Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002)
I just purchased the MX-850 about a week ago from [...] for [...] plus free shipping. The printer itself makes great looking copies, and prints fantastic 4x6 Color photos using Canon's own branded Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. I just replaced my old Pixima IP3000 with the MX-850 and I must say that it is a great improvement over the earlier model especially when printing color photos. However, Canon's software is still confusing as heck when installing on my Imac. After installation on a Mac the software is no where to be found until you try to print something out. Then an icon magically appears on the desktop screen and it's not integrated with the scanning software which I had to find separately in applications folder. But all in all I give this printer 5 stars for its print quality. Scan quality is also good but not great. I bought the MX-850 over the new MX-860 because of its larger cl-8, and PGI-5 cartridges compared to the much smaller capacity ink cartridges in the new 860 which seems to be Canons way of screwing its customers into buying new smaller capacity ink cartridges that don't last as long. I also recommend that customers only buy Canon ink. I used cheaper non OEM ink cartridges on my ip3000 which clogged up its print heads and rendered the old printer unusable.
Customer Review: Very good unit and setup easy (compared to my HP problems) Summary: 5 Stars
PIXMA MX850 review. Bottomline - very good unit. My story:
I first tried to go with HP All-In-One, mainly because it seems the ink usage would be lower than Canon's. I bought and tried to install both the OfficeJet L7590 and then the new OJ 8500. I was doing a network install. Very frustrating with both - weak instructions, network only finally connected when I used static IP (not part of instructions), but the killer was that HP's scan software just would not work on both. Several hours on phone (twice) with HP tech support did not solve problems. I returned both HP's.
And I went Canon. Considered both the MX850 and the new MX860. Went with MX850 because of excellent past reviews, I did not need wireless, and it has bigger ink cartridges than the MX860 (hopefully, less ink usage). Setup went smoothly, good instructions, intial printer initialization no problem, then network connection to 1st computer and then 2nd and 3rd computer no problem. Overall process much easier and quicker than with HP. In about 5 days usage, everything works good - printing, scanning, ADP, duplex. Print quality is good, speed is fine, unit is quiet, low power use. And the MX850 is much less expensive than the HP 8500. Overall, I really like the MX850.
Note: the MX850 is getting hard to fine as it is being replaced with the new MX860. The MX860 looks similar but it is smaller and has wireless, and actually a bit less expensive.
Customer Review: Another superb Canon product! Summary: 5 Stars
5 Stars! I've used this printer for a couple of weeks and have found that the photo printing quality alone is enough to make me happy that I bought it. It makes beautiful borderless 4x6 inch prints with vibrant colors and very nice detail. They look to me like they came from a photo lab. I like the automatic document feeder, too. I had a few problems using it, but it could just be my inexperience with the printer that caused them. The paper jammed a few times. Also, the scanner software on my PC died several times, saying that it didn't have enough memory. I got past that after I quit some applications and scanned without asking for any post-processing. (I have 2 GB of memory on the PC.) Otherwise, the ADF is a very convenient option to have. I wouldn't even consider scanning more than a few pages at a time without one. The pages scan fairly quickly, too. An even more cool feature, though, is 2-sided printing. It prints both sides of a document without asking me to turn the pages over. I like that! After printing one side of a page it pulls it back from the output area and prints the other side. Very cool. I've never had this feature on any printer that I could afford. It makes it so much easier to print multiple 2-sided documents, because I don't need to stay by the printer to keep turning over piles of papers. Output quality is also excellent, better than any printer that I've owned in the past. Nice work, Canon.
Customer Review: Excellent Multi-Purpose Printer! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this printer from Amazon and everything's been great. Receiving it ahead of schedule and at a good price. The printer has performed flawlessly so far, copying, printing and scanning are real quick and it was very easy to install. Well, that doesn't go for setting up on a network but, like all the earlier reviews, it took some doing. I know I didn't follow the steps to a "T" but still got it done in a reasonable amount of time. The cartridges will be costly at about $15-$17 each, times 5 (ouch) but, what printer doesn't cost much for ink?? The footprint is reasonable and great for my needs.
I do a lot of printing and I highly recommend this printer!
It's now Jan '09 and I've used it a lot except nothing with the fax yet. This printer is still great. It takes some getting use to but, with shortcuts set up, scanning is a breeze and quick. Printing and copying is real easy and very quick. I did replace a black cartridge recently and it was simple to replace with the printing picking up where I left off. You'll get warning that the ink tank is low but keep printing. It'll finally say "no ink" and that's when I replaced it. The output still looked fine so maybe you could get a few more pages? The only complaint I have is the input tray capacity. Before I retired I was used to printers that could hold a ream of paper. I'll adjust before I go back to work!
Customer Review: I love this printer/scanner! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had great success with this Canon multi-function printer. I mostly use it for printing and scanning. The print quality is good and I have had no problem with it until this past weekend (but my problem was solved). There was a short power outage and when I went to use the printer, it was off from when the power went out. When I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. I got on this site, as well as other sites, to find a solution to the problem. I also e-mailed the Canon support people. They got back with me that same day. They suggested I take out the print head, but mine was stuck to the right, and I shouldn't force it. In that case, I would not be able to remove the print head, and I should make sure the power cord was plugged directly into a wall AC outlet, not the power strip that I had it plugged into. It was also suggested to remove the power cord from the back of the printer, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in, ensuring it was completely pushed in. It still would not power on, so it was suggested that I unplug the power cord for at least 20 minutes (I unplugged it and left for 7 hours). I plugged it in the wall outlet when I got back - hooray! The printer turned on and is functioning properly. I also plugged it back into the power strip after that and it is still working!
