Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Image Scanner (2168B002)

Customer Review: Superb scanner. Better than expected!
Summary: 5 Stars

I used to work in a digital imaging studio, where I had access to several high-end scanners. I got quite spoiled as a result and have been disappointed in every home-use scanner I've tried -- until the CanoScan 8800. It's very easy to set up, and the software is pretty intuitive. But more importantly, it produces excellent results, whether you're using it as a flatbed or as a film scanner for negatives and slides. The color balance is excellent and the built-in image-analysis algorithms help preserve shadow and highlight detail. I've been delighted to discover that some of my scans look even better than my carefully hand-made prints.

Although it's true that the CanoScan can be a little slow when scanning at high resolutions, it's still faster than some of the commercial scanners that were state-of-the-art just a few years ago. Plus, it's not a big deal if you just set up a batch of 8 to 10 negatives and do something else for a half hour. (The software doesn't seem to take up much RAM, so it's possible to multitask.) Note to Mac users: I'm running Snow Leopard and have had no problems in getting the software and scanner to work on my system.

If you're looking for an inexpensive home scanner that delivers consistently excellent results, look no further!

I read about 30 reviews out of the 300 and decided to buy this scanner.
I have owned multiple cheap scanners over the years but wanted something a little more high end to digitize my old photos and negatives of all my family etc.
I am so impressed with this scanner. I have some very old family negatives that where starting to fade, they almost looked sepia, greenish. My previous scanner could not deal with the faded negative, it just looked awful. I dropped it in this new scanner and did a preview, and wow, i could not believe it, the picture looked like it was taken yesterday.

Scanning for me used to feel like a chore, but i am actually having fun using this one. A very high 4800X9600 possible DPI. There are 3 negative holders, but even if you have a bigger negative that doesn't fit in the holder, you can just turn the thumbnail view off and resize to any negative size of your choice. You could even build your own negative holder if you wish out of some thin card. I have been using the ArcSoft software so far and am very impressed. I haven't even tried the Adobe Photoshop Elements yet.

Like i said, if your having difficulty about which scanner to buy, this is the one. Over 300 people cannot be wrong.

Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Film/Negative/Photo Scanner (2168B002)
I had been contemplating purchasing a Nikon slide scanner for my needs until I came across the Canon 8800F. At the price (1/3 that of the Nikon)coupled with the high praise mentioned in the earlier reviews I decided to go with Canon.
Ordered from Amazon on Sunday, recieved Wednesday and up and scanning the same day. The software setup was very easy. I ran a few trial scans to get the feel of the process then scanned a 159 slide, slide show in about 3 hours at the 1200dpi. The slides were a mixture of Kodachrome 64 and Fujichrome 50 and scanned results the best I have ever made. I have also made some scans at the 2400dpi level and even more impressed with the quality of the digital image. I now only have to evaluate the added scanning time vs higher/lower resolution for future scans. With the Canoscan 8800 there was no color correction needed and results are excellent. I have approximately 7500 slides to review and upload into my computer. They consist of Underwater, Nature and Family subjects and I look forward to finally being able to archive these images digitally.

Customer Review: It's Perfect!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the scanner to use if you want to transfer photo's, slides, or film negatives to digital.
I'm using an HP desktop computer running Vista Home Premium. From the time it took me to open the package till I was scanning slides, including installing the software, was about a half hour. The software was very easy to install and use.

I haven't scanned any film negatives so I can't report on that. But the slides I scanned so far, (close to 100, with another 800 to go) came out perfect! I used a soft make-up brush to first brush off any dust particles prior to scanning. The clip will hold 4 slides at a time. I timed the process and I was averaging about a minute per slide. That includes removing and reloading 4 new slides.

This scanner picks up every detail on the slides, including any imperfections or dust. The way I dealt with that is I use the Google Picasa program, a "FREE" photo program from Google. It's easy to learn and you will be amazed at the outcome. The digitized photo's of the slides look better than the original!

Look no further if you are in the market to purchase a scanner to transfer your pictures, etc. to digital. This Canon 8800F scanner is the product to buy!

Customer Review: Canoscan 8800F is great for archiving
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to digitally archive my family's film and slide negatives, and for Christmas, I received the ITNS-500. After working with it for two days and reading the reviews, I couldn't return it fast enough! I purchased the CS8800F instead, and am completely satisfied with it. I've scanned 300+ slides and have recently moved on to 35mm film. I haven't used it for general scanning yet, so I don't have an opinion on that, but the film scanning is great. The pre-packaged software (MP Navigator) is relatively easy to use. I had some negatives that the software cut off at the wrong places, and was able to rectify that problem with the scanner's driver software (ScanGear). ScanGear also has other advanced tools to adjust curves, brightness, and contrast, which is handy for batch-scanning. I've scanned both color and B&W films, and both have turned out well. I scan at 4800 dpi, so it takes quite a while (usually about 25 minutes for 8 frames) but the quality is excellent. You can also have ScanGear play a tone when scanning is finished, so that you can do something else while scanning. I would recommend this scanner to anyone who wants to archive film without spending a fortune on a professional, dedicated film scanner.
