Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon I-9900 Photo PrinterCustomer Review: A great printer! Summary: 5 Stars
I was attracted to this printer from very beginning. I use to own an Epson Stylus 2500 which was good also, but that printer died and I need another one. I thought about buying another Epson or an HP but this printer had a higher resolution, separate ink catridges, is fast and really didn't cost that much more. The printer was orginally $499 but amazon was offering it for like $420 which was the same cost of the HP. The epson was alot cheaper but the resolution was lower, I hear people complaining about their printer's constantly jaming, and going through ink like crazy. Epson's ink cartidge are not separate for each color, so you have to replace the entire cartidge if you run out of ink even if you are only out of one color and not all. My biggest complain about epson is that they don't want to bother updating their printer drivers after the model gets old and they force you to either get around that or buy another one which I think is sneaky.
I haven't had this Canon printer long, but the bottom line is it fits my budget, great resolution, very fast, wide format prints, separate ink cartidges, great looking photolab quality prints just as if you went to a lab.
I was concerned at first, about find a printer that basically printed great photos (matched the color from my digital camera), but could also print resumes, labels and regular word documents. This printer can do all that and more.
SO far I am very satisfied with this printer and on top of that Amazon.com sent it to me with FREE SHIPPING and a day earlier than expected.
Customer Review: Don't use generic ink, Great service Summary: 5 Stars
I have used this printer for almost a year. Self published a southwest landscapes calendar at X-mas. I tried to cut costs after that, so I started using generic ink. Bad choice. Started suffering clogged nozzles almost immediatly. Since most of my prints other than the calendar, are for computer color adjustment purposes, and then typically end up in the trash, I figured the savings was worth the hassle. Wrong. After 2 days of destroyed prints I finally called Canon (4 days before warranty expiration) and they are sending me a refurbished unit. Even though I may have voided the warranty by using generic ink. They didn't ask me to send them mine first so they could determine if the problem was of my creation by using cheap ink, they're sending me a replacement first. I would have bought this printer again before that, but this has sold me even more on Canon products.
Even with the generic inks, the print quality was excellent. (when the nozzles didn't clog.) Under 2x magnification, print quality matches commercial prints.
While experimenting with using rice paper to print on, I discovered that this printer prints exactly the same. If you run the same page through 5 times, it will print exactly the same. There will be no smudges or fuzzy edges because the print will be exactly over the previous. I don't know of any practical value to that, I just appreciate that kind of precision.
Any body want some generic ink? I have a bunch.
Customer Review: This is the right printer for large blow-ups Summary: 5 Stars
I recently got this printer just after New Years. I had it ready to go out of the box in 45 mins approx. Everything went flawlessly, there were no surprises or error messages.
I printed out some landscapes (13x19) and portraits (8 1/2x11) borderless, and the speed is truly amazing. A 13x19 in 3.5 mins from the point you hit the print button.
The quality of the prints on Canon Photo Paper Pro is truly amazing. Infact, the prints looked better than enlargements I had of the same prints done in a lab! Canon's algorithms for vivid photo and noise removal are pretty good, they don't interfere with the quality of the original image much, other than doing what they are supposed to.
The high-point was when my wife shut up after complaining of the high cost, when she exclaimed that the pictures looked better than a calender. And that I should do a calendar, which I am not.
I still like the portaits I get on the Epson 785EPX using Epson Colorlife Paper, the same portrait on Canon was a little too saturated for my choice. So I will probably do portraits on the Epson.
Regarding ink usage, I was amazed to see that the ink level had hardly moved after three 13x19 and one 8 1/2 x 11 prints.
I think this printer is really worth it, especially for landscapes, or on prints where the size of the print really matters. I am glad I picked this one for size over the Canon Pixma 8500 that uses the same printhead.
Customer Review: Canon hits the mark again !!! Summary: 5 Stars
After years of using Epson and HP printers, I bought a Canon i900D about a year ago. I was simply amazed at the results and swore there couldn't be a printer that topped the quality and color of the prints. Well, I was wrong. The i900D is a great printer, but the i9900 is actually a step above with richer colors and faster printing.
The setup is very easy. When you get everything out of the box, simply snap the printhead into the holder and load the 8 ink cartridges. After the software and drivers are loaded, you'll need to do a print head alignment. Basically, that's it! I printed my first photo in less than 15 minutes from first setting it up. The pictures come out truly amazing! The addition of the green and red ink tanks really do help making the colors look richer.
One thing I have always liked about Canon printers is the ease of use both in setup, the ink systems, and the printed colors likeness to what is on the screen. The Epson and HP printer drivers needed a lot of work to get the colors just right. With the Canon i9900, there's no tweaking of the printer drivers necessary. The colors come out almost identical to what you're looking at on the screen. Very easy "user friendly" printer driver for this machine.
I can't emphasize this enough ... there's simply NO WAY a photo lab can produce better pictures than what this printer prints. You will absolutely not be dissapointed with this printer!
Customer Review: Great prints Summary: 5 Stars
There are other technical reviews out there so I won't get into that. I just want to let you know my general thoughts on day to day real life usage.
I've only had this printer a few months, but so far I am very pleased. I use it for 11x17 CAD drawings in lieu of my large-format plotter for check sets. I mostly do black and white plots with occasional photos.
I am on my third black cartridge. I haven't kept track, but have probably done a ream of text print-outs and maybe a third or half a ream of 11x17 architectural type plots. Also approximately 20 8x10 color photo prints and several large format color photo prints. All of my other ink cartridges are original.
The plots are great and save me time and money over my large plotter. And the photos are fantastic. I've printed some 11x14 and 8x10s with exceptional results. I've used both AGFA and Canon paper with great results with each.
Paper is extremely easy to change. I go back and forth between 8.5x11 and 11x17 frequently all day long.
I gave my i550 to my daughter (also an exceptional printer) as this printer takes up too much room to have two printers, but I don't forsee that as a problem. Just allow lots of countertop space. You'll need 24" width minimum and 30" depth minimum.
I've not had the noise problem some have mentioned or any printing problems. Overall it seems to be a reliable printer.
