Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma MP530 Office All-In-One Inkjet Photo PrinterCustomer Review: Canon MP 530 Better Than I Expected Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the printer for a month and REALLY like it. The reviews I read on line were overwhelmingly favorable, better than the MP 800-series, but a couple were decidely negative -- manufacturing faults that caused them to be sent back and replaced; jams; double-side printing not being dark enough; too-expensive ink cartridges.
Perhaps Canon solved some of the problems by the time they manufactured mine, but I've experienced nothing but great performance at a reasonable price.
There are two paper trays and there's been not one jam in ~100 print jobs from EITHER tray. The back tray is straight-thru printing, so I can not imagine how a jam could occur from there: it's particularly good for envelopes. (This replaced a Brother 5440CN because of all its jams, due I think to the too-tight turn out of the 5440's bottom--and only--tray.)
The double-side printing is a mechanical marvel to behold in action--my wife and I stand there sometimes just watching it go thru its moves. Its print is, in fact, a little grayer, I think so it doesn't bleed thru to the print on the other side. I believe Canon made the right design trade-off on that. It's not so grayish as to be a problem at all for us, even for 8-point font.
The price of the cartridges, at least compared to the Brother 5440 cartridges I used before this, is just fine. It seems to be more conservative on ink, and cartridge price is lower than Brother's.
The only minor point is that it's noisier than I epxected when it reaches for a sheet of paper--a "clunk" rather than the "click" I've experienced with other printers. Canon responded (promptly)to an e-mail I sent asking them about that, telling me that there was nothing wrong with the machine; it is a bit noisy that way.
All-in-all, a great buy.
Customer Review: Surprising Alternative to my HP All-in-One Summary: 5 Stars
I've been seriously surprised by the performance of my new Canon Pixma all-in-one. Given that it's several hundred dollars cheaper than the HP it's replacing, I really didn't expect much.
I'm happy to have been wrong.
Not that it's perfect - it's not!
The quality of photo printing is just so-so, good enough for proofs, but not of the quality the HP routinely produced. And the Canon is significantly slower than the HP.
On the other hand,
The cost of ink is significantly less than that of the HP:
The printer is much quieter than the HP;
The printer is smaller, returning valuable desk space for use; and,
The duplexer appears to run glitchless and smooth, something my HP could never boast. Important? Oh, yes. When you print large runs every month, you can save trees by using a duplexer.
Suggestions to Canon:
Make it so that I can operate every function from my computer OR from the machine, depending on where I happen to be. I really don't want to run back and forth because my printer is not located next to my computer.
Increase the functionality of page set up by allowing me to set the duplexer as "always on" rather than having to set it for each print run.
All in all, I'm a happy camper. For the kinds of printing I do, this all-in-one is a great choice.
Four and a half stars!
P.S. Another plus for this all-in-one is that the inks come in separate tanks, so I don't have to throw away yellow and cyan just because I'm out of magenta. I simply buy another magenta without spending extra for inks I don't need. That to me is a great benefit!
Customer Review: No more HP for me Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace my five year old HP OfficeJet 7000 series all-in-one, which I had never liked, from day one. This instantly blew the pants off that HP beast that cost three times as much when I bought it. To Wit:
1. Print Quality- No contest. My Canon prints look better than prints from my HP color laser printer. Prints on photo paper are astounding in their detail and depth. No banding, which is more than HP could ever claim.
2. Design- I'm not embarrassed to have this sitting in my office, as it is extremely well designed and attractive. Nice features include folding mechanisms for all three paper entry and exit areas (bypass, ADF, and print tray). These help keep the dust out, and keep the machine looking good.
3. Fit and Finish- Everything is just right, and it doesn't make creaking and groaning noises when the cover is opened, unlike my HP.
4. Quietness of Operation- I can hardly tell it is on
5. Speed- I don't think the paper ever slows down, on standard quality mode...it just zips through.
6. Ease of use- The manual wasn't even needed, other than setup.
7. Packing- Second to none...it took me an hour just to get all the tape off. I don't think this could be damaged in shipment, unless it was crushed.
8. Higher end Features- duplex scanning and faxing, and the ability to have two different paper trays to choose from is unusual in this price point. Kudos!
I can't imagine anyone not being pleased with this scanner. Works perfectly with my Mac (excellent bundled software, by the way), and I haven't had a problem out of it yet.
Customer Review: Super all around Summary: 5 Stars
My 9 year old HP was dying, and my office said that they'd pay for an all-in-one for me. I reserached a lot and it was between this one, an HP (I had always owned HPs) or a Dell. And I selected this one because it has more nozzles for better picture printing for a great price of $158.
I am VERY happy with the unit. Packing was great; undamaged in transit. Instructions are clear enough, albeit not super. Menu system is also easy enough to use, but the 2-line LCD screen reminds me of my first fax machine 10 years ago. (The Dell had a full 5 line color screen.)
This Canon looks SLICK; very stylish. The front door automatically opens when it starts printing -- like a kid I will never get over how cool that is. It takes up paper as its printing, so it literally prints a page and then goes right to the next one (vice my HP would take up one page, finish printing a page and spit it out, then take up the next sheet, etc.). It's very quick and the fax and copy functions work with one button.
It's pretty quiet (there's an option for Nighttime printing which I guess makes it even quieter) but shakes the desk when it's moving! Paper cassette holds plenty of paper and the auto feed handler works great for the fax.
The unit is BIG, though. Maybe not bigger than others, but much bigger than my old printer. If you're a work-at-home guy like me, you should measure your area before bying any of these units.
I've already recommended this unit to two friends. I'm very pleased.
Customer Review: Love this machine Summary: 5 Stars
Like most on this site I did intensive research in preparing to buy a multifunction to replace my HP officejet d135, of which I have two, home and office for about 5 years. Office one still going great, home one very persnickety. The Canons looked the best to me, and I chose this because, without a digital camera in my life, I couldn't justify the bells and whistles of the 800 series. In the two weeks I've had it I've been very pleased. It's almost spooky, like suddenly having Jeeves show up with a breakfast tray and pressed suit: the thing came out of the box ready to go; I've not looked at the instruction manual because it's intuitive enough; it's quiet, I've scanned and fooled with photos, faxed just fine, printed quickly and without problems. Loading the software was momentary, it seemed, compared to dealing with HP. I have not needed to call Canon for anything. I was put off by two things: all the talk about expense of the ink, and the lack of a great fax director program which is a real virtue of the HP software. Ultimately, though, the ease of use, and consequent peace of mind, is worth so much. I've figured out how to keep some fax programs on Word (I'm sure there's a cleverer way, I just don't know those things) and print them out with my fax when necessary. I'm very relieved to have the HP off my desk. And by the way, the machine is SMALLER than my HP officejet. I think this is a great bet for anyone with small to mid-range office needs. I appreciate all the previous reviews which led me here.
