Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma MP610 Photo All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2180B002)

Customer Review: Excellent! Can now buy it from Amazon for a bargain price.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Pixma 610 for a little less than three weeks. I ordered this printer from Amazon at 10 p.m. on Nov. 10, 2008, chose free shipping and received the printer Nov. 12th (1.5 days). Amazing Amazon! But at the time of writing this review Amazon is offering this printer for $50 less than I paid for it. I made several phone calls to Amazon and Canon but could not get it price adjusted. Amazon's new price is an internal "instant rebate," but Amazon no longer offers "matching" even its own price. Oh well, you can't win all the time and I am pleased with the printer. Customer service for Amazon and Canon are both excellent.

I use an iMac computer and it is compatible in all its functions. I've printed 53 b&w documents, 7 4x6 high quality photos, 2 sheets full of high quality photos, 17 color documents, 12 sheets of text with some color, and I made 4 color copies, for a total of about 100 printouts. All of the ink cartridges still appear totally full.

Text and color are excellent; even the economy mode is excellent; indeed it is hard to tell the difference between economy and standard modes. Photos and color copies are excellent. Speed is plenty fast for me. (I am retired, do not use the printer for business, but have hobbies involving computer work.)

As other reviewers have stated, you need desk space for this printer: with front tray open you need 23 inches depth; the printer is 17.5 inches wide; 7.5 inches high, but you need 15 inches height in the rear for the paper in the rear paper feed. For me this printer fits very well on my desk space, but I measured carefully before buying it. I like like the printer's sleek appearance.

The control buttons are very easy to use. I like having two feeder options: one from the back (for my used one-sided paper) and one from the cassette (for my fresh paper). The paper in the cassette sits inside the printer and is apparently dust-free.

I even discovered that if I leave the front tray closed, it opens automatically before printing. So when not printing it can be left closed to keep dust out.

I tried the scanner and need to learn how to use it's several options for where to put the scan, what format (e.g. jpg or PDF), email, etc. It appears to do a very good job. A scanner is not a big issue for me since I won't be using it much. However, one thing which mystified me is how to delete the images that accumulate in the scanner's "My Box." The latter is where all the scanned images are stored. Neither the printed nor the on-screen manual addressed the question of deleting them. Two other reviewers cited this problem. I discovered that you have to go to your computer's "pictures" folder, choose "MP Navigator EX" and delete from there. Easy!! but Canon should have put that into the instructions!!!

Customer Review: A big improvement in every way over my HP
Summary: 5 Stars

Forgetting that this is an all in one unit and simply judging it for it's printing capabilities it away my old HP photo printer. I was really not in the market for an all in one unit since I already had a scanner, but having it all in one unit is convenient. In terms of printing alone the speed and quality is amazing. My old HP never seemed to print the photos looking like they did on the screen no matter how I tried to calibrate the monitor to match the printer output. I used to have to extremely lighten up the picture with image software by trial and error. The Canon gets it almost exact and I haven't changed a setting. I love the idea separate ink tanks. I used to hate buying a tricolor HP cartridge just because one color ran out. I ended up buying a refill kit but that didn't work or hold up. I understand that the Canon has limits to refilling without disabling tank level indictors but I don't I will bother. The Canon inks seem to be pretty good in terms or results and how well they hold up over time. My only complaint and I really don't mind is that it is a bit squeaky when initializing or after printer. I actually exchanged the first one I got just to make sure it wasn't defective. The second one is better but still a bit noisy. I have also checked with others claim they have similar noise issues. The bottom line is that I would still buy this printer if I had to do it all over again. I paid [...] at Circuit City and there was a [...] dollar rebate on it at the time. I don't care about the fact that it doesn't fax since I generally fax things from work. Nowadays most faxable items can just be scanned into an email and If I really had to fax something from home I could just connect the PC's modem which I have never used. I would like it even more if it had wireless network capabilities, but I couldn't find a wireless model from Canon that would have satisfied my printing needs without going to near double the price. There were other brands that had cheap wireless available but not with the same features and or an ink system I was willing to accept.

Anyway... fabulous printer at a great price... enough said!

Customer Review: The "Best" you can buy...
Summary: 5 Stars

Stunning! This printer is incredible!
I purchased this printer by Adorama, over Amazon which is always a good shopping experience - fast delivery good and solid product as promised.
This printer is the yellow of the egg! Great looking - the picture at Amazone is a clear understatement. Yes, he is quite of fair size like others already explained in their evaluation. He is exactly 18 inches wide and 16 iches deep. You also need to calculate a few inches at the front for the papertray and some space above to open the scanner glass.
Anyway, he is worth every inch and it pays to reserve this space for this great printer - the best I ever experienced. The print quality is simply stunning and far above anything what you get from processors at drugstores. I use only Canon paper, 4x6 and 8x10, mostly "Glossy 2" but quality is equal with other Canon papers. I never tried any aftermarket paper products - I am using this printer for pro pictures only and don't like to mess up by being cheap on the paper. Solid paper flow without jams regardless if I use the tray or manual feed. Great and refreshing.
I planned to just have this printer for fast emergencies and continue to send everything out. I changed my mind because the print quality is simply amazing. Scanner and all other features work fine but I use primarily photo printing from the computer.
The set up took just a few minutes and was easy. It comes with good and simple instructions. The software installation runs merely automatic and is also very simple. Anyone can do it. A complete set of (full) print cartridges comes with it and there are also a few sheets of paper to try.
The cartridges are replacable one by one if they are empty - no need to purchase the whole color set as one unit.
The handling is easy even without study of the manual - everything well done for simple use despite the high tech capabilities.
A great buy for a very good price. I have this printer in my photo shop but he would look exclusive in the best furnished office.
This printer rocks!

Customer Review: A good fast printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this multi-function printer for one month. I replaced a Lexmark X83 multi-function printer with this printer. The Canon Pixma MP610 prints crisp and clear pages much faster than the Lexmark I was used to. The scanning function is also much faster, and gives more options for scanning quality. The save function is a little bit confusing when saving several scans per session, as it saves multiple copies of the same scans with the names given to the various scans that are saved in that session. I like the option of saving scans in the PDF format as well.

The black ink cartridge seems to go pretty fast, as the first one is almost empty after about half a ream of paper. The pages were full test pages as well as some large black & white pictures, so the amount of ink used may be about right. The Lexmark was hard on ink too, but the Canon is surprising me how fast the ink is being used up. I haven't changed the cartridge yet, but the initial cartridge installation was easy. I expect the replacement to be easy too. The individual color cartridges also prevents waste as the usual tri-color ink cartridges must be replaced when any one of the colors runs out.

I have not had any difficulty with sheets misfeeding. I have not tried to print anything other than 20 # bond as Canon states that the only specialty papers that can be used are Canon papers. When I need to print index paper, I will try it to see how it prints. Manufacturers often state that only their specialty papers can be used.

I haven't used the memory card slots at this time either, but it's nice to have the option to print from them.

The printer footprint is slightly smaller than the Lexmark, so that has not been a problem.

Overall, I have been very satisfied with this printer, and the price at Amazon was really good.

Customer Review: Excellent All-In-One Printer
Summary: 5 Stars

The Canon PIXMA MP610 is an excellent printer for home use. It replaced an Epson RX500 All-In-One which used 6 ink cartridges (CMY+Black and light cyan and light magenta) that seemed to run out of ink constantly. The Epson was fine for printing quality photos, but we stopped doing that at home. The cost of ink and paper was more than having them printed at Costco. The bottom line - I wanted a more cost effective printer. So far, the Canon has done everything I expected. It has the same size footprint on my desk as the Epson and the operating functions are very similar. However, an additional feature is a second paper tray that slides out from the bottom. This could be used for a different kind/size of paper or more of the same kind of paper. The print speed is faster than the Epson was and the quality is excellent. I still had a few sheets of glossy photo paper so I printed a full 8.5 x 11 print of my granddaughter. The print quality was as good as the Epson, without the two extra light colors.
I believe Epson still makes excellent printers, but for my situation I think the Canon will make my ink cost lower with fewer ink cartridges to replace. (Note: When I was looking at printers I learned that ink jet printers use a small amount of the colored ink even when printing a black only document. This prevents the color print heads from clogging up.)
Finally, Amazon is a great company to deal with. I chose standard delivery and my printer arrived a few days earlier than they estimated. I'm happy!
P.S. I'm using this new printer with a brand new Apple iMac with OS X 10.5 Leopard (lastest OS version) with no problems. The print driver CD supplied with the printer was easy to install and all functions work fine.
