Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Dark Gray)Customer Review: Canon PowerShot SD 1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera Summary: 5 Stars
Initially, I hesitated to switch from traditional film to digital out of fear that a new camera would be too complicated or difficult to understand. This Canon has proven to be incredibly simple to use and the picture quality is sensational.
For those looking for a camera that requires you to do nothing more than point and shoot, this one is the perfect choice. All you have to do is set it to "Auto," and the Canon PowerShot SD 1200IS takes care of everything. On the other hand, if you are a person who prefers to make your own adjustments and settings, that's also simple to do. Menus are clear, logical and easy to understand.
One of the very best features of this Canon is the viewfinder. I can't believe so many other digital cameras lack this extremely useful tool. A hobby I enjoy requires me to be able to take several hundred outdoor pictures in a single day without access to a battery charger. With this Canon, I can turn off the LCD screen and save battery power by simply using the viewfinder instead. Over the past ten days, I have taken more than 1000 pictures (all outdoors, no flash, without using the LCD screen) on a single battery charge. Hard to believe, but the battery still isn't depleted.
Picture quality has been absolutely outstanding. While most of the pictures I've taken so far have been outdoors, even under damp, cloudy conditions the pictures have been clear and crisp. I have taken quite a few pictures indoors with equally impressive results. Even pictures taken of a jack-o-lantern at night, with the flash turned off, turned out perfect, too.
I would highly recommend the Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS to anyone looking for a reasonably priced digital camera that is extremely simple to use and yet loaded with great features.
Customer Review: Thankful Summary: 5 Stars
I need to carry a camera at times for work. With a cell phone, wallet, keys, pens, etc. I don't want a big camera. I tried using different cameras, and even cell phone cameras, but they wouldn't take great photos in all situations unless they were bulky. This one does--at least great for my needs. Sure, in a pitch black cave it won't do well for distance photos, but nothing else does either, until you bring in floodlights.
I've used many of these small camera; I think this is the 5th Canon, among others. I have always been happy with the Canon. The Sony required a strange cord to download--not the ubiquitous mini-usb cord this one uses. Everybody seems to have this cord, so I can leave photos anywhere I run into a computer.
I've been real impressed with the shutter speed. All my photos are based on automatic settings, but it surprises me how often there is enough light--how rarely the flash is used. This takes great pictures in darker settings without using the flash--it's far different from the past cameras I've used.
Sometimes I need closeups in a dark location of small parts. This provides great photos in that situation. It fits easily in my jeans pockets or shirt pocket. I forget it's there over half of the time I carry it and it ends up in my pocket until the day is over.
I like the rechargeable battery too. First, it can take a lot of pictures. The camera this replaced was battery powered and wouldn't take 30% of the photos before the batteries were dying. Sure it had 9x optical, but that isn't important to me. Thus you had to carry extra batteries for it, in addition to an over sized camera.
I'm thankful this was available. And it was nice that Amazon included the free 4 GB card.
Customer Review: Always Shoot a Canon!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned a Canon PowerShot S110 since 2001 and have loved it the entire time I've owned it, despite it only being a 2.1 mega pixel camera. As long as you weren't going to print 8"x10" prints, it is a great snapshot camera. However, I decided that it was about time to upgrade to a 10 or more mega pixel camera. I've always owned Canon's (even in the old 35mm film days) and would never think of owning anything but a Canon...they are simply the best cameras out there. This SD1200IS is no exception. My old SD110 was built like a tank and has withstood a ton of use. The SD1200IS is about half the thickness of the SD110 but still has that solid, well built feel. The 2 1/2" LCD screen is such a vast improvement over the old 1 1/2" screen. I agree with some reviewers that the viewfinder is pretty much worthless....no one is going to look through the viewfinder...why even bother. The controls are fairly intuitive although I miss having a printed manual to have as quick reference for the many options offered...it's certainly not convenient to have to refer to the manual on your computer. The number of manual functions is extremely impressive and I have yet to experiment the all of them. The results in Auto mode are excellent for casual use but the manual settings do give you a tremendous amount of control over your final results. I have yet to print any 8"x10" or bigger prints but can see that the amount of detail in the photos will certainly hold up to enlargements. Canon's photo software is garbage....just download Picasa..you can't beat it for free!!! I've shot some videos with the SD1200IS and they aren't too bad...not HD but quite passable with decent sound. To think I paid $400 for my S110 8 1/2 years ago and only $149 for the SD1200IS. Wow!!!!
Customer Review: A FANTASTIC CAMERA Summary: 5 Stars
This is one great little camera.I carry a small sub compact camera with me everywhere I go and I needed an up-grade from my 6 year old fixed focus Argus. Before I purchased this Cannon SD1200 Elph I read all the reviews I could find and I just can't believe some of the negative reviews. Either these people got a LEMON (which I doubt) or they just don't know how to operate a really good camera. The one very special thing that I love is the "Date Stamp" feature. It makes it so great to be able to see on your photos when and what time the picture was taken.
The compactness of this camera is just perfect. No protrusions to snag as you retieve it from your pocket or case. I use a very inexpensive fabric belt case with a velcro flap. If only the owner would take a little time to read the manual or even take a camera class they would find that they could take excellent pictures. I take most of my pictures without the flash since falsh has a tendancy to wash out a lot of color. Most indoor shots can be taken quite successfuly by setting the camera to the "SCN" mode and turning off the flash. The "auto" mode is great too but just remember that it will automatically select the flash if its too dark and then if you are too far away from you subject the shot will turn out dark. The flash is ony good for short distances. I would not go farther than 6 feet.
This is one "solid" little camera. Built like a fine piece of equipment.
Just learn how to operate all the great features it has and you will be very, very happy with this camera
P.S. I purchased this camera from AMAZON. I am very pleased with the price and service they provide.
Customer Review: Solid Digital Elph camera, feather light and great for hiking Summary: 5 Stars
Great little camera for taking along on climbing or hiking trips. Weighs nothing and I can just keep it in a little pouch attached to my shoulder strap for easy access with one hand.
Battery life is very good, optical zoom works smoothly and pictures are stable without a tripod. Still getting used to not having direct control over things like focus, but just have to get used to how it thinks and use the manual controls to make it do what I want. (my first non-SLR)
Picture resolution is quite good, fast control over flash with it's dedicated button is really handy when you're in a hurry and need to ensure you don't get a flash when you don't want one.
I purchased mine as a refurbished model from GRL Recovery. If you already have the misc parts (battery-charger etc) that come with the camera body, it is a great way to save some cash.
The initial shipment of my camera was a problem as there were features that were broken when I turned on the camera. I sent the camera back and explained everything, and GLR Recovery was very responsive. Their supplier that does their refurbish work sent them a bad batch evidently. I had a pressing need for the camera with an upcoming family event, and they would have had difficulty getting me a replacement in time. So they simply sent me a brand new (not refurbished) camera of the same model and for my trouble refunded the full price I payed for the refurbished camera. The new camera came just in time and of course worked flawlessly and my family event was well covered. I was provided with excellent customer service and would purchase from them again.
