Customer Review: Pretty Darn Happy
Summary: 5 Stars

After a year of quasi-research (speaking with friends and acquaintences, talking to employees of all the local camera stores, the people at the Apple store, etc...) I realized that there is no winner, or clear leader, in the negative/slide scanning biz. I was a bit deflated at the lack of choices available, but also certain that I wanted to convert my family's slide and negative collection to digital - So, I went with a known brand, read a couple reviews on the 8800, and hoped for the best - I don't have anything to compare my purchase to, but I can state that I am quite pleased with this product - Very easy to use and the results are great. The conversion process takes a bit of time, but it's not bad at all. The unit works with my Mac like they are old buddies - Compared with scanning services at thirty cents a slide, or whatever they are charging, I have paid for my scanner in less than a month and still have thousands of pics left to do - As I stated at the get-go, I am a pretty darn happy customer.

Customer Review: Excellent Compromise
Summary: 5 Stars

OK, I looked at a half dozen slide digitizers (my primary task) that were right around a hundred bucks - forty percent or so cheaper than this one. I also (briefly) fantasized about a "real" slide digitizer - at eight or ten times the price of this one. And, of course, I looked at the commercial operations - not a logical approach when you've got (literally) thousands of slides that you would like to move onto disks. Well, based on a dozen or so reviews (some similar to my own) I purchased the Canon Canoscan 8800F; and, you know, I am pleased. [Aside: I purchased a work site table saw for my home shop that a couple of professionals had dismissed as unsuitable for their usage. "OK for 'weekend warriors,' but not good enough for 'real' work." Man! For THIS Weekend Warrior that saw is as sweet as it gets. I love it! This may be the same type of thing.] You NEED a twelve hundred dollar scanner? How nice that you had the bucks to indulge yourself. Me? I am one happy guy ... with a few bucks left over!

Customer Review: Time saved is worth extra cost
Summary: 5 Stars

Been scanning in slides for about a month so far and am very satisfied. I'm using an iMac from 2006 running OS X 10.6.4. The only glitch I've run into was forgetting to download the most recent driver software from the Canon site. Being able to scan in 4 slides at a time is a plus. I initially thought about purchasing the cheaper boxes that do one slide at a time, but I'm now glad I spent a little extra. I've been able to process 36 slides, scanned at 1200 dpi and titled, in about an hour. To date I've scanned in approx. 800 slides with at least 200 more to go. An added plus was getting Photoshop Elements. I don't own any Photoshop stuff so it's made the scanning a lot more brainless, which is a plus for me. I know previous reviews have commented on the hardiness of the holders for the negatives or slides, but I've found that the slide holder works very well for me and is durable enough. I also don't seem to have a problem with it staying in place while changing out slides.

Customer Review: GREAT scanner for negatives!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this scanner after reading the great reviews about it on Amazon. What kept popping up in the reviews was easy, easy, easy and boy is it ever! After installing the software for the scanner I was scanning negatives in about 10 minutes! I basically use the simple settings while scanning and was stunned by the quality of the pictures on the first set I scanned! It takes a little under 10 minutes to scan two strips of negatives (8 pictures). I have a lot of negatives from the 70's on that I need to scan in and this scanner will save me money by being able to scan them myself. I sent some negatives out to get pictures made at a drugstore and they were NOT cheap. This baby will save me money by scanning and not having to get pictures developed. I will also be using it to scan in old family pictures. I've tried one picture scan already and it came out excellent also. I put one of my negative scans in with the customer images and will add more....love it!

Customer Review: Working like it said it would but problems with using computer while scanning
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this item after reading other reviews and considering other models. Am not a techy but it was easy to set up and to use. Purchased because I wanted to save our negatives and be able to look at the pictures without going through the many prints that we have. Have tried both negatives and positives and pleased with both (some of the negatives are 20 years old). It is slow, but I just start the copying process and then get on with other things and with the results, I'm not complaining.

Since writing the above, I've encountered a problem while trying to work on the computer at the same time as scanning - it's OK as long as you dont get into that critical time of the final scan and then the next dialogue box. Then if you happen to be doing something else, the scanner dialogue box freezes and, if I'm lucky, I only have to restart the program and re-scan. But I've also had to restart the computer. Is there a fix for this?
