Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001)

Customer Review: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! I'm thrilled with this printer. Absolutely thrilled. I can't believe I have such a great printer at such an affordable price.

I have a low-end Canon printer at home, another in my art studio and two others in my design classroom and I was searching for a Canon when I was researching large format printers. I am very impressed by the sturdiness and reliability of all my Canon printers and very satisfied with their ink cartridge system and wanted to stick with the Canon brand.

I haven't printed photos yet--but will. (Using CS3--well, soon CS4). Right now, I'm using the printer to print images from a topographical map program. I'm scaling up portions of the maps into other media and I was becoming frustrated with the limitations of a 15" laptop screen and an 8.5 x 11" print. Now, I'm using a 30" Apple Cinema Display and printing on 13 x 19 paper and experiencing printing nirvana.

I'm using 24 lb bright white bond that I got from an internet source; just search for "13 x 19" paper and you'll find a wide range of paper at good prices.

I do like that the printer completely closes (good for dust control) but nonetheless I made a custom cover for it, partly to camouflage its bulk. As others have noted, the printer is BIG, so allow for a wide stand and plenty of room for the front and back paper trays.

Three tips:
First, I did have some trouble learning how to use the front sheet loader. Silly me, I thought the paper would feed from the front and exit the back, but instead, you manually feed the paper from the front toward the back and the printed sheet then exits the front. Once I understood the paper path, I did appreciate that the printer drivers prompt you to insert the paper, press the front feed button, etc.

Second, if you want to use the auto feed for 13 x 19 paper (for proofing, or if, like me, you're printing chart-type output on bond paper) note that the auto feed only supports paper up to 12.95 x 23 inches (even though the paper feed is wide enough to handle 13" media.) To print on 13 x 19 paper, just set up a custom paper size of 12.95 x 19 and print away.

Three, although the specs say the printer will print on lighter weight paper (17 lb, if I recall correctly) I wouldn't use anything less than 24 lb if you're going to use the auto feeder. I just feel that there is a good chance of paper jams with lighter weight paper.

Customer Review: Fantastic quality, and incredible speed.

This is just a quick review, as most has already been said about this printer. I have used it for about a month now, and I am still stunned by the quality of print that comes from this machine. I have had many printers over the years, and still have a few A4 printers. I use my printers for both personal, and professional print work. This printer is very fast when printing in color. Considering the range of colors, and the accuracy it delivers time after time, I find it hard to believe that a printer at this price can spit out a full 13x19 lab quality print in about 1 min, 20 sec. It will print a similar 8x10 in about 30 sec. Wow.... The color is stunning, and better than a commercial lab, as you can tune your print to exactly produce the result you want, and deliver the finished product within minutes. It's an entirely new level of home/studio photo printing. Pigment based printing has become the rage lately, as it has great colorfastness over time. Canon offers a pigment based printer in this class as well, but it does have a serious cost penalty. The truth is, the new dye based inks used in the 9000 are solid for over 100 years in storage, and over 30 years on display. That beats old fashioned "chrome" prints to near death. The new dyes also offer beautiful "visual impact" that many pigment printers still lack. Dark shadow areas remain clean as well, and do not suffer from "brassing" where pigment piles up, and changes the sheen of the paper surface. It's the bargain of the century that delivers awesome images on a wide variety of paper types. The driver/sofware suite is very well done, and offers many choices. You don't have to work around it. You simply work with it, and get a big smile every time. The downside is that if you print lots of large B&W prints, there are better choices out there. The 9000 does a splendid job of printing B&W, but it takes a LONG time to print a 13x19 image. I'm talking about 16 minutes..... Monochrome isn't so bad in time, and delivers very nice images, but if you are looking for true B&W prints that will stun viewers, you have to be patient when printing them. That's OK for me, as I only print fine quality B&W every now and then. The speed of full color printing on the 9000 is more important to me overall. There it is. The 9000 is a great printing tool, at an affordable price point.

Customer Review: Awesome printer, awesome prints

I honestly couldn't be any happier than I am with my Canon Pixma 9000. This is the first dedicated photo printer I've purchased... until I saw some sample prints at a local Staples, I wasn't convinced that I wanted to be bothered printing my work, after all it looks pretty great on a decent sized monitor. But believe me, once you see a 13x19 borderless print that is printed exactly the way you want and literally pops off the page, you'll be sold too.

As far as the build goes, this thing is honkin' HUGE and extremely heavy. The footprint is somewhat large even in comparison to other 13x19 printers I've seen, but it has a clean look and folds up to a perfect rectangular block when not in use (which makes it easier to transport and store; probably even moreso than other models that are physically smaller.) When you are printing from the front tray (on thicker papers), you need a significant clearance in front of and behind the printer; it has wheels so it can easily be pulled away from a wall when in use.

The print quality is, well, perfect. As many have noted, there is no difference between the 13x19s this device prints and something from a lab. The software it comes with is surprisingly helpful too - not some amateur photo printing package, but a CS/CS2/CS3 plugin that is designed specifically for this printer that does all of the color management work for you... a further reflection that this really is a professional grade printer. It prints on a wide range of papers, and the front loading feature makes it a little less scary to feed some 3rd party media into the printer. What's truly amazing is the SPEED at which this thing can bang out prints... it's VERY, VERY fast (13x19 at the very best quality setting has yet to exceed 1.5min for me.)

Sure, the ink is expensive, as is the large format paper this thing takes... it isn't cheap to run. But it's well worth it when you see your work in all of its glory.

Qualms? I have very few. This printer does make a lot of mechanical noises that sometimes sound unhealthy, as though someone is trying to beat their way out from the inside... but this is something that anyone who has an inkjet printer has come to expect.

Customer Review: Excellent Printer
Summary: 5 Stars

After owning a slew of "regular" printers, I finally upgraded to a "real" photo printer and wanted wide format capabilities. The Canon Pro9000 has gone beyond my expectations. The quality of print from this machine is awesome to say the least. It has yet to produce a streak, blotch or ??????. Picture perfect every single time.

Upon arrival, the set up was very simple and easy using the supplied guide. It took about an hour to get it all together and I took my careful time doing so. Within another 30 minutes, the first photo was completed. Since then, I've not had one issue with this machine. It's been used for everything from small photos to 13" x 19" works and also daily document printing for my business too. I've had this printer for 30 days and used it enough to replace the black and yellow ink catridges once each. A few others are on the verge of changing too.

All wide format printing has been done on Canon papers exclusively and I doubt I'll use others. It has produced prints on Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Matte, Museum Etch and Photo Rag with results beyond my expectations. For my business documents, I've used regular everyday paper bought at a large discount store and have had no issues whatsoever. I also ran some 8x10's on Kodak Glossy paper and they came out perfectly fine, although the Canon paper shows a slightly better resolution and depth. I can only tell the difference when they are side by side but it's apparent this machine's drivers are set perfectly for Canon paper and it likes it own brand of paper. I am sure the drivers can be manipulated but why bother when the perfect match is already available?

In my opinion, the cost of this printer in comparision to the end result is of superb value. Do not hesitate to buy this machine. You will be so pleased that I recommend you start stocking up on ink and money for matting/framing supplies. By the way, the Canon software works wonders. I Photoshop my photos and then run them through the Canon software to print. What I see on the screen typically looks as good if not better once printed. Take your photography to the next level, buy this machine. I wish I had sooner.

Have a great day,
Peter

Customer Review: Very pleased with the purchase.

I carefully read every review I could find on this printer. For the most part I found the bad reviews more revealing than the good ones. Almost every problem in the complaints that were not Canon customer service related were about printing issues that aren't really related to the printer itself. Most of the reviews complaining about quality or ease of use were people who really did not understand how to use it. I found it very simple to use but this is something I am very familiar with.

Installation was pretty easy. Standard software first kinda thing. I aligned the printer head as part of the automated install and immediately turned out a very high quality 13X19 photo print. This is less than 10 minutes after opening the box.

I read the specs but you still don't realize how big this thing is until you see it. IT HAS WHEELS!....well two anyway. They are handy to move the printer forward from a storage position on your desk. I really like how the entire printer closes up to a sealed unit to cut down on dust in the printer.

This is my third Canon printer and I am used to the ink cartridge system. The software keeps track of ink levels and starts nagging you a while before each cartridge runs completely out. Which from experience is often if you print lots of photos. Canon ink is expensive but you get exactly what you pay for. Refill ink is simply not going to work for photos. Be prepared to shell out full pop $80 for ink at least once a year.

As others have complained about, no USB cord. Well I needed a really long one anyway. I am not to concerned about it. I would like to have seen some sample large format paper in there but none of that either :)

This is a very heavy printer. Be sure you examine it carefully for shipping damage. I found the Styrofoam showing signs of extreme impact. Thankfully the printer is well packed but be sure!

I wish all my recent purchases were as pleasing as this one. If you have been holding off, quit living without it. Get it.
