Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One office PrinterCustomer Review: Great Printer For The Money, Works Excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this printer to replace an older Canon MP830 that finally gave up the ghost.
The MP 830 was an excellent printer that I absolutely loved, minus the fact that it drank ink faster than I can down a 2 liter of soda. When it died, I went on the hunt for the ideal replacement. I believe I've found it.
EASE OF INSTALLATION:
I was pleasantly surprised at how simple this printer was to install.
1) Take it out of the box
2) Remove all the protective tape (and trust me, there's a LOT of that!)
3) Put it in place & hook up a USB cable to it
4) Install the printer onto my wireless network (from the PC on the other end of the USB cable)
5) Unplug the USB cable
6) Install the printer on all my other computers (3 PC's and a Mac)
7) Start printing!
I followed others advice in other reviews and called Canon first to see how to set it up on the Mac. They were incredibly helpful, pointed me exactly to the place to download the right drivers and I was off & running!
All 4 of my computers easily found the printer and installed the proper drivers and can print and scan to it. The PC's can also fax to it as the Mac only will fax wirelessly to a blue-tooth enabled device.
EASE OF USE:
Previously owning a Canon MP 830 already, using the new MX 860 was a breeze! Lucky for me, Canon doesn't screw with a good thing and mix everything up from printer to printer. It's been extremely easy to use from the moment we plugged it in.
I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old that regularly print to it from one of our wireless connected computers and it's been a breeze for them to pick up. They come running into the room where it is to watch the prints come out in color! My wife has already figured out how to scan and copy with it and I've used it for faxing on a regular basis as well as printing, scanning, and copying.
- Scanning:
Scanning documents with this thing is great! It's so easy! Put the document in that you'd like to scan, press the scan button, select which computer you want the scan to go to, select the type of output (PDF, Image, Email attachment, etc), and then push the color or black scan button.
The Scanner performs the scan and the result shows up in Canon's slick MP Navigator application on the computer the scan was sent to. From there you can rename it, modify it, or save it out to some other spot. I love it! Makes converting documents to PDF's awesome! I love it! It even will scan right to the Mac too! The only requirements are that the drivers be installed on the computer you want to scan to and that the computer is on and is on the network.
I did notice that it's lousy at scanning a stack of 4 x 6 photos. I tried scanning a stack and they either scanned crooked or would jam in the feeder. Of course, I guess that's why there isn't an "Image" option for scanning from the document feeder; just "Document". But, I was trying to do something it wasn't really built for. Guess we'll have to look into a scanner designed to scan large stacks of photos. Oh well, I was hoping...
- Printing:
Printing is great! Press the print button in any application, choose the printer to print to (we have a couple on our network), and choose OK and off it goes.
From the printing dialog screens you can also choose several options including the ultra cool duplex feature (prints on both sides of the paper). It also doesn't throw up a bunch of annoying screens like my old MP860 did, it just prints! I like that!
- Faxing:
Stupid simple! Insert document, enter fax #, hit either the color or black send button. It's worked flawlessly!
Either faxingn from the document feeder or from the glass, it's a breeze! Setting up the fax machine is also fairly easy too. I actually did it without reading the manual using the Menu & Settings buttons. I admit I'm familiar though with setting up Canon multi-functions for printing as I've owned an MP 390 and a MP 830. Lucky for me, Canon hasn't seen fit to overhaul the process of setting them up so the settings were all easy to find.
I haven't sent a fax yet from one of my computers through the fax machine yet, but I'd imagine it's just like the MP 860 was. Just print to the fax machine that it installed on the computer, enter the phone number and send.
- Copying:
The wife's favorite part! My wife does a lot of small activities and lessons for our kids and for other reasons and has always loved having a copier in the house. I'm happy to report that the MX 860 is well liked by her. It's been easy to use, easy to set up, and quick to get a copy out of it.
Another thing that I really like is the fact that it doesn't seem to take forever to get ready to print like my MP 830 and MP 390 did. Sure, it makes the usual noises as it gets everything up & going, but time to print from the time you press the copy button is pretty darn quick; especially as multi-functions go.
INK LONGEVITY:
While we haven't really printed enough pages to really get a feel of how thirsty this printer is, I have noticed that the ink cartridges seem to be better sealed; or the ink isn't made of the same disappearing stuff the MP 860's were. In the month or so that we've had the printer, it's ink levels are still 100% full.
If I so much as let the MP 860 sit idle for a month, the ink would dry up (evaporate) fairly quickly. The MX860 doesn't appear to have that problem that I can see.
PRINTER SIZE:
Other reviews on here mention how "big" this thing is. Moving from my old MP 830 to the MX 860, I discovered that it's actually shorter. It is pretty wide & pretty deep (20" wide x 18" deep), but so was my 830 so it didn't surprise me. It has been nice though having the printer not be quite as tall as before. Takes up less space on the desk that way and just has a smaller feel to it. I like it!
SPEED:
I'd say the print speed is on par or slightly better than my MP 830; which was no slouch itself. Once you hit print for the first time of the day, the printer does make it's usual "I'm getting read to print!" noises, but it doesn't seem to take too long to get up & running and once it starts printing, it prints color prints out pretty darn fast. Granted, it's no screamer like my HP 4200 LaserJet is, but for my color printing needs, it's perfect.
Scan speed is much quicker than my MP 830 was. The light seems to get ready to scan MUCH faster. I love that! Seemed I had to wait an eternity with the old one just for the lamp to get ready. This one seems to be up & ready to scan in under 30 seconds. It then scans very fast!
Fax Speed is great. Throw a bunch of documents into the document feeder, enter the number, press Fax and it sucks the pages up one right after the other. It also seems to fax "faster" than the MP 830 did. Not sure why, but faxes seem to get received faster.
Copy Speed. Pretty much as fast as the scan speed. Nice, fast, zippy, and the prints come out fairly fast too. Wait for it to make all it's "I'm getting ready" noises while the lamp warms up too, and then watch for the copy to come printing out. Perfect for my needs.
NOISE LEVEL:
This thing runs SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than my MP 830. Canon has done a wonderful job of turning down the noise levels when it prints. It's whisper quiet! Much, much quieter than the old one. Scanning sounds about the same, and so does faxing (you can also turn on the speaker for the line pickup and change it's volume too so you know a fax machine picks up on the other end instead of a person. This way I know the faxes are actually going through).
OVERALL:
Would I buy one again? Absolutely! Would I recommend it to a friend? You bet! Especially if they wanted a wireless printer. I've absolutely LOVED being able to print to it from all of our computers! In fact, I even unplugged the USB cable on the back of it that went to the computer we set it up with. That freed up another USB port for me and, once it's on the network, it doesn't need to be hard-wired to any of the computers anyway.
I also love the fact that my Mac recognizes it and can print to it. While the MP 830 would do this too, I'd have to tether the thing with a USB cord to print to it (or share the printer through my PC connected to it and then hope the Mac picked up on the printer sharing option; which also meant that the PC it was connected to had to ALWAYS be on if we wanted to print to it from another computer). I can't stress how much I love the wireless functionality! It was a breeze to set up and it just worked! None of the "well, one driver isn't going to talk to another driver" crap that I read about with the HP's. It just worked. Right out of the box. And that's half of the reason why I stay with the Canon's. I have a business to run and don't have time to be screwing with drivers just to get something to print or scan or fax. I just want to press the button and forget about it and that's what my MX 860 has done for me so far.
So, I wholeheartedly recommend this printer as a small multi-function device for those with wireless networks that want to allow every computer on their network to print to it. Is it ideal for a small home office? Well, if you don't print a whole lot in color (ie. you're not printing 1,000's of color brochures on a weekly basis), absolutely! If you're a heavy volume color printer though, I'd look to a color laser jet. This would make a great family printer for the kids and also makes a great small home office printer.
If it's like most of Canon's past Multi-function printers, then I fully expect to get several years of great use out of it.
