are free, there is no sales tax, and the price can't be beat. And yes, I am thrilled with the print quality of my Pixmas. I'm a Realtor. I print MLS sheets, letters, marketing materials, glossy brochures, and even post cards in limited quantity. I am particular about the quality of print and have been more than satisfied with the cartridges and printers. Only once did I have a problem with an ink cartridge. I kept receiving an error message telling me that the wrong tank was in the printer. I kept taking it out and putting it back in, turning the printer off, then on again. (Did the hokey pokey and I turned myself around....) Finally called Canon only to find out that the print cartridge was defective. They sent me a new one, so I can't really complain. Canon printers and ink ROCK!
Customer Review: Things to consider... Summary: 5 Stars
ALL printers eat ink and that's a fact. This bundle does not include the big black ink tank. Know that anywhere you go (office supply, whatever) this is how it's packaged by Canon. I have checked all the local office retail outlets and these babies run $15-$20 more plus gas and aggravation. I personally like the convenience of being able to get the colors separately rather than in one cartridge as was the case with my old printer (if you use one color more than the rest, the whole cartridge is shot). This is practical for me, and those that print in limited color ranges in large quantities (I do alot of brochures, biz cards, etc).
If you're printing alot of photos (high ink saturation) you will fly through cartridges like crazy no matter the brand. I don't so mine last longer than usual. I have also purchased an ink saving software that has helped tremendously with savings.....you may want to consider that. The initial investment has paid for itself many times over. My prints still look great regardless.
I appreciate the way Canon divides the ink because I've tossed too many cartridges not only because of using one color more, but also because of error messages because of taking the cartridge out to "reset" the machine. Oh well, my old Dell printer deserves to be launched off a 12 story building!
Anyhow, consider software to save your ink if you print alot for biz purposes like me. Also, consider what you are saving by printing your own photos versus traditional photo processing and you might change your mind. Fact of the matter is, printers eat ink...and to the person who compares these small cartridges to a huge laser toner tank I can only say "get real"! Laser printers are much more expensive to operate, and are not practical for everyone.
Customer Review: First time user... Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Canon CLI-8 4-Color Multipack Ink Tanks to use with my GF's Canon MP970 photo printer. We've had both the printer and ink cartridge since christmas and have already put about 250 pics through the machine using just the factory settings. One of the tanks is indicating low but we are approaching the number of prints that the manufacturer said we'd get so thats no surprise. So far, the pics have turned out very impressive. The pics are sharp as can be, black actually shows up black, and the pics don't smear. We've always been taking our digital photos to places like cvs and even the Photo gurus at Ritz. The pics coming out of the MP970 are just as good if not better. Including the printer, paper, and cost of ink, the avg price per picture may be slightly higher than if you were to take them out to one of those places, but I personally think it is well worth the extra cost for convenience and quality management.
To sum things up, the Canon CLI-8 4-Color Multipack Ink Tanks worked very well with our MP970. Great looking pics! Very satisfied.
The only problem I had was with the shipping. Granted I live in a fairly quiet neighborhood, the delivery guy left the printer outside of the door in the rain. Luckily the printer was packed in a box which was in another box so nothing inside got wet and it wasn't stolen.
