Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Black)

Customer Review: VERY SURPRISED That the video capabilty sealed the deal!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased my SD780is on Amazon just before black Monday for $169 (that price only lasted 24 hours)! I looked at MANY different cameras before purchasing. I wanted something that took great pictures and was easy to use. This camera gave me both. This camera is super small and it slips into my jeans pocket easily so I carry it much more than any other camera I've ever had.

If you want to go full manual it's got that capacity but I've been shooting virtually all auto and I'm pleased with the results. The long shutter lag-time (the time it takes from when you push the shutter button till when the picture is actually taken) frustrated me on my old point-and-shoot but this camera's shutter lag is very short.

The interesting thing was the video aspect. I really had no desire to shoot video with any point-and-shoot that I was about to buy. I have a video camera and figured that I'd buy a new one sometime later. Then I noticed that the SD780is shoots video in HD where others in it's price range did not. I no longer shoot a lot of video but figured this camera might be able to do both. I'm very happy with the video I've shot and believe it's picture quality is superior to my actual video camera. No more of those little tapes either!

If you do intend to shoot much video buy at least an 8Gig SDHC memory card (better yet a 16Gig) and DON'T BUY IT ON eBAY. Lot's of angry buyers that ended up with 3Gig cards marked as 16Gig purchased from Chinese sellers.

Customer Review: Great portable camera... I wish i could give it 4.5 stars
Summary: 5 Stars

First, let me say that I am novice camera user. I have owned multiple point and shoot cameras and am currently expanding my knowledge and use into the intermediate level. That being said I love this camera however the pictures in low light are not as crisp as I would ideally like.

Why I love the Camera

- The camera is small enough that as a guy I can bring it with me to almost every occasion, as it easily fits in my jean pocket or coat pockets
- Despite its small size the camera takes amazing pictures, I use the camera for both personal, and quick professional landscaping photography
- The camera is relatively easy to use, it is a point and shoot camera
- The video quality is truly impressive for such a small camera
- For the size and price an extremely impressive camera

What I don't like

- As a small camera the SD780 has trouble with crisp images in low light... This proves especially problematic as I purchased the camera to take out to the bar and to take photos with friends which often happen at night

- The buttons are flush with the camera, and can be hard to find, especially at night..... Which is not terrible when I take pictures, however, often I ask a third party to take a picture of me with friends, and they often fumble even trying to button to take a photo.

Conclusion

My favorite small point and shoot camera despite its limitations.

Customer Review: Great camera for elderly parents.
Summary: 5 Stars

After getting this particular camera for my parents as a Christmas present, I could not regret getting this one bit. Certainly turned out to be the best bang for the buck I could find in an under-$200 point-and-shoot. My parents live on the Canon brand, and it shows in their love for this one. Of course, brand loyalty aside, this is their second PowerShot. They had one from about six or seven years ago, which was one which used a Compact Flash card, had no optical zoom, had only 3.1MP quality, and ran on AA batteries, and it was NOT very user-friendly. This camera really changed that big time. Definitely a great choice for senior citizens to get into digital photography with.

I wasn't about to look for a $1000 SLR with all these professional tools that they didn't know how to use, but didn't want such a cheap camera, that they'd complain after only a few times using it. This was right in the middle, it was not a cheap camera with lack of features, but it wasn't so profesional SLR that they wouldn't know how to use, either. This is a GREAT beginner's camera where you get features that you're going to use, and the simplicity that anyone from 8 to 108 can use. Picture quality is a blast, took a picture of our cat a couple of times, and printed out in full 8x11.5" with great quality. My family chooses Canon for a reason, I was this close to getting them a comparable Kodak EasyShare, but glad I ultimately chose this PowerShot instead for them.

Customer Review: Very Good "Stepping Stone" Camera...
Summary: 5 Stars

First, let me say that as I'm nowhere near being a professional photographer--hey, what can I say, I'm an audio guy--I hope this review may help someone like myself consider purchasing what I've found to be a very good camera. I couldn't be happier with the features, and the results I've gotten are stellar. I believe the Canon SD780IS truly may be a great stepping-stone for someone looking to move beyond the "fully automated" point-and-shoot variety to a cam that at least gives you a fair degree of manual control (if you wish) over how you choose to take a picture--from exposure to white balance and a few other tweaks. True DSLR's of course are not at all cheap, so this camera in my mind gets you most of the way there at what may be a fraction of the cost. That said, my one gripe is this is not a camera for someone with large hands! I do have a great deal of trouble at times pushing the tiny buttons--but eventually I do get there. Had I paid more attention to the dimensions, or had I had the chance to physically play around with this camera, I would not have purchased it. Down the road I do see myself taking the further step up to a DSLR for even more flexibility and manual control, but for folks who are looking for a "pocket camera" and for whom size doesn't matter... the Canon SD780IS may just be the perfect little package of features at a very reasonable price.

Customer Review: Amazingly good image quality from a "spy" camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Lumix LX-3 for creative photography. It is a superb camera, but it does not fit in a jeans pocket, so I decided to get a SD780 as it is absolutely tiny, much smaller than my cell phone or my wallet. And as the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you!

For its size, the SD780 takes excellent images. I use it on full automatic setting as a point and shoot, and while the image quality is not quite up to LX-3 standards, it is pretty amazing.

I recently was on Amelia Island and took a bicycle ride to the salt marsh. I slipped the SD780 in my pocket (I can take this camera everywhere and anywhere since it is so tiny) and ended up taking a photo of the salt marsh that was so good, I had it enlarged and framed and hung up on my wall. I am very, very picky about my photography and I never thought I would frame and hang an image taken from such a tiny camera. The folks at the camera store could not believe this image came from the SD780. So it has the capability of taking amazingly good images.

Battery life is exceptional, much better than my LX-3. I've had the SD780 for a year now, and the only issue is it sometimes makes some odd noises, but I am thinking this is related to the battery getting low. At least I hope that is the reason!
