Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002)

Customer Review: Great AIO printer
Summary: 5 Stars

The Pixma MX850 replaced my 6 year old Canon MultiPass F50. What a difference in improvement! I work from home and need an all in one to print, copy, fax and sometimes scan. I did some research and was looking at the MP830 but decided to buy the newly announced MX850. I used already many of the features like duplex printing, color copies single and duplex and the fax. I tested a photo print with the included glossy II 4x6 paper and I am very happy with the quality. It is very fast. Duplex takes a bit longer as it has to pull back and turn the paper. However it saves some paper and makes my stacks smaller fro filing. I have the fax configured to pick up at a double ring tone. The setup was easy using some guidance with the one page instruction (for people who have no patience reading the whole manual). The color LCD shows clear structured menus and allows easy configuration. Also the included software and drivers are good quality and easy to understand. The cartridges have a coding chip and light up when inserted (I do not use third party ink as I did not make very good experience in the past. If you decide to buy such cartridges you most likely will need to transfer the chip to the other cartridge). The MX850 does a great job in printing all my different document types (emails, white papers, spec sheets, brochures, business cards, photos, webpages etc). I cannot judge yet the ink consumption. Ink levels are displayed in both LCD and status display on the PC. I have the printer connected using an USB cable. It has the capability to connect directly to the network which is not a current requirement for me. So far I have not found any negative issues.

Customer Review: Reliable and a fine quality unit at a fantastic price!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the past I've ALWAYS had good experiences with Canon printers (and Canon products altogether). I recently returned an HP C7250 all-in-one (heap of trash) back to my local Costco after 2 months because it was giving me one problem after the other from day one.
I recently purchased this Canon Pixma MX850 all-in-one from my local Best Buy at a price even better than the HP at Costco.
This unit is a little larger (a couple inches here and there) but it more than makes up for it in it's great scans, true to life photo reproductions, and it's abundant features (compared to the HP). Not only is this unit more visually appealing, but upon closer inspection (look and feel) I can see there's some quality craftsmanship that went into this unit. And when it's working it's quite a bit more quite compared to the HP. Even the photo prints look as good (or better) compared to the better rated HP "photosmart" unit (in the photoprint department). BUT, I find the Canon to be MUCH more reliable in keeping to the original colors. But print quality is NOT jeopardized considering this unit is a miser on using ink (which is a GREAT feature). This HP I was previously using was a complete PIG on using ink.
The scans are above average and color reproduction VERY GOOD.
I haven't put this unit to heavy usage (as this unit was purchased for hme usage) but I find it has more than enough features to keep me happy. Considering the above average rating on this unit and the great experinces I've had with Canon in the past, I think I'll have another few years of positive experience with this unit aswell.
I'm exstatic I purchased this Canon!

Customer Review: A very Good Printer for the Intermediate to Advanced User
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very well-engineered printer. I took back my HP 7700 for this one, and I think it was a good decision.

First, the negatives. Don' try to install the software pieces separately, just spend a few minutes reading the manual, and do the Easy Install. Otherwise, you are bound to have some trouble.

Also, the network setup pieces is a little counter-intuitive. You need to hook up your printer via USB first, then tell it that you want to access the printer via the network. That is why you need to read the manual, it is a little confusing.

The printer menus are also a little confusing, they are very nested, and also show options depending on what buttons are pressed on the machine itself (there are COPY, SCAN, FAX, etc., buttons). Once you get used to that, it comes pretty quick.

So I would say the setup is a little time consuming, and if you have a friend or a neighbor who is more tech savvy than you, I think you should call in some favors and ask them to help you out.

But the really, really sweet part of this printer is to just watch it work! To hear the scanner and printer motors, to just sit in AMAZEMENT as this beautiful little piece of Japanese engineering performs its multifunction miracles. In contrast to listening and watching in horror as my old HP printer clunked and whirred and just about tore itself apart just to spit out a couple of pages.

I am wasting a lot more time than I should just figuring out new things for this printer to do, just to see how the heck it is done. It is fun.

I recommend thls printer highly.

Customer Review: Software & User Interface are Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many people who have used printers for decades, I've used a lot of brands but have used many more HP printers than other brands. The problem with HP is that they make good machinery but their software and interfaces suck. To me, when I'm dealing with HP, it feels like I'm back to DOS or an early version of Windows. I've been working with computers as part of my job since 1980 and have used most of the brands of Windows & DOS, many versions of Apple's OS, and even a little UNIX/LINUX. So I have used a great many printers/scanners/etc.

The Canon software feels much more Mac-like. And that's all I'll say about that. Mac users will know what I mean instantly. Better yet, the buttons, color display, and menu on the 850 itself are laid out well, very intuitive, and do the job very well. Overall, the software and hardware interfaces are way beyond what I expect for the price, way better than any HP equivalent, and probably at least as good as any other brand.

The hardware itself? I have not found anything I don't like. I like having a front and rear tray for paper, the USB port on the front, the exit tray opening on it's own from a closed position when outputting paper, it's general quality, and it's heftiness. This is not light machine meant to wear out soon.

Can't say how it is for consumables. But the output is at least as good as what I expect for a printer of this type. The bottom line for me, though, is that it does what it is supposed to and it is very easy to make it do that job, both from the computer and by using only the button interface.

Customer Review: Great Printer..Better than HP 7310
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the HP 7310 while I lived in Asia which was my first all-in-one printer. I still use it in my office and thought it was the best printer I had owned, until I purchased this printer. I read the reviews and the printer lives up to the hype. I haven't used all the functions yet and I don't plan on printing photo quality pictures, but I do print in a lot of color for business purposes. It's fantastic. The scanner feeder is much more efficient than my HP and the software that comes with it is very user friendly. It works incredibly well with Adobe professional software. The flatbed scanner is the best I have ever used.

I love the ink cartridges. A little orange light glows when the catridges are inserted properly and the color quality is top notch.

The time to set up the printer was not nearly as bad as some reviews have said. If your computer literate whatsoever, it will take 15 minutes to set it up and have the software on your computer.

The one and only downfall is the size of the printer. WHen you read a review that it's big, it's true..It's HUGE! That being said, the quality of the machine is high end. It's well constructed and all of the moving parts are well made. Considerably better quality than the HP and that's not a knock against HP so much as high praise for canon.

I would recommend this printer to anyone and consider replacing my HP in my office now that it will not recognize ink cartridges. Nice work by Canon.
