Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Customer Review: Makes an average photographer better!
Summary: 5 Stars

It was hard to swallow the price tag but trusting in the Canon lens paid off. The hardest part about learning how to use this lens was figuring out how to trust it; letting the glass do its job.

Ease of use
Plug it in and take pictures, it's really that easy.

Focus
I've already used this lens taking photos on the sideline of a college football game so quick focus is critical. Trying to watch all 22 players on the field can be difficult and trusting the lens to find the one you are trying to photograph makes all the difference between terrible photos and poster-worthy shots.

Quality
There's a balance to walk, spending money on quality camera's or quality lens. Since new camera's are created all the time it's probably a better investment to put money into quality lens'. This is worth it.

Flexibility
Those huge lens' you see during games can't capture close up shots. This telephoto lens is just the right size for everyone trying to capture distant shots and players running right for you.

Great lens if you can afford it!

Customer Review: Awesome Lens
Summary: 5 Stars

the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS was my second L series lens purchased, and they still do not disappoint. build and image quality is amazing, and even though its on the heavy side, the images are well worth the extra weight over an inferior telephoto lens.

this lens can cover you in most situations, from outdoor nature photography to indoor studio. for outdoor, i also recommend purchasing the 1.4X extender-which increasing the zoom range to 280mm at a constant f/4, still respectable for medium to low light photography with a high iso.

while it may be pricey, its more than worth it. if cost is an issue, the 70-200 f/4 L IS or non IS lenses are both very good, but the IS is really worth the extra money, especially on a lens of this length.

edited several years later:
the price on the 70-200 f/2.8 IS has jumped from $1600 to $2000, despite the release of a version II. While it's still a great lens optically, and still an option if you cant scratch together another few hundred dollars, I hate the idea of paying this much for an old tech lens.

Customer Review: Perfect for most situations!
Summary: 5 Stars

Rented this lens for a trip to New Mexico (didn't hav3 $2000 under the mattress). I was going to shoot a friends wedding and a few days of camping in the high scrub desert of Bandelier National Monument, NM. I knew I needed something versatile for the wedding. As it seems with most wedding, I had very little idea of the lighting situations I would be dealing with. From sunrise shots the day of to the full ceremony and reception, this lens worked flawlessly. The huge aperture, great focal range, and lighting quick USM focus handled every situation. Following the wedding, the lens took a camping trip and continued it's great performance. The build quality is amazing and the optics are superb. The only "cons", that are just innate aspects of the lens really, are that it is quit heavy and with the low end of 70mm on a 1.6 cropped sensor, you are shooting more like 116mm. So, judge your distance carefully. On this trip, all I needed to carry was this lens and the 35mm f2 (plus medium and 35mm format film). The combination was great for all the challenges encountered.

Customer Review: Amazing Lens but to IS or not to IS? That is the question!
Summary: 5 Stars

I gathered all my non L lenses together and sold them off to purchase this lens. I must say, I am glad I did. After buying this lens I have not had the need to buy any other lens. It serves as my all purpose lens for portrait shoots, for landscapes, for sports...for anything.

The images are VERY sharp...no...EXTREMELY sharp. You will be blown away by the quality this lens can produce.

Downside:
The lens is pretty heavy. You will notice that the tripod mount is on the lens itself. After shooting with it for a while, I can honestly say that I have gotten used to the weight. It's not so bad as others say.

IS vs NON-IS:
Ok, so having IS does let you take shows about 1 stop down from normal....but to me it's just not that worth it anymore. As cameras gain better quality in noise handling, one can just crank up the ISO to compensate with little loss. If I were to buy this lens again, I would most likely get the NON-IS version.

Feel free to view my work using this lens.

Customer Review: One great lens!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this lens at the beginning of January 2008 and it has been about a month now. It is a terrific lens for my 20D and I am not regretted spending so much money on buying it. The lens was solid built and the focus is very fast considering it as a telephoto lens. Many people concern about the softness image quality that was caused by the shallow depth of view (when using F/2.8) and I found it is not an issue at all because if you have used/had the 50mm F/1.8 you know that the 1.8 would really make the image very soft and shallow focus. The 2.8 is really not that bad.
Like many people have commented before this lens is just one great lens for low light photography. The F/2.8 and the IS just make taking low light pictures so much easier than before. I usually take pictures under medium to low light and without flash situation, and with this lens I can take handhold pictures with the shutter speed down to 1/60 and the pictures are still very clear and don't see any blur which I don't think I could do if it were the F/4 IS version of this lens.
