Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer (2171B002)

Customer Review: Canon Pixma iP4500 is excellent printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Canon Pixma iP4500 inkjet printer to replace an old Canon i850 color inkjet printer. The old printer worked great for a few years, then stopped working properly even though I used only Canon ink cartridges. So far the iP4500 seems to print text and photos very well - actually better than the old printer. I am hoping it lasts longer than the i850.

The ink cartridges are very easy to change. The on-screen display while printing give you plenty of warning when the ink is running out. When it is time to replace an ink cartridge, it is a simple matter of raising the lid on the ink cartridge bay, and then replacing the cartridge with a blinking light. The ink for the iP4500 does not seem to smear after drying the way the ink used in the i850 did. The two paper trays are very useful to me. I use the bottom tray for letter paper and the top feed for photo paper. I have the software set to allow switching between the two trays when necessary - very easy to use and much nicer than the old printer. Also, the iP4500 will do duplex (front and back) printing automatically - does not require re-feeding the back side of the page.

Customer Review: Exceeded my expectations
Summary: 5 Stars

I've only had this printer for one day, but I want to do a review before I forget. I've owned nothing but Canon ink jet printers for the past 6 years--S450, S600 & S750. Those were very good printers and this iP4500 is a good unit too. Colors are pretty accurate and the resolution on text is amazing--even very small type has outstanding resolution--better than the aforementioned printers.

I guess I wont be able to buy cheap ink anymore as there are small circuit cards at the bottom of each tank to verify that the ink is Canon ink. Still if this printer holds up for at least 2 or 3 years (which seems to be about the maximum life of the Canon printers I've owned) I will be happy. Here's a picture of my start page on a Sony Trinitron monitor and the printer's page right next to the monitor. It has a little bit of trouble with the orange color, but the text is outstanding. The resolution on the text on the paper seems to be better than what is on the monitor:

BTW, do not waste your money on the Canon iP1800. It is just as bad as this printer is good.

Customer Review: Good printer for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

After much deliberating between brands and features, I decided to go with a medium priced printer for my general purpose printing and some photo printing.

When the printer arrived I was a little surprised too at how big the box was but the printer still fits nicely on a standard stand.

Setup is a snap. Install the Printer Head, he Cartridges, install the driver and plug it in. That's it. I am happy to see that Canon provides 64bit drivers for most of their printers now so it was not problem on my Vista 64 bit machine.

The driver naturally automatically installs selections for most Canon papers and printing a Borderless 4x6 using the Canon 4x6 Glossy Plus Paper resulted in pretty good colors in comparison to my calibrated monitor. I do not recommend to have the driver manage colors, let the Software do it (like Photoshop) it's just doing a better job at it.

Overall, I think it's a great value and a good and fairly fast printer.
The added bonus of having 2 trays (I use the cassette for plain paper) saves me time in switching paper around.

Customer Review: One Happy Granddaughter
Summary: 5 Stars

Printer purchased for my 10 year old grandaughter after she inherited my eMac - the other members of her family have PCs. After she unsuccessfully tried to print a school assignment on one of her family's printers where she had used 'Appleworks' and unfortunately (for her and her teacher) had to complete the assignment in cursive, and because I, in California, couldn't help her, in Arizona, I decided to purchase her her very own printer.
I chose an HP for her since both her family and I all have trouble-free HP printers. This one is no exception. On my latest trip to AZ, she and I setup her printer. I had her read and follow the instructions - which she did with ease.
After two weeks of operation, it appears to be working well, she is happy, her parents and siblings are happy, her teachers are happy and I sure am. Would highly recommend this printer. It is user friendly and has features, such as the ability to do two-sided printing, that can be found on more expensive models.

Customer Review: ip4500 does NOT print on CD/DVD dics
Summary: 5 Stars

have had the printer for a few weeks now, it works great and prints great, but it will not print directly on CD/DVD discs directly. canon support even suggested it is best not to print on the paper labels. did not say never do it, just suggests not to. will have to try sometime later to print on the labels. have not tried the lower cartridge to load with paper, but I would rather print with the rear paper to print directly on the paper as if it was photo paper. the 1 big odd advantage it has over printers I have had in the past is that it prints even at the slowest speed less than a minute for 8x10 pictures and printing multiple pages front and back, it will print without having to turn the paper over or around. after it prints so far and finhes, it will pull the paper back in and start printing the other side. compared to other printers draft mode, the IP4500 is actually told to slow down to print but is still extremly fast to print. it is still an excellent all around printer.
