Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PGI-5 BK 2-Pack Pigment Black Ink Tanks 0628B009

Customer Review: Expensive But Reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these Canon PGI-5 BK 2-Pack Pigment Black Ink Tanks for my Canon IP4200 Pixma Printer.

Pros
----
- Reliability
These ink cartridge are very reliable. I've yet to encounter a fail ink cartridge that the printer has to reject

- Ink Usage
At the lowest quality mode, I can print about a ream's worth of paper - double-sided.

Cons
----
- Expensive Ink
These printer cartridges are expensive. My printer uses Cyan CLI-8C, Magenta CLI-8M, Yellow CLI-8Y (also sold as a multipack), and the two black cartridges PGI-5, and CLI-8 Black (also sold as a multipack).

Since my printer uses all of the color ink cartridges at about the same rate even in grayscale mode, the price of ink cartridge replacements can be a lttle steep.

---
I've never had a problem with the Canon PGI-5 BK Ink Tanks. The main gripe I have is the high price ink cartridge replacements.

Customer Review: Not Cheap, but Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

The price per print of ink jet printers is simply expensive, especially when you consider the fact that the process is probably not even close to being archival quality. Yet for most they will suffice. It is commonly believed that if you want archival you should either use silver emmulsion (what you will get if you have your prints traditionally developed by a photo lab - even a one hour lab) or dye sublimation. All that being said, this ink and the printers they go into do a very good job. I've been very impressed. I don't think there is a huge difference over the last generation, but if you want the newer printers you have to make the switch to the newer ink. Good news is that it works with the current crop of paper.
What is great about this ink cartdridge is that in the canon printers it is the cartridge mostly used for black print, while the other black cartridge is used for photo prints. This keeps your cost of printing regular text a little cheaper.
Buying on Amazon isn't much cheaper than other options, but if you are signed up for Amazon Prime, it is increadibly easy to buy them and have them delievered very quickly (two days).

Customer Review: Great ink but expensive
Summary: 5 Stars

This ink tank will give you a very high quality output and Amazon offers a good price. The only downside is the cost if you do a lot of printing so I offer you this advice to those of you that want to save a perhaps 85% or more on your ink costs. Buy a chip resetter from that giant Auction site for around $25 along with some bulk ink and refill the tanks yourself. Use a drill bite to make a tiny hole and then fill the ink tank with a syringe that many bulk ink suppliers will give you. Make sure you temporarily tape the bottom ink output area before filling. Then just tape the top hole with plastic electrical tape and your good to go. You not only save money but you don't have to run down to the store or wait for Amazon to mail you some replacements. It works great for me since I print 100's of pages a month but if you don't have the time or patience to spend a few minutes refilling your ink then Amazon is your next best alternative for no hassle shopping. I have never had a problem with refill inks but your mileage may vary.

Customer Review: NOTE: Product photo and label DO NOT match...
Summary: 5 Stars

...because I ordered this exact same product 6 months ago, I know that it is the correct pigment ink tank for my Canon PIXMA MP610 printer; that is, a PG-5 Bk NOT a PGI-5 Bk. If you enlarge the product photo, you will see the correct product label. I don't know if there is any real difference between the PG- and the PGI- versions, but if there is you will be most unhappy with the wrong product. I have alerted Amazon.com to this discrepancy and, hopefully, they will correct either the photo or the label.

Editorial errors aside, I love my PIXMA printer and would not dream of using any other so-called "compatible" ink; only Canon for my baby. I've sent too many printers to an early grave by using compatible ink products.

Customer Review: High Quality Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I like using my Canon Pixma for low volume printing because only the ink you use needs to be replaced. The cartridges are relatively expensive, but Amazon has a great price if you purchase in volume. I never had any problems with Canon ink cartridges as opposed to one of their major competitors where the ink jets would clog up on a regular basis. I often had to throw away a cartridge because one of the colors ran out and the remaining colors in the cartridge would result in missing print information or simply a lousy print overall.

For home use and low volume printing, they are a good buy. I never tried to refill one, so I can only comment on the new replacement tank.
