Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001)Customer Review: Great Choice after reading several reviews Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Pro9000 about a month ago. I had planned to purchase the Pro9500 but was researching the differences that made it worth the higher price tag. Two friends have the Pro9000 and they think it's great. I've personally used a 6700D for sometime after switching from HP to Canon. The 6700D has been a great 8x10 photo printer. I read several reviews on HP, Epson & Canon... found a few great reviews... the iPhoto comparison of all 3 brands and similar models was very helpful and the Pro9000 and Pro9500 iPhoto reviews were a great comparison too. Since the Pro9000 was reviewed at several sights to produce better results on ProPaper Gloss than the Pro9500; and the Pro9500 didn't do better in color prints using the better inks (again per several reviews), and the only area of improvement was the grey scale B&W prints (inks & number of inks)... the 3 times greater price wasn't justified to me! Besides, I'm considering a large format printer in the near future.... which would perform the same duty as the Pro9500 with much larger prints, so the choice of Ink wasn't as vital to me.
I did a few prints and decided the OEM and various photo app profiles were not satisfactory, so I had several papers custom profiled by InkJetArt for the Pro9000 similar to the profiles for the 6700D.
After this was done, the prints were outstanding... very satisfied.
Since then, I've learned of a new Spyder3 Suite (monitor & printer) profiling system is now availble at a home-price value... so I'll be trading in my EyeOne Display2 for the Spyder3 Suite to obtain additional profiles.
Overall, the speed, noise and quality are all better than expected... so I would confidently recommend the Canon Pro9000 to any serious amature or pro in search of this caliber of printer. If it continues to perform, like the little brother 6700D... it'll be a great purchase & value.
In addition, with the money saved in comparison to the Pro9500... I can add another Lens to my camera bag for more enjoyment!!
Customer Review: Perfect for Design School Summary: 5 Stars
***UPDATE: September 2010: I've owned this printer for almost 3 years now and it's still performing wonderfully. I've printed countless portfolio books and posters that have gotten many compliments on color richness and quality (especially depending on what paper you use). Graphic design majors at my school were talking about "throwing away their Epsons and switching over to Canon" after seeing my prints. It also handles extremely thick cardstock and transparencies without any trouble feeding, where friends of mine with Epsons have had problems.
The only downside is the "Photo" ink cartridges (cyan and magenta) seem to run out at a disproportionate rate over the other inks, making it harder to just buy ink bundles.
I bought the Canon Pro9000 when I was entering design school a little over a year ago and needed a large format printer. After ordering it, I found out from everyone at Art Center (my school) that Epson is the industry standard and that everyone should buy an Epson (more specifically, the R1900, which is probably the comparable version to the Canon Pro9000).
I had just bought my Canon not knowing that everyone used Epson, but after sticking with my Pro9000 for 1.5 years, I have never received so many compliments on my print jobs. Everyone prefaces their compliments with, "You have an Epson, right?" and I'm always clarifying that it's a Canon... it's the consensus among my classmates that my prints come out FAR nicer than their Epsons. The Canon blacks are far blacker and the colors are just amazingly richer.
Also, I use my Canon printer with Epson paper and I don't have a problem at all; my prints still come out beautifully.
However, the printer is VERY heavy and takes up a lot of room on the desk, as many people have mentioned, but if you have the space and you don't plan on moving it around the house, it shouldn't pose a problem.
Customer Review: Amazing Printer Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing printer!
For years, I've gone with HP printers. I wanted a wide format printer, but was not at all impressed with the HP wide format printer that I got a year or so back. I had narrowed my choice down to the Canon Pixma Pro9000 or the Epson Stylus Photo R1800. I really wanted the ability to both print directly on CDs/DVDs and produce professional quality photographs. The Epson R1800 did both. The Canon Pro9000, though, did not have the CD/DVD printing capability. However, I was concerned about the reports of Epson's ink guzzling and print head clogging. I actually bought an Epson inkjet printer some years back and returned it because of the huge ink consumption.
I ultimately decided on the Canon printer, and could not be happier. The prints are incredible. I'd say that they are as good if not better than professional prints. The printer requires eight different ink cartridges, two of which are photo cartridges. I've used up the photo cartridges much faster than the others, but would certainly not describe the printer as ink guzzling.
After I got the printer, I discovered, much to my delight, that the Canon Pro9000 actually has the capability to print on CDs/DVDs. However, that feature is turned off on the US printers, supposedly because of some agreement between Canon and Epson. I was able to locate and purchase the "E" tray that comes with the Canon Pro9000 printers sold in Europe. In addition, I found both instructions on how to convert the US Canon printer to a European Canon printer so that it can print on CDs/DVDs, and software that could be downloaded to accomplish all of this. I can now produce professional looking CDs/DVDs and photographs.
Bottom line, I could not be happier!
Customer Review: Pro 9000 or 9500?? Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first review ever written but I thought this might be helpful to someone debating over which printer to buy. I read several information items and reviews before I decided to purchase the 9000. The first thing that troubled me was that Canon had the 9500 in Europe and wouldn't release it in the US, even though they indicated they would, and then they stopped sales for a recall???? The second issue had to do with minor issues that users were printing in blogs about the 9500 printer. The third issued had to do with price. The 9500 in the $800 to $900 range while I purchase the 9000 at Best Buy for $450. I know I could have purchased it on the internet cheaper but I wanted a place to personally return it if I had problems. I must say that I do not regret my choice. The set up was easy. Follow the instructions step by step, line by line. Mt first 2 prints were 4 x6, then I went for the 13 x 19 of 2 Thunderbirds, one up and one down. The print was breathtaking. I took it to a framer yesterday and she just marvelled over the print. She advised me to enter the local photo contest next year because it was certainly the best print she saw after review of the entered prints. I also printed some black and white photos and they are exceptional. I can't comment on the 9500 but I made my choice on the reviews of the 2 printers, and the cost. I'm an amature photographer, using a Canon 30D with a EF 70-200 IS, F2.8 lens, and the EF 28-70, f2.8. I also shoot in raw data.
Customer Review: A Superb product Summary: 5 Stars
This printer is a first rate piece of technology. Everything from its paper handling to its print quality to the software utilities that accompany it are excellent. It has greatly exceeded my expectations and has far outperformed other printers I have owned over the past 15 years.
I have had some prints done by a professional lab for comparison purposes. The Canon is indistinguishable in its quality. Once it is properly set up, you get a very accurate transfer of color and luminence from screen to paper - a feat that has been close to impossible with other printers I have used. The fact that you can accurately edit a picture and predict the appearance of the print so reliably saves you a tremendous amount of time and money.
The print drivers that Canon includes are well documented, but you must take some time to read and understang the process of using them to get the best results. Once you have yours properly set up, you will quickly become addicted to the results.
Its paper handling is especially noteworthy. Heavy stock that requires hand feeding and constant supervision with other printers can be batch loaded and print flawlessly with the Canon. If you value your time and your sanity, you will appreciate what this means.
Worth every penny!
