Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Black)Customer Review: Amazon customer service = A+ Summary: 5 Stars
I write this not really to review the canon camera, but rather to talk about my amazon experience. I purchased the canon 780is for my wife for Christmas. She loved it. I thought it looked great, and took remarkable pictures especially in comparison with my 7 year old 4 mega pixel canon A520. After Christmas we took a trip to Coronado, CA and we were taking pictures while on a bike ride around the island. At one point the camera was dropped, while on and with the lens out. The camera landed right on the lens and jammed it in a way that it would not go back into the camera body, making the camera inoperable.
I emailed amazon when we got home and told them exactly how the camera was dropped and is now inoperable. To my surprise and excitement, amazon emailed back in about 45 minutes to say that they had placed an order for the exact same camera to replace my broken model. Just like that. Pretty amazing customer service policy if you asked me. My new camera has arrived and my old damaged camera is being sent back to amazon.
Customer service like this is what builds great companies. I will be visiting amazon for all of my online product shopping from this point on. Thanks amazon. I'm spreading the word.
Customer Review: This camera rocks... Summary: 5 Stars
For fine still photography, I'm a Nikon man. For video or pocket cameras, I love Canon. Though my venerable Canon Powershot SD-450IS still works perfectly, it's just 5 megapixel and the 4 year old battery had worn out. As I searched for a replacement battery, I also found reviews and videos on this Canon Powershot SD-780IS.
Turns out, this camera has all the great features and easy of use of my older camera, even better construction quality and shot brilliant 12 megapixel and 720p HD Video. It has better Image Stabilization (IS), beautiful color reproduction and a high quality feel. It won't replace an HD Camcorder, but for the money and size, it can't be beat. My only complain with the Powershot series is that none of these cameras will allow you to save images in their raw format, saving in processed jpeg format. But te average shooter won't be doing extensive image processing, and the image quality is high enough that you still have no problem getting 11x14 (or larger!) paper prints if desired from good quality images. If you're looking for a full-featured, shirt pocket camera that shoots great video with excellent low light capability, the SD-780IS answer! I recommend it, even over the newer SD-940IS.
Customer Review: Excellent! Might replace SLR Summary: 5 Stars
First - note on bias. I have used only Canon digital compact/SLR cameras. I think Canon makes great products in general.
This is my first 12 megapixel compact camera. Compared with previously owned 3 megapixel Canon compact, I had 3 years ago (sorry can't remember model, but it used 4 AA batteries), this is so much better.
+ Light, compact, perfect for travel;
+ Battery last forever;
+ Image quality is often very comparable to Canon Rebel XTi;
+ HD video in a pocket format is one of the best features;
- Digital zoom is totally useless unless you zoom only one point over optical;
- Low light gives grainy and bad quality pictures, image stabilizer really doesn't help in such circumstances.
- flash turns on in Program mode after restart, even after turning it off.
Note about memory cards. There is a lot of confusion and hype about speed and compatibility.
I personally tested it with the following- Lexar SDHC 8GB class4 premium 60x; PNY 1GB SD; Transcend 2GB miniSD trough miniSD adapter. Video and picture taking works on all of them. While small cards fills very fast it does not affect video or photo quality and recording in any way.
Customer Review: Great Camera! Summary: 5 Stars
Our last digital camera was seven years old and stopped working. We normally don't take that many pictures but there were a few times that my wife wished she had one and when I needed one for work, it was time to start looking. My cousin has the ELPH 1200 10 MP and I noticed it took great pictures. After reading reviews and checking out consumer reports we went with the Canon 780 12 MP. At first my wife thought it was too small when she took it out of the box. However, after charging the battery and using it, she can't put it down.
It is so simple to use and so conveniently small, we almost always have it with us. We have been taking pictures for weeks, even on vacation, and only recently have we had to charge the battery for the first time. The battery lasts a very long time.
I don't have too many technical aspects to report on, I'm not that camera savvy. I do have to tell that I needed to upload pictures to a site but they were too large. The manual has easy instructions on how to reduce the size of the megapixels and that solved the problem after taking new pictures. For an easy to use, everyday camera that you can take anywhere, I would definitely recommend the ELPH SD780
Customer Review: love at first shot Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love this camera! And when I first opened it was expecting the usual canon elph size but its even slimmer and is a perfect pocket camera. The black matte finish looks great. I have always been a fan of the quality of pictures that canons produce and this was no exception. I have used sony's cybershot, fuji slim camera, nikon cool pix and others and this by far gives the superior shot every time. the picture always looks so clear and amazing unlike some other small digitals that give a little grainy look. It has great features for photo taking and special effects. It has the usual color changing modes to black and white or sepia but it also has some cool features tha will pick up just one color and do the rest in black and white. The HDMI is a great plus and HD video. Overall I really have to say that this camera is the most user friendly out of other camera's out there. Its easy to hook up to any computer and uses and sd memory card so you dont have to get any converters like with the sony. The picture just comes out great with no effort at all. I definitely would recommend this camera to everyone and have since recommended it to my mother and a coworker- both of them love it!
