Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 Color Image Scanner (0307B001)

Customer Review: Good Scanner, Great Price, Good Software
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these to scan in a bunch of old documents such as tax returns from the late 1970's.

It has a lot more features than you would expect from the box and marketing information. With the Scanner Toolbox software you can easily re-program the three function buttons simply by selecting the new function from a drop-down menu. I set up one button for PDF.

As of October 2009 Canon has new DRIVER software on its website for Windows 7 compatibility. The Canon website does not have the ArcSoft PhotoStudio software that comes on the CD.

Version 6.0.1.132 of ArcSoft's PhotoStudio FOR CANON SCANNERS is available here: [...] NOTE: If you go to the ArcSoft website, all the "patch" links take you to their basic "buy version 6" links. The Canon OEM version does not qualify for the Upgrade price, so you would have to pay $80. Although the title and the various ArcSoft Forum pages indicate you have to have 5.5.0.91 or 5.5.0.93 installed to use the Canon upgrade, I had 5.5.0.75 and it worked. The upgrade does NOT uninstall the earlier version. Frankly, I tend to get confused by all the "bells and whistles" of Paint Shop Pro (I have versions 9, X and X2) and Adobe Photoshop Elements (ver. 7). I think I prefer ArcSoft 5.5 over 6, so I left both installed. When you first install 6.0.1.132 it will tell you there is a new version, which is 6.0.1.134. The ArcSoft software does install ArcSoft Connect Service, which checks for program updates, etc. You can turn that off with MSCONFIG -> Services -> uncheck ArcSoft Connect Daemon.

Regarding the scanner, you may have trouble getting the colors on pale colored documents (such as tax returns) to scan properly. They may look washed out or even disappear, leaving a white background. This is because the Scan Driver has an Auto Tone feature that defaults to ON. The Unsharpen Mask and Auto Tone feature cause MAJOR changes. You can mess with them in Preview mode. Run a Preview scan and then just select the various features and it instantly updates the image. One thing I particularly like is the Text Enhanced scan mode, for (black & white) documents with some faded text (typewriters, multi-generation photocopies, etc.) It basically leaves the background normal but darkens any text. A lot of options may be unfamiliar, e.g., Descreen. The Help explains it clearly.

Scan rate for colored images (tax returns) does seem a little slow. If you will be doing a LOT of scanning on a regular basis you may want a faster scanner, but may lose portability. Depending on the type of scan (color, etc.), the unit can emit a high-pitched whine. Someone said the unit could be used in a library but for such documents that would not be true unless you can go off to the side somewhere. It's not REALLY loud but could not be used, e.g., while listening to a lecture or in a library. This is not a malfunction, it is because the motor actually starts and stops constantly to move minute amounts. But, hey, if you REALLY needed it you probably could run the scanner IN a briefcase to kill the noise.

The Scanner Toolbox software lets you choose your output software. So, for instance, it scanned tax documents, generated a PDF and I set it to transfer PDF's to Adobe Acrobat instead of Adobe Reader. You can choose your OCR, image editing, and PDF software.

This is the size and weight of an average laptop. You could fit it in many laptop bags along with the laptop. It is mainly plastic, plus the glass scan area, so it is about as fragile/sturdy as a laptop. It is USB powered, so it doesn't have a power supply and you can't scan directly to a flash drive or memory card.
