Customer Review: Great Accessory for one of Canon's best lenses

I love the Canon 50 mm f/1.4 Lens. It performs wonderfully and lives on my camera much of the time.
Reasons to buy any hood:
1. Protects the glass from your oily fingers when you reach for the camera. (I prefer not to use a UV filter - ghosting/degradation/etc)
2. Sacrifices itself rather than the front element if you drop the lens
3. Prevents lens flare (disclaimer: hasn't been an issue for me)
Reasons to buy THIS hood:
1. Black Matte interior on the inside of the hood that Canon applies is not found on 3rd party hoods
2. Fits lens appropriately, can be installed forward or backward
3. Holds value when combined with this exceptionally popular lens

I got this as much for safety as anything. If I should drop my lens, a solid lens hood will help. Plastic construction will absorb some of the impact without transmitting all of it, as a metal hood would. Hopefully it will eliminate occurances of flair, although with the Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, that's not a big issue to begin with. It also can keep dust and debris off the lens surface if you're shooting in a less-than-ideal environment.
It twists on and off the lens easily. When it's on, it's very snug and secure. Kind of pricy for a piece of plastic, but Canon's in business to make money.

The 50mm f/1.4's front element is already deeply recessed which is most likely why the lens is more flare resistant than other 50mm lenses. This O.E.M. hood is the only well-fitting accessory necessary to 'complete' this lens. Since I don't like to reverse the hood during storage, removing the 58mm lens cap is tricky with my large thumb and index finger.
Canon provides the hood for all of their L lenses. It only makes sense to buy a hood for all non-L lenses you own. It is as vital a protective accessory as a wide brim hat on a sunny day.

This Canon lens is well fitted to the 50 1.4. The interior has a matte surface and stops reflections. While it may seem expensive, I found the off-brand lens hoods often don't fit right, and one I bought let light in on the sides! Definitely not worth even half the price of the Canon. The hood protects your valuable lens from damage as well as blocking that light and ruining your pictures and they pretty well last the lifetime of the lens. In the long run, worth every penny and then some. Every lens I own now has Canon hood to match.Customer Review: Fits the lens well

I was considering a third party lens hood for about half the price for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4. After reading some of the reviews stating that the third party hoods sometimes are either too tight or too loose I purchased this Canon ES71II and have no complaints about it. It fits the lens very well - not too tight not too loose. Maybe a bit on the tighter side, but it's not a problem.
Overall, this hood does what it has to do, albeit for somewhat high price (as for a simple piece of plastic and felt)
