i just took this converter to kenya and used it with a canon 70-200 2.8 is ii with which it worked quite well with minimal reduction in the len's smooth fast autofocus and excellent image quality. with the 135 2.0 iq seem to be slightly more affected but af was still fast
i was using a monopod or resting it on the edge of a safari van. handheld is not an option despite the is. perhaps fast shutter speed in good light mitigates this but i would count on needing to mount or support the lens. also noteworthy, the reduction in af speed made tracking birds much more challenging than without the converter
i have previously used the combination of i versions of both lens and converter and the resulting iq was not acceptable
a 400 2.8 lens was not available for comparison but inevitably the lesser weight and cost must have some consequence
the 400 is not a handheld lens either
the bottom line: the converter is a worthwhile compromise and i was glad to have it for birds
