Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One office PrinterCustomer Review: great printer Summary: 5 Stars
I work in a small research lab, and use the machine for printing out papers, scanning gels and photos and technical documentation.
I think it is wonderful - at least in comparison to an HP piece of junk I bought it to replace. The duplex feature is amazing - it never messes up the order, the pages never come out smeared (as was the case with my old printer). It has a bunch of pre-set modes for ink usage and such, and you can also program your own (which I have done). The menus are not cumbersome, so it is easy to change the settings on the fly. Print quality is great even on the lowest ink usage setting - and is simply wonderful when you use a "standard" or "high" quality setting. Paper is conveniently fed either from the cassette or from a rear tray. Scan quality is great.
Since I don't pay for cartridges, I can't really say whether it is economical. I have just printed 6 copies of a 200-page document (mostly text) on a "standard" setting and used 5 "big" black cartridges and 1 "small" black cartidge, and also had to replace magenta (but probably because it was already running low when I started printing). I like that the cartridges have a transparent window in them - so you can see that they are actually completely empty when you throw them out!
Another minor thing I like: when you install a new cartridge, it doesn't require that you print a test page - I hate waste!
Overall, highly recommend!
Customer Review: Solid Performer! Summary: 5 Stars
Great all in one printer. It has all the feature set you will need for a home home office. Set up is very. If you own a Mac and are running 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you will need to go to Canon's website and download the latest software. The out of the box software only supports 10.5 (Leopard). I contacted Canon's tech support via phone and they walked me right through. I was very impressed with their customer service.
The scanner, copier and printer perform flawlessly. I have not tried the fax option yet. Wireless printing is easy to set up and works great. Print quality is excellent. I have not attempted any photo printing yet but my guess is the quality will be top notch. I have owned numerous Canon inkjet printers and MX860 bests them all. Downside with all inkjet printers is depending on what you print (color, photos, etc.) ink can run out quickly and factory replacement cartridges are not cheap! Good thing is there are several websites that you can find quality replacements cartridges for less then half of what a Canon cartridge would cost. My recommendation if you purchase non-Canon replacement ink cartridges is to get the cartridges with the micro chip already installed. If you don't then you will have to remove these micro chips from the original Canon cartridges and install them on the replacement cartridge.
Cheers!
Customer Review: Just a Great Printer with Fantastic Functions and Features Summary: 5 Stars
Have had this for a couple of weeks now and have tried out most of the standard features for a home user. (Have not tried any advanced faxing or e-mail options yet)
Bought this printer for home office use. Wanted a good office printer that I could use as a home photo printer as well. Cost of ownership (ink costs) for long term light usage and photo printing was important to me. I also was looking for great photo quality, duplexing, faxing, and scanning as well. I am very happy to have chosen this unit. It is Great! good quality prints, great photos, and the ink seems to be used at a reasonable rate for a home inkjet printer.
Build quality feels very good.
Speed is OK.
scan quality is good
easy to use (though it takes a little time to get used to the Software and interfaces since I have only had HP printers before)
wireless setup was very easy
all paper feeds work smoothly (no paper jams)
duplexer works well (though it is not super quick)
print and scan SW is OK but not great. It is the one place I am somewhat disappointed with the product. It may have great functionality but is not terribly intuitive so it does not lead you to a quick appreciation or understanding of its capabilities and use.
have read reviews that this was noisy but it has been very quiet for me.
Customer Review: Quality piece of equipment Summary: 5 Stars
Full disclosure - I have this device USB attached to a Windows XP machine, and cannot comment about use in other environments.
I was very impressed with this device from the moment I used the built-in handles in the interior plastic shipping bag to lift the unit out of the box. It is sturdy, full featured, well documented, and best of all it just works. There is a ton of shipping/packing tape on the unit to hold various components in place during shipping, which took a while to remove but was appreciated. USB cable is included although it's not very long (retailer led me to believe it wasn't included and tried to sell me one.) The manual, written in English (as opposed to Chinglish or some other variant) is clear and well organized, with sections on setting up on a Mac vs Windows (and where appropriate, Vista vs. XP), and connected with USB vs. wired LAN vs. wireless LAN. NOTE: Unit cannot be connected via both wired and wireless LAN simultaneously. There is a separate manual titled "Network Setup Troubleshooting" and I'd recommend that the person who complained they couldn't make it work on their network read this (and yes it's more detailed than simply "Check the cable" or "reboot"). I also appreciate the bright LCD display with little icons in the corner for the amount of ink remaining in each of the 5 cartridges.
Customer Review: Great All-In-One Summary: 5 Stars
I received my MX860 a couple weeks ago and at first I was alarmed by how heavy it was (the shipping weight was 32 lbs). It is a bit big and heavy, but everything fits together pretty well in the package, so there aren't a lot of different trays sticking out everywhere.
So far I have been quite impressed. Document scanning is fast and easy especially with the ADF. I like the copy function of 2-to-1 (I'm trying to figure out if I can scan in that way, but need to go through the manual). I have not printed any photos, mostly black and white text things, but the quality appears very good. I will be trying photos tomorrow.
No issues with ink yet and I've probably printed about 150-200 pages (again mostly B&W), but I have already purchased cheap replacement cartridges ($3 each). I have a few other Canon printers and the cheap replacements work just fine for normal document printing, but sometimes photos aren't as good.
My work place bought brand new HP all-in-one printers last year and they were very loud and slow and chewed through ink. I also bought a lower end Lexmark which was the biggest waste of money ever.
Setup was easy although I did not set up the wireless yet.
All in all, this is highly recommended - scanning and printing are quick and high quality.
