Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon I-9900 Photo PrinterCustomer Review: i9900 after 5 years Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the i9900 from Amazon in November, 2004 - five years ago. For the last 4 and a half years, I have been using Media Street inks in the printer with a continuous ink system (CIS). Because I use non Canon inks and papers, I create my own printer profiles with a Datacolor PrintFix colorimeter). I've been through three print heads while printing a thousand 4x6's on Canon Photo Paper Plus glossy, hundreds of 8.5x11's and a couple of hundred 13x19's on Ilford Classic Pearl paper. The printer is still going strong and it is a superb dye based printer. Key parts like the print heads are still available and used in later model printers, so it is relatively easy to maintain.
In April, 2009, I purchased an Epson 3800 pigment-based printer to be able to print 17x24" images and to create images with longer longevity that can be displayed without glass. Dye based prints produced by the i9900 are more likely to fade in direct light and must be displayed under glass to achieve the longest life. Interestingly, the color gamut of the i9900 is very similar to that of my 3800. If anything, the color from the i9900 "pops" somewhat better than that from the 3800. Because of the very low cost of the continuous ink system, I'm using the i9900 a lot more than the Epson 3800, especially when working image corrections before a final print.
Customer Review: Exceeds Canon's brag Summary: 5 Stars
I've come across very few products that perform up to what its manufacturer claims for them. This printer far exceeds in the quality of its output what even a blessed publicist could write about it. "Uncanny!" is the word. What the unit gives me would challenge even the best a processing lab could do. I had one problem, which turned out to be of my own making and a result of my not sufficiently trusting the i9900. To get a letter-sized print took me 30 minutes. I kicked my computer, punched it, cursed at it, and was even thinking of unplugging it as punishment. I had duitfully scanned my film negatives (and slides), sized and massaged them through Photoshop; then saved them as JPEG, and turned the file over to i9900 to print. Canon's estimate of 50 seconds for letter-sized--hey, it took me 30 minutes. Yet, you know--the output was worth the wait. Last night I woke up with the answer. The i9900 wants to do all the work--enlarging and massaging. To ask it to go to Photoshop is downright insulting, except to get the JPEG save. So I gave the Canon a JPEG and said, "Okay, it's yours!" In 50 seconds I got a photo even my wife gasped at. So, please, don't buy the unit! I want my genius to be proclaimed.
Customer Review: I've never used an inkjet this dependable and reasonable. Summary: 5 Stars
As a media creator and network administrator, I've had a lot of inkjets on my desk over the years. Fifty? Eighty? None have pleased me in the slightest... except for this one.
In the 5-plus years I've been using the i9900, reliability has been excellent. Once every 6-months or so, when it might have trouble grabbing an envelope or the like, I've had to gently wipe the rear feed rubber rollers with a lightly dampened cloth to rid it of paper-dust.
The firewire connection was a bit iffy at times so I swapped out the connection to USB.
The ink isn't too outrageous in price and the cartridges are "unchipped", unlike most newer ink tanks these days that contain a computer chip to protect profits (and reliability?) against third-party inks.
I've found that although there are a dozen or so drops of ink left in the old cartridge the printer senses the empty reservoir section and asks for replacement. Using a pair of pliers I've been able to squeeze the old translucent cartridge into the new and provide many additional prints via the replacement ink tank.
As other printers If this one day becomes unusable, I can't imagine a new machine that can match it for simple performance and reliability.

Purchase price USD 640
* Note: The model I own is a Canon i9950, - which is essentially a i9900 with DVD-R/CD-R printing support.
The price is a bit more than what I'd to pay for an A3 printer, but the speed and quality this printer can deliver is outstanding. Anyone who's spotted the difference between a 4-color photo printer and a 6-color photo printer will appreciate the new 8-color system. Certain darker shades and shadows have improved with the added red and green, but one can easily tell that the printout is no match to a positive film. However, the printer really shines when the printout contains a multitude of colors. I suppose Canon will reintroduce the photo black / grey ink back into their high end printers once they've figured out a way to squeeze the extra ink tank into their 8-color ink system.
As the printer is able to eject a multitutde of colors without doing too much mixing, paper tends to curl less and ink economy is further improved.
My 4-color i6100 (which only cost me USD223) have lasted a good 2.5 years with over 5,000 printouts. With the hefty price tag, I'm hoping this unit will last a little longer.
Customer Review: I *love* mine! Summary: 5 Stars
The Canon i9900 is absolutely wonderful. For home or business this printer produces high quality photos. I have printe virtually every size photo, all the way up to 13x19 and have yet to be disappointed! The 3 extra ink colors add that extra bit of quality to the photos. I've printed many photos on my i9900, framed them, and proudly display them throughout my house. For my children's sports I've taken tons of photos with my DSLR, printed them out on 4x6 Canon paper and distributed them to the kids in the photos (teammates). Everytime I do this, the parents are always amazed when I tell them that I printed them out at home.
If you get this printer, I highly recommend sticking with only Canon inks and Canon photo paper. yea, the other stuff is cheaper, but you won't get the quality that you do with the geniune Canon supplies. Of course I've not tried every generic photo paper out there, but I have tried several and compared them all to the Canon, and you can really tell the difference.
for the price and quality you get with this printer, you won't be disappointed. If you want/need to print photos larger than 8.5x11, then this is the printer for you!
