Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002)Customer Review: Great All in One Printer Summary: 5 Stars
I am a fairly heavy user and have been very happy with this product. I print about 1500-2000 pages a month including fax. I have had the printer for about a month and have not had any problems. Set up was very simple. Print quality and speed are both great. It goes through ink pretty quickly - I just put in my 3rd black ink cartridge - but I don't think it's any worse than most ink jet printers, and definitely better than some.
The only negative I have found is the auto-doc feeder is incredibly noisy and sounds like it is falling apart. But it works fine. [Edited after about 6 months of use: the auto doc feeder does not work for faxing multiple page documents. I have no idea why, since it seems to work for copying documents. Occasionally it will handle a 2 page fax, but usually I have to scan the pages one at a time to send multiple page faxes. Still overall, this is a GREAT printer for the price. I just finished using it to print 850 6-part W-2's without a single glitch.]
This is by far the best All in One printer (in this price range) I have owned in the 10 years I've been in business.
Customer Review: Excellent All-In-One Printer. Summary: 5 Stars
After much searching and comparing, I found this product. Only 20 days have passed since their first use and I'm very happy, although I have not tried the scanner function.
The printing and copying speed is quite good (although not so when using the duplex function, but is acceptable if one takes into account the savings in paper consumption and time).
The photo quality is better.
The ADF is excellent and its two feeder trays are quite comfortable.
The fax feature is a little tricky to handle, but I hope to master it soon.
The initial preparation of the machine to its first use could not be simpler.
Its weight and size are adequate, considering all its features.
Its design is pleasant and attractive.
I'll wish that (if not too much to ask):
Cordless Handset.
flash drive (USB).
The scanner does not require a PC (scan directly to USB).
Wireless connectivity.
I hope to comment later on the ink.
In conclusion, I recommend this product 100%.
Customer Review: Hello Canon, goodbye HP Summary: 5 Stars
I'm extremely happy with this multifunction. I used to only buy HPs as I figured these were the only printers of high quality. Canon definitely beats HP in every respect. I'm glad I took a shot on it.
The things I like about this multifunction are:
1. It doesn't require bulky software: The software can be installed with minimal impact on your machine. It doesn't require bulky software or registry entries to allow it to run.
2. It scans quickly and efficiently, as well as in duplex. I had always wanted to convert my office to paperless. This multifunction scans fairly quickly and allows you to set a stack of documents into the feeder without a consistent fear of paper jams.
3. It quickly and easily removes canceled print jobs or paper jams. It doesn't make you wait a half hour while it figures out what it's going to do.
4. It networks easily with a little network utility.
So much more I can say about this machine, but needless to say, I will never buy another HP again. I'm onto Canons now.
Customer Review: Exceeds Expectations -- Mac and Windows Both Summary: 5 Stars
Hard to imagine that a $150-175 printer can be hooked up to your network on the first floor and scan multi-page documents to your Mac upstairs, either from the scanner, or from the Mac.
Print quality and scan quality are more than adequate. I won't say "excellent" only because I haven't pushed it that hard. The photos we printed out look great though. The ADF duplex scanner is bonus.
Printing with the Mac over the network was trivial; its supported nicely and transparently, once set up.
There is some trickiness with the new Mac application-keyed firewall in 10.5, but it works great if you manually accept the scan app connection. Its a minor thing and if I wasn't so security ana -- oops, conscious, I'd just turn off the firewall when I wanted to scan.
Works great under WinXP and Vista both.
Rumor has it that it can print under CUPS with cups-bnjp and "recently, Louis has also worked on adding BJNP support to the Sane pixma backend ..." so Linux users shouldn't be left out by this one either.
Customer Review: Very nice, only a few small complaints Summary: 5 Stars
I'll add to this review in the future. I am really happy with the duplex scanning and printing capability, and the photo print quality blows me away.
But for now, two minor annoyances and two tips on dealing with them:
1. The scanning software puts up tons of useless status windows that steal focus from your other apps. To solve this in Vista, download a virtual desktop manager like VirtuaWin and create a rule to place MP Navigator EX on its own virtual desktop. Windows Key + arrow key lets you quickly switch desktops.
2. The scanner ADF output needs a stop to keep paper from being pushed over the side of the unit. I made one out of cardboard and scotch tape that folds down for legal-size scans.
Random info
- upgrading the firmware on the printer is pretty easy
- 25 8.5"x11" photo prints on Canon's Photo Paper Plus Glossy II used up about 30% of the color ink cartridges
- there is a ridiculous 32-character filename length limit on saving scanned images. WHY?
