I purchased a canon a700 2 years ago and have not regretted it.
The operation is identical as far as I can determine to the a720,its successor. The current model,a720,has more pixels than the a700 and it also has image stabilization.
I purchased the a720 base on my experiences for my daughter and recommended it to my brother who is a professional photographer.
Before I took a trip to Italy I purchased the canon batteries and recharger. I used the camera for 10 days without recharging the batteries.
The photos were superb. My only complaint is that on very sunny days I had to use the viewer since the screen was washed out.
I tried the various modes including movie. All worked well but for the most part I selected the auto mode. This satisfactory for virtually any situation.

Loaded with more features than I will probably ever use. Got the camera because Canon has a solid line of cameras. Really like the zoom and image stabilization, the 2 main reasons I got the camera. Also, amazon.com has it at a great price. The camera is a good size, fits nicely in my hands. I also like the view finder. Not many cameras have a view finder now days, which forces you to use the LCD, which in turn eats up the batteries. So, I only use the LCD to view photos, and can take a lot of photos on a couple of batteries.
The only thing I don't like is that the flash will give some people Red Eye although there is a setting to minimize it. Course, most any camera will give Red Eye. The only way I have found to prevent it is to use a separate flash that is at least 6 inches away from the lense.

I purchased this camera awhile back and I'm very impressed with the quality.
My one and only complaint would be the massive amount of documentation that comes with it. I'm still using auto mode because I haven't gotten thru the pages and pages of info. The manual is 208 pages long, the English portion of the direct print user guide is 77 pages and the English part of the software guide is 88 pages. Too much information! I don't know if I'll ever learn how to use this camera. A quick start guide would be nice.
The little tidbit that you should format the memory card comes on page 56 of the manual. It should be at the front of the manual where it tells you how to install the card!
This is bad. I usually complain of tech stuff that doesn't have ENOUGH info. Not this time!

This is my second canon digital camera. You can't go wrong with a Canon- great lens great design and great features. I got this camera since I wanted a camera with a little better zoom than the normal 3X. This is 6 times and the only thing I wish this camera had was still a little better zoom at the same size. I love that it takes regular batteries - I use the rechargables. It also uses a the most common media which is an SD card. It has manual controls that I use a lot and the pictures are crisp and clear thanks to the great canon lens. The screen is large enough and clear. In addition its light weight and easy to handle. The second only thing I would change about this if it was slightly smaller. Overall it's a fantastic camera and easy to use would not buy anything other than a canon camera.Customer Review: Excellent Service

This is my second Canon digital camera and my 720 IS had a problem with the optical focus and lens cover. Since this occurred 10 months into the warranty year, I contacted Canon online. They asked me to return the stripped camera with the necessary paper work, which i did. After receiving the camera, Canon Factory Service Center kept me informed of the status of my camera before and after the repairs. I was told when the camera was shipped. In addition, 3 months of warranty were added for the repaired parts. All of this happened within a week's time. I don't know what more I could ask from a service repair facility.
Of course, it would have been better if the repair had not been needed in such a short period of time but, given the need for repair, the service was excellent.
