Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch LCDCustomer Review: AMAZING. Summary: 5 Stars
I've been wanting a waterproof dig camera for a while but the depth limits of most (typically 10') turned me off. Along comes the Canon D10. The fact that it can go down to depths of 30' got me interested...then I read several online reviews and comparisons and this camera always ended up rated great, so i picked one up before heading to a trip to Jamaica.
Its AWESOME.
I had this camera with me regardless of the setting: swimming in the ocean, pool, waterfall, wherever and whenever. Its controlls are easy. Its settings are powerful. Its picture and video quality is phenom.
Tips:
- Use the preset settings function (IE: "sunset" or "underwater", etc).
Canon really tweaks the settings to give you the best pictures under the defined conditions.
- Read the manual. This camera has some powerful features that are easy to miss.
Ive owned a G9 for years but never took the time to learn the special features it could do such as isolate a single color and display all else as black and white.
With this camera i read the manual from front to back on the flight and am glad i did. Trust me, its worth your time to do this. dont just use it as point and shoot in Auto. You'll love what you can do.
- The accessories kit. Its certainly ridiculously overpriced, however the accessories cables are handy. I used the long cable as an over the shoulder strap for snorkling. It easily zips tight when swimming and loosens for easy shots
and video without ever worring about dropping the camera. I used the caribeaner cable for walking thru waterfalls or leaning over boats sides so that even if i dropped the camera, it'd still be attached to me. Worth it if you will take the camera on more action based situations.
The canon D10 will run you a little bit more than the other underwaters in its class but you will be happy you spent it. Its awesome.
Customer Review: So happy I bought this camera Summary: 5 Stars
I am so happy that I decided to buy this camera! The picture quality is great.
I love how durable it is. Even though I travel with it in a case, I no longer am worried about piling it in my backpack with a ton of other stuff when I'm going out to the beach or something. You can drop this in the sand without it damaging any mechanically moving parts.
This camera is really great about battery use. When you set it on automatic mode, it takes really great photos, and usually there is no need for the flash to fire! In an environment where any other camera might fire the flash, Canon D10 seems to be smarter than the rest as it can take the same picture with no flash and produce a crisp image with true color - even in low light.
Underwater, this camera is fantastic! At first, I was a little bit nervous to bring it underwater after reading on this website the reviews about the camera not working after the first underwater use. However, my experience with using this as an underwater camera has been perfect. Underwater mode seems to empathize the colors of certain areas so details on fish, coral and other underwater life are beautifully captured. The compartments that you can open seem sturdy enough, but just in case I always check before entering the water that they are closed completely and that there is no sand in the cracks.
This camera uses an anti red eye flash but in some photos, there you can still see a small amount of red in the eye. Forget about using the red eye remover feature that this camera has, because it will just put a big dark circle that is larger than the eye in the image.
Compared to the other user images taken with underwater point and shoot cameras, this one is superior. Also, I had a disposable underwater camera and those pictures came out awful! Weather you scuba/snorkel regularly, or are like me and just bought it for this one trip - I 100% suggest it to you!
Customer Review: The perfect family holiday camera Summary: 5 Stars
I own an Ixus 95S and was looking for a waterproof housing for a snorkelling trip to the Bahamas and for a little more $$s I found the D10.
It was a tense moment when I threw the then brand new purchase to the kids in the pool (and they threw it around to each other often dropping) then got it covered in sun cream, then sand then sea then back in the pool then out for the evening but I can say with confidence it is both shock proof and child proof.
When we saw the quality of the pictures both above and below water, the original Ixus never left the bag and not sure it ever will again. The reef shots were very detailed after a little lighting adjustment on Photoshop perfect hue and the big screen and button made it easy to use under water. The above water holiday shots had that slightly over saturated look that most compacts lean towards but not a problem for us - some purists may not like. I prefer detail capture over saturation so I don't have to be too accurate in framing and can crop/expand later. The D10 was perfect for this as a lifeless reef shot from 10m away produced some amazing sharp fish close ups when blown up on the PC. I never once took it out of full auto mode - I was on holiday!!
My only two minor points were the size - it is too fat for a pocket and the wrist strap as if snorkelling you really need a good floating strap. Canon sell an attachment which is a crazy price so bought a cheap Olympus one with a bright orange float on it which worked perfectly. Olympus STRAP FLOAT ORANGE I am also wary of the rubber flap covering the cable socket as looks like a point of weakness (you have to make sure it is pushed fully in to ensure waterproof).
We are off skiing in February and it will be the only one travelling with us as no problem dropping this in the snow.
Customer Review: Canon D 10 on the Galapagos Summary: 5 Stars
What a great camera. I took it to the Galapagos Islands for a a hiking, snorkeling trip. Not only did this camera perfrom magnificently, but the pics came out great. I am a point and shoot guy, I don't do F stop, none of that and this camera did it all. While it is very easy to use and the menu's are fairly easy to navigate, there is a bit of cumbersome-ness to flipping thru them until you are familiar with them. I had absolutely no trouble w/ the seals on the camera for water tightness. I was only snorkeling, but managed to dive to 15 or so feet for some of my pics. Its also hot in Ecuador this time of year, (imagine that) and I was sweating bullets, so it was nice to be able to just rinse off the camera at the end of the day and after being in the sea. The write time to the card is good (transcend 16gb class 10 card). Battery life was good, but will decrease with lots of zoom... buy the extra and keep it charged for any trips... movie function is good, although it would have been nice to have a higher def. Speaking of the zoom... it was very, very good.... 3 x zoom was great, I found that I could hold the camera steady enough even up to about 5-6 X digital zoom and still take clear pix. Going much higher than that on the zoom required a rest however, that is not unexpected though. The portability of this camera is decent, its a little more bulky than the other point and shoot cameras, but the extra bulk goes into the shock proofness of this camera. I was literally sprinting thru the airport to catch my flight home, and this camera bounced out of my bag and onto the uncarpeted, marble type floor of the Miami airport with no ill effects except a slight scratch to the outer case. I had no trouble keeping this camera in a cargo pocket in my shorts. I'm very happy with this camera. You can also check out professional reviews on [...]. The reviews there were the main reason I purchased this camera.
Customer Review: Best Family Fun Camera Summary: 5 Stars
Pros: It's small, lightweight, waterproof, does both photo & video, easy to use (easy enough for my grandma even), and has good picture quality. What more could I want!
Cons: I doesn't have a very wide angle, but I knew that going into the purchase. And it did a this weird thing that if I was in video mode and zoomed in during videoing, it wouldn't focus on the subjects. I'm not positive, but I don't think that's normal. I have a regular Canon Powershot 800is (had it now for a few years) and I've never noticed it not keep the focus while zooming in and out during video mode. It was minor irritation, but I thought I should mention it.
I am a professional wedding photographer and am a big fan of Canon products. It is hard for me not to take my big, fat professional cameras with me where ever I go, but when I'm playing around with my kiddos and need something small, lightweight, and not as expensive (in case it gets stolen), the Canon powershot camera line is awesome. So when I decided to get a digital waterproof last minute before a family vacation, it was kind of a no-brainer.
A friend of mine has a cute little, Panosonic digital waterproof camera (bought it almost a year ago) and he loves it. I've seen his images from that camera and they are very good...so I was tempted to go with his recommendation, but being as I already have quite the Canon collection, I know they make good, solid, easy to use products, I decided on this one. Glad I did. I've only owned it for one month but it's already been on two vacations (I lent it to a friend going to Hawaii, plus our family vacation in Alabama) and is currently on a third one (lent it to my sister-in-law on her Mexico honeymoon). So far so good. I don't think anyone has taken it past 6 feet, so I don't know how well it does deeper and such.
