Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Image Scanner (2168B002)

Customer Review: great scanner under $300 for artwork
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking to buy a professional scanner, until I saw that you can't get anything for less than $500 (my budget was $300).

I make high quality prints of my artwork, so I need a scanner that focuses on reflective images (as opposed to film/slides), without compromising image quality by throwing in extra features that I don't need.

After extensive research I chose the Cannon 8800. Based on expert reviews it seems like even though the Epson Perfection V500 and V600 have a higher resolution (6400 dpi) at a comparable price or higher-- the quality of the scanned image is still better with the cannon.

I just got mine, tested it and was impressed. The software has a dated, pre-OSX look, but again, what's important to me is the image quality, so I can live with it. It works fine with mac OSX 10.5.8. The scanner is also slimmer than I thought it would be.

I hope this review helps people looking for a good scanner to scan artwork. There seems to be no mention of this use of a scanner in online reviews, everyone focuses on photos/slides.

Great scanner for a fair price. totally recommended.

Customer Review: Home Run
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a dedicated film scanner that just crashed. I did not want to spend that kind of money again to digitize my last batch of 35mm slides, so I opted for the 8800F after seeing its high ratings over so many people. I downloaded all the software, but decided to use Photoshop CS3 downloading my slides. In Photoshop just click on File, Import, CanoScan 8800F, and it will pull up the 8800F ScanGear software hardware that comes with the unit. I did not really see much difference under magnification between 1200, 1600 or 2400 for my purposes (except it takes more time to scan as the resolution increases), so I set the output at 1200. I have everthing else in the advanced tab in ScanGear set to OFF, because I can better adjust things in Photoshop. I have an action recorded in Photoshop so that I can scan and save in three keystrokes; it could be done in one keystroke, but the ScanGear package requires two. All told, in less than four minutes I get four fairly good images, all for less than $200. Not a bad way to finish digitizing my slides. And the unit doubles as a document scanner, a plus over my dedicated film scanner. Good luck.

Customer Review: Easy scan of negatives
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this scanner to fulfil my New Years' resolution to digitalize all my photographs & negatives. This scanner serves both purposes well. I unpacked the equipment and loaded the software on my computer. Within 30 minutes I was loading negative strips into the cartridge and scanning them. Viola. It was that easy. I like that I can load as many as 12 negatives at a time. I also like that I get a preview of the negatives and can select which ones I actually want to scan and save. This saves time because it takes about one minute(ish) per negative to scan. After scanning I have the opportunity to modify, adjust, or change the digital picture file or save it. Saving the files is easy too. You can use the generic name the program provides or change the name. With two labradors supervising my project, I have discovered that a soft cloth and a can of air is helpful to keep hair out of the negative cartridge. I have only scanned one photo (am concentrating on the negatives right now) but it seems very easy too. For someone like me who has multimedia and wants to organize it in digital files, this piece of equipment is the answer.

Customer Review: Great for scanning old photos!
Summary: 5 Stars

Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Film/Negative/Photo Scanner (2168B002)

I bought this scanner to get my old photos into the digital age - so annoying to have all your childhood photos in albums and worry that if they get destroyed they're gone forever!

I scanned about 300 photos. It is a very fast scanner and the multi-image detect is awesome. It automatically separates out the photos so that you don't have to do it afterward in photoshop or whatever. I love that function. The highest res you can select is 600dpi for the image scans, but it turns out beautifully. I did also try negatives, but if you have the actual picture then I think for most cases the two scans looked about the same and the negatives took FOREVER to scan. (Although I've never ever scanned negatives before and from what I've read this scanner is actually fast - sad huh?) But the negative scans looked great too.

I would highly recommend this scanner. I did my homework before I bought it and am extremely happy that I did.

Customer Review: Very good scanner
Summary: 5 Stars

I needed a scanner to scan slides, my dad had a collection of over 3000 and I was hoping to find an inexpensive solution to view and then print out the image...Very happy with my decision to get this Canon scanner...comes with good software and very easy to use...Only problem I had was trying to get it registered online, called them up on the phone and in 5 minutes was taken care of...I also am able to scan negatives to a positive image, so cool...will use this item for a long time...
UPDATE....9-16-2009...Have used this scanner almost every day now...scanned a total of 4789 slides, took awhile but the results were well worth the price I paid for the scanner...then proceeded to copy almost 5000 photos to transfer to CD and the results were great, the included software was very helpful in touching up the pictures and making them look new...many great comments on the pics that I sent to family and friends...many pros and no cons...I am not a pro photographer but just like to work with photos and this fit the bill perfectly...also like the feature of negatives to pictures - very helpful when all I had were negatives....
