Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon I-9900 Photo Printer

Customer Review: WOW wow WOW wow WOW
Summary: 5 Stars

I would have commented on this printer the very day I received it, but I've been too busy admiring my prints!
With other reviewers saying it only took a few months to fall out of love, I'm glad I waited. I am happy to report that 8 months later I am still head over heels in love with this printer. The colors are amazing, the speed is insane, and the quality is truly as good as a lab. I've even managed to print on fine rag media and canvas with incredible results. Canon doesn't recommend the really thick stuff but I've found that as long as its flat and not curled it feeds fine and the prints are beautiful.
ON BANDING
I can't speak to why people are having banding issues, perhaps they are using compatible inks, I only use genuine canon inks and haven't once had a banding issue and I am on my 8th set of tanks, I print way too much!
ON INK COMSUMPTION
Print yield is average to great depending on the media you select and print quality. I find that standard quality actually yields a pretty good print and uses half the ink, so I suggest you experiment. This printer doesn't cost any more in ink than any other I have owned.
ON OTHER BRANDS
I have had Epson's and HP's until this printer and I can honestly say I will never again waste my time with the other companies. Anyone who owns a Epson knows you waste a good 60% of your ink cleaning the heads, and I've actually thrown out 3 epsons in the last 4 years, the company actually considers them disposable. Don't believe me, call a tech and ask them if you can get your Epson repaired, the answer will invariably be NO. HP's are sturdy and for everyday printing they really can't be beat but for quality and speed I will take this printer over the rest any day!
ON CABLES
Someone rated this printer 1 star because Canon didn't include cables, I've got news for you buddy, HP and Epson don't always include cables either. Not to mention that since this printer can be connected by USB, USB2 or firewire, they don't know what you need. Try buying an Epson and see that you don't get a cable or full ink tanks! Yes, you can see that I am a little burnt on having to toss out 3 Epsons over 4 years! ;)
CONCLUSION
If you're looking for a large format printer that produces high quality prints look no further! Remember to buy a cable, stick with genuine inks and you will NOT be disappointed!

Customer Review: This Printer Rocks!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

When the printer first arrived, I was shocked at the size of it. It is almost twice the size of my dead Cannon S450 so I had to make some room and then in the end I was thinking "overkill". Why in the world did I just purchase this thing (the girlfreind was giving me the same look). Why didn't I just go out to Best Buy, or Amazon and pick up something for under $200? I don't do much photo printing, but when I do, I do demand the best and the S450 did a great job for 4 years until it just went dead on me a couple of weeks ago.

After installing it, I checked out all the test pages, got it hooked up as a network printer, and I was off to my busy work stuff with just black and white word documents. Darn, this thing is FAST!!!! I ran just a quick test on a photo print out on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper, and it was still "FAST" and the results were impressive.

I purchased the Canon Photo Paper Pro 13 x 19 inch paper also and that arrived today. Although a little pricy, I wished I would have opted out buying something a little more cheaper knowing I was going to screw something up on the first printout. No way.

Getting gutsy, I searched though my collection of pictures and found a perfect test picture of my girlfreind with her children. I used the Cannon Software Easy Photo Print Plus software which comes with the printer, selected the picture, border type, etc. and hit print to print on the 13 x 19 photo paper. I turned my head and the printer just took off and it was almost half way done in less than a couple of minutes. I figured I would have been sitting here for a half hour or so just to get that far. No way. My son was watching this thing print and just said "Cool". Ok, passed his test. I knew what he was thinking, "WWF posters for the bedroom".

The original photo was taken with my Cannon PowerShot S2IS and saved as a JPEG image on my computer.

The picture quality is AWESOME!!!

I will be digging around my images for my relatives to print out this Christmas and will be printing 13 x 19 portraits for them for Christmas presents.

The $500 I spent for this printer just paid off.

GREAT JOB Canon, and a great job Amazon for having the printer available.

dave

p.s. If you buy this printer, you are really going to like it.

Customer Review: After 2 years of use, its STILL a 5 star printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my i9900 for almost two years now. I've printed everything from 4x6 glossy prints to 13x19 fine art prints on matte paper. The short review: This printer is amazing. Read on for a longer review.

Prior to my Canon i9900 all of my color printers had been Epson. I became frustrated with Epson's lack of Mac OS X driver support, so when I needed to get a new wide format photo printer I went looking elsewhere. Review after review praised the i9900. The review a the Imaging Resource web site by Mike Pasini is what cemented my decision.

The first thing that amazed me about the i9900 is its speed. I thought I accidently left the print driver in "Draft Mode" the picture came out so fast. No, that's really how fast it is even when set to the highest quality print. In contrast my Epson 1280 seemed like a snail it was so slow.

After using the i9900 for about 3 months I realized that I had never needed to clean the print heads. Cleaning the heads was a weekly adventure with my Epson. 2 years later I still have NOT cleaned the print heads! I have, however, run the alignment procedure two times.

Probably the most impressive feature of the i9900 is its color gamut. Because it has discrete Green and Red inks it has a wider gamut than many printers out there.

Compared to my Epson the i9900 is very frugal with ink. I printed 20 13x19 prints before I needed to change a cartridge. Each of the 8 cartridges can be changed individually. I usually keep one spare of each color on hand since I print very frequently.

I primarily use Hahnemuhle Fine Art papers (especially their Matte Photo Rag 188). The results are truly amazing. Most people would never realize that the prints are from an ink jet printer.

My only wish for this printer is longer lasting prints. But this really isn't a problem when you consider that a framed print made with Canon's BCI-6 inks will last over 20 years.

I would highly recommend this printer, especially as we get closer to the PIXMA Pro 9500's release (early 2007), the price of the i9900 should get even more attractive.

Customer Review: Canon vs Epson....
Summary: 5 Stars

And the winner is... CANON! By Far!! Read on....

I shoot for Federal Law Enforcement and the Air National Guard; I have managed a large format service bureau. I have printed on many, many different output devices to include Durst Lambda, Encad IJ, Roland HiFi Jet, Laser printers, Fuji Pictrography, Dye-sublimation devices, plus many more. I say all of this to validate my comments that follow...

The bottom line is the i9900 blows all of them away! This includes an Epson 9600, 7600 and 4000 all of which I use for the Feds and military. The only downfall is the lack of "Archival" inks. I lamented between the Epson 2200, and the i9900. I DO NOT regret one minute the i9900 decision! It is absolutely gorgeous! Now Canon needs to get on the archival ink bandwagon, and they will not be beat. I shoot a Canon 10D for my personal work, that coupled with the i9900 makes unreal images/prints, these prints blow the minds of all of my peers! They cannot believe the quality. It works with Epson, Konica/Minolta, and Red River papers perfectly. The Konica QP Glossy Paper is very nice, with no "bronzing", like the Epson pigmented inks.

I cannot tell that the printer is actually working until I see the paper moving, it is that quiet!

Downfalls would be the paper path not being a straight feed path, and the inks not being archival. The paper path has not presented a problem as of yet, but I will try some art paper and I am sure it will choke. I hope to be proved wrong on that thought. Although with the archival aspect I think that in 8-10 years when these prints are expected to fade, I will have been through several printers and the technology will be untouchable and I will just reprint them as needed. As far as selling the prints, well it will give me an opportunity to resell prints in the future...maybe. I will see down the road if they actually fade.

I hope that this has helped you make the right decision...the i9900!

Customer Review: Great printer.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this printer since it was first stocked at compusa. so far, its's been an amazing inkjet printer. I previously owned epsons (3000, 2200) which required lots of maintainance such as frequent head cleaning, tweaking with color profiles to get color matching, and having a designated computer as RIP print server. Canon is easy--direct connection to my computer via FireWire (or USB1/2). Straight out of the box, photo prints had relatively good color matching to what I see on my Apple Cinema display. Colors were a bit warmer and more saturated than what I would prefer. But they were still very good. It prints quietly and very fast (especially compared to Epson 2200 & 3000) . I wanted to get precise color matching to what I see on my screen. It took me about an hour to calibrate my monitor, set up color profiles, and adjusting only the color intensity on the Canon printer and printing with my custom color profile to get the colors nearly perfect.
I saw that some complained about the ink cost. Canon uses 8 inks and will run you about a hundred dollars to get all 8. BUT...it rarely uses Red and Green. Photo colors (PCyan, PMagenta) seems to run out pretty fast. If you have photoshop you can always adjust the color distribution in CMYK so that the printer uses more ink from black but and not from the four process colors. I looked at the prints under a loop and found that 2-picoliter droplets stay on the surface of the page. It seems like a lot of ink does not go on the page but they are tightly held together to produce excellent color and definition. Anyway, the cost of printing on this Canon is no more than Epson 2200.Text printing is so-so if you are printing direclty to the printer. It isn't as tight and defined like printing through RIP. BUT. you can emulate this effect and get near perfect text printing by saving your doc as a PDF and then printing the PDF file. The result is amazing! Anyway, it's an excellent printer. Get to know it well and it will treat you well.
