Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD630 6MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical ZoomCustomer Review: For The Price, A Stylish & Feature Filled Little Camera Summary: 5 Stars
This Canon SD 630 is my first digital still camera. I held out for a long time, did lots of research and for the price, I think this camera is just great. I've had it for 3 weeks and I've been having a lot of fun playing with it. The pictures are clear and sharp, the video is better than I expected and there are lots of shooting mode choices for different conditions. It's just important to try it out before any kind of important event to see what modes work best in what lighting and distance conditions.
Besides the auto mode, I especially like the digital macro mode. I haven't had any battery life problems, but I also haven't taken it away on a trip. I originally thought I would have a problem with the controls because it is so small, but after a couple of hours playing with it, I don't have any problems with them at all. I don't miss the viewfinder, though I know that might be a problem for some people. One of its many interesting features is one that allows you to tell if the focus is good of the shot you just took. I've found that helpful. Also, the Canon software is very user friendly. It not only allows you to download the pictures, but to do rudimentary edits with the video and add titles and transitions. It doesn't conflict with my Photoshop Elements and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I use it.
Finally, from a style point of view, the camera is really sleek and cute, and with the red Canon case I bought as an accessory, I'm the envy of all my friends when I whip it out. If you're an inexperienced photographer and have problems with camera shake, you might want to spend more for a higher model that has image stabilization and more sophisticated bells and whistles. But, if you what a nice all around point and shoot digital at a reasonable price, this is the camera for you.
Customer Review: Stop thinking and just buy it Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this camera due to reviews here and on CNET.
I love this thing, got a battery from ebay for $1 plus shipping. Search for 'sd630 battery' it works great. I also got a screen guard (invisble shield) from shieldzone for $15. My last camera was a 2MP Sony which fell in ocean with me.
The camera is very small and the LCD is so beautiful. Its a crowd pleaser everytime i pull it out. People see the screen and are just amazed.
speaking of size, it fits in pocket and buttons may be kind of weird for big fingers. The menus are easy for me, havent took many night shots just point and shoots. The fireworks mode works well though. Like others said, make sure you have the extra batter cause the low-batt signal just appears with no warning.
The one feature i didnt think i'd use but i love now is the video mode with sound. When you play back through camera you cant hear anything but one you download it it sounds fine, no hissing or low noise. The video looks very good, i took some video on a jamaican safari and it was great. I would suggest a 1gb or 2gb card though. My 1gb gives maybe 5min of high quality video, which is still enough for those short unexpected things. But even the medium level still looks great and gives much more time.
Camera is very easy to use, keep the manual though cause there are a lot of features that you may forget or overlook. Dont be tricked into those 8 or 10MP cameras cause if you're not printing posters then you're wasting money. Spend that money on a high-end 5 or 6MP camera that has more features than those upper pixels, remember the more pixels the bigger card you have to buy and the more hard drive space you take up.
Customer Review: Big impact yet so compact! Summary: 5 Stars
Pros: Picture quality is still good, Canon has not lost it's touch after ten years of making Elphs. The size is awesome, I can place it anywhere I'd like. With a three inch LCD, who needs a view finder - does anyone still use a view finder? It offers a lot of scene modes and they are not that difficult to get to, it just takes a little time to get used to the buttons. The 6.0 megapixel and 3x optical zoom and UA lens is all you need. This Elph now offers a new ISO 800, which reduces image blur and expands low-light shooting ability. It's camera solution CD-ROM software has improved a lot, so it's easier to download, edit, and view your pictures.
Cons: It's features are a bit basic but it offers just enough for those point and shot customers. So if you want a lot of manual features you might want to pay more for another camera. The LCD might get thumbprints very easily but I have one word for you: invisibleSHIELD. Amazons might sell one for this camera, if not, do a web search. It doesn't come with a case or bag; the manual is boring and just like all the others - you may need to buy a book if photography is a hobby for you. The Function/Set buttons might be too small, but I have small hands so I'm cool with their size.
Conclusion: The Canon PowerShot SD630 is an solid ultracompact camera, with performance and photo quality that more than make up for its few design flaws and it's price. It's a good shooter, and its feature set makes it quite flexible for a camera of its size. That said, it's basically a more expensive version of the PowerShot SD600 with a larger screen and no optical viewfinder.
Customer Review: 3" screen won us & family over . . . great on the eyes!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've used a Canon S40 since our son was born 5 yers ago . . . we use iPhoto / Mac OSX which is always great with Canon cameras . . . whatever you get, I think a minimum of 4 megapixels is a good rule of thumb . . . but, whoa, i think anything getting up to 10mp now is kinda overkill . . . eats up tons of storage -- and frankly, I'm not going out to print many photos anymore, let alone make some giant posters or anything . . . well, in short it was kind of a toss-up between the SD630 and all the other Powershot models.
However, we now have an SD630 as of this week -- it's the *one* model of Powershot/Elph that Canon makes that has the 3-inch screen . . . thought about it for months; read reviews of all kinds. It even does video -- amazing!! Holding my brother's 2.0megapixel Canon from 5 yrs ago this week, blew me away -- this camera is about 1/2 the size & weight of his camera, which I always admired for it's tiny size.
* Also, I can't believe you can get a 1 gb card for 20 bucks / we got a 2 gb card . . . incredible prices now! Major wow!
* Nice features: fassst response (old cameras have lots of lag-time reading shots to memory cards . . . no more!!) . . . video is great @ 30fps 640 x 480 (yes -- we'd decided on this little camera for *video* to experiment vs. getting a dv-camcorder first ) . . . 3" screen vs 2.5" on the SD600 (only 30 bucks less) is *awesome* . . . up-close "macro" shots on things from only inches away is really neat, too . . . battery is tiny, easily lasts a couple days of shooting-reviewing . . .
Just my 64-bits . . . :] JB
Customer Review: What are you waiting for....buy it! Summary: 5 Stars
If my title alone hasnt made you stop everything you are doing and buy this camera then I guess I should tell you alittle bit about it. First off I am not a die hard camera expert. With that being said I know a good picture when I see one. This camera takes amazing pictures outside ( just look at the examples people have put for you to see ) It also takes really good low light pictures as well. Normally when you zoom in to take a picure with other cameras it comes out blury, not with this one! It is not too big, not too small, just the right size. The menu is easy to navigate around in as well. The features are amazing, everything from "vivid" colors to color swap to color accent. I wont get into every single thing this camera has, ( just scroll up and you can read them if you want ) but trust me it has a lot of features.
Also I cant say enough about the movie mode. Honestly you dont really need a camcorder unless you are REALLY picky. The movie mode on this camera is great. You wont be able to take movies or take more than 5 pictures with the card that comes with the camera so it is a MUST that you upgrade to atleast a 2gb card. Long story short, this camera is worth every penny, and I would advise anyone thinking about buying this camera to do so.
Cons -
People will come up to you and ask you " Hey what kind of camera is that, the screen is so nice" Oh wait this is a pro because I actually like when this happens.
