Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PIXMA MX700 Office All-On-One Inkjet PrinterCustomer Review: Fantastic home office machine Summary: 5 Stars
This is one heck of a machine. I've been using it for over a month now with only minuscule complaints that don't detract from a 5 star rating. I am a computer technician, and have dealt with/repaired/attempted to repair a wide variety of printers, scanners, and faxes, and this one takes the cake in its class.
Pros:
-Build quality is excellent. Every inch of this machine feel sturdy, robust, and made to last. I've always hated the flimsiness of previous all-in-one machines I've had or used before (HP, Lexmark, Brother, and Epson). I don't feel like I'm going to accidentally break anything on this machine.
-It's FAST. I compared specs on a few different models from Canon, and this has great speed. I print off a lot of manuscripts (I'm also a theater director/administrator) and when I put it in fast mode, it's almost like it can't get rid of the paper fast enough.
-It's relatively quiet compared to other machines I've used, which is nice since I live in a studio apartment in NYC with my girlfriend and don't want the sound of the printer to drown out the TV or music playing. The scanner is also fairly quiet. I've had some pretty obnoxious scanners before, so this is a nice change of pace.
-Print quality is great. 99% of what I use this printer for is text or text with the occasional graphic for business. Canon has other models more focused on photo quality printing, but I run my photography business through a website that does professional prints for me, so I didn't need to lay more cash down for printing my own. That being said, the pictures I have printed out are very nice.
-Network capability is a major bonus. Even though I live in a studio apartment, I hate having cords lying around or having to move my laptop over to print something (it's a fairly heavy Dell powerhorse). I was able to connect the machine to my wireless router and now both my girlfriend and I can print effortlessly from anywhere in the apartment. (There is a flipside to this feature in the cons section, however)
-Auto document feeder for the scanner is really handy. Saves a lot of time when copying things.
-Two paper feeders. One one the back and one underneath the carriage. It's just a nice option to have and makes the manual duplexing easy. Also great if you switch between two different types of paper frequently.
-Adjustable flip-up color LCD display is also a nice touch. A little small, which isn't an issue for me, but those who have trouble with small text might have a hard time reading the screen.
-Great value. I got this at a great price from Amazon (after Christmas sale, perhaps). It's about the same amount I spent on my old Epson all-in-one a few years ago, and the Canon has by far more bang for the buck.
-Professional design. Last on the list because I don't care a whole lot about aesthetics of these things, but if it's an issue for you then rest assured that this is a nice looking machine. It's not glossy (which means no fingerprints/smudges by the way), and it's got a very professionally classy look with the black front/dark gray top and sides. It doesn't look like a cheapo college dorm room printer. It means business.
Cons:
-Deep footprint. The whole machine is bulky to a degree, but I don't associate these types of machines with slim, so I was ready for a little bulk. But because of the two different document feeders, the total footprint is pretty deep. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but make sure you have a deep enough table/desk to accommodate it.
-Networking was a little tricky to set up. I suppose it was probably more difficult for me because I have a lot of customized security and network preferences, but I had to run the setup on this machine twice before I could get it to work properly. And although it makes a little bit of sense, I wasn't a fan of having to plug it in via USB in order to set it up for networking. It would have been preferable just to plug the printer into the network, install the drivers, and just select the printer from the network list. I purchased a high-end Brother MFC wireless network capable machine for an office I did work for a few months ago and the network setup was incredibly easy. But that machine cost 8x as much, so I suppose easy installs are fairly mandatory at that price range. I'm willing to bet this process with the Canon is easier with a more typical home network setup, however. Again, I got it to work and it works great, so no huge gripes at this point.
-Default setting includes obnoxious menu beeps. This is a minor thing that is easily taken care of with some tinkering in the settings, but the default settings for the machine include a very loud and irritating beep for when it turns on/off and button sounds. Perhaps useful for visually challenged users, but I can tell the machine is on when I see it light up, Canon.
All in all, I highly recommend this machine. Great multifunctions, easy to use, and great quality all around. I'll hopefully be using this machine for years to come, and I can't imagine what higher functions I would need to replace it for. The industry seems to have reached a ceiling on resolution as it pertains to everyday use. I only hope the nozzles aren't prone to clog if left unused for a little bit like Epson's machines (had two of their machines do that to me - which is why I've switched to Canon), or at least they are easily enough unclogged if they are.
