Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Customer Review: South Africa never looked so good
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife was so happy with her Canon 720, that she urged me to get a Canon digital for our April 2008 trip to a safari park in South Africa and a week in Cape Town. My son had just purchased a Canon SD870IS for the same trip because it has a 28 mm wide angle. So I purchased one also from Amazon.

The camera is fantastic. I discovered the SD870IS can take video and you can stitch still photos together to create panoramics.

I took several hundred closeup photos of animals. The 3.8 zoom lens, with night photo feature, captured the faces and yellow eyes of the 2 lionesses and the lion that crept bye about 3 feet from our open Land Rover as they were sneaking up on a herd of Impala deer. Also the exasperated look on the face of a sleepy mother leopard being pestered for attention by her cub.

However, at the end of the 2 week vcation trip, the lens retracted and extended more and more slowly when I turned off/on the camera. A fully charged battery did not correct the problem and the lens failed to function at the end when I tried to take the final two (unimportant) photos. (My son's Canon SD870IS worked/is still working perfectly).

I contacted Amazon Customer Service when I returned home. Since I had only had the camera 3 weeks Amazon immediately rushed me a replacement SD870IS.

The image stabilization was huge help as our land rover plowed through bush and gullies following elephants, Cape Buffalos, Rhinos. hippos

I found I could hold the camera (and my Panasonic CamCorder) more stable in my right hand if I grasped my right wrist with my left hand and kept both arms braced against my chest.

I am very happy with Canon, the Canon SD870IS [...].

Customer Review: PowerShot SD870IS use in bright outdoor conditions
Summary: 5 Stars

There have been many reviews of this product. I want to report on the use of this camera which does not have a viewfinder in bright light. I had been using a 4 year old weatherproof camera with viewfinder and about a 1.5 inch screen. (Olympus Stylus 400) It' screen is not visible at all in bright light. I used it mostly while hiking and backpacking, so there is often bright sun and the viewfinder is essential. I was determined to find a camera with a viewfinder and large display and a wider angle lens. The weather proof aspect was not as important as I have always managed to keep the camera dry stored in double zip lock bags, in the worst conditions. After weeks of research, I became discouraged and started thinking about settling for a model without a viewfinder. I read a review of this camera by a snowboarder who did not mention screen visibility in the sun, which I took as a good sign. Other research had indicated that the newer models had much improved screens for bright light use. I have had the camera for about a month and used it for about a week around Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley in bright sun/snowy conditions. The SD870IS display is bright enough that you can easily frame a picture under any lighting conditions. Holding the Disp button down for a few seconds temporarily kicks the brightness up to full, but I have not found the need to use it. The large screen also makes menus easy to use as well. Another important feature of this camera for outdoor scenery is it's wide angle lens (28 mm equivalent as compared to 35 mm for many cameras). The size and weight are also important features for backpacking. I have also been pleased with the sharpness, exposure and color.

Customer Review: Great Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I received my new camera and the 2 spare batteries today-way before the estimated delivery date. The Canon battery charged very quickly-less than 1 1/2 hours. I was able to set everything up without even lookng at the instructions. My 3 main reasons for buying this camera were: excellent movie quality (and to my surprise it is VERY easy to shift from still to video mode), a zoom of more than 3, and a wide angle lens. My only concern was that other reviewers said the zoom did not function in the video mode. Well, they are wrong. It works! The test shots and videos look fantastic.

This camera is replacing a Casio that is just 1 1/2 years old. It still takes good pictures, but the internal battery that retains the date, time, etc is dead. Casio service wants $110 just to look at it. I said that is ridiculous for a camera that only cost several hundred dollars. The Casio is more megapixels (10 vs 8), but that was overkill. Unless you want to crop a small area and blow it way up, you dont need that many megapixels.

The only downsides to this camera that I have found so far are that there are less shooting modes than the Casio had (most of which were not necessary) and switching to sound recording requires several steps. But overall, these are small sacrafices to make for the quality and reputation of another Canon (my second digital camera was a Canon that lasted for many years, and my SLR that I used professionally and still own is a classic Canon AE1-P). I am proud to be back with Canon again!

Customer Review: Exceeded expectations, great value.
Summary: 5 Stars

Great camera. I prefer to use the image stabilizer and High ISO mode and no flash. I've been able to take some FANTASTIC indoor shots that capture the mood of the environment far better than the flash-heavy, sterile-looking images that all point and shoot cameras seem to take when in automatic mode with the flash turned on.

These shots are better than the ones I'd be able to take by hand holding my Digital Rebel XTI -- no I have not yet taken the plunge and purchased an image stabilizing lens for it.

I also love the wide angle lens, even the small bit of spherical aberration that shows along the edges of the images when fully zoomed out.

Pros:
- Image Stabilization will change the kind of shots you attempt with such a small camera -- it's like having a tripod on hand at all times.
- Minimal shutter lag
- Good looking images
- Much easier to use (compared with recent predecessor models I've played with)
- Great battery life even with image stabilization on.

Cons:
- High ISO mode is a bit grainy
- Camera should charge when plugged into USB -- it does not.
- I wish it had a fill flash mode -- if it does I can't find it.
- I wish it had RAW mode -- I have come to appreciate the superiority of this mode thanks to the Digital Rebel XTi -- wow.

Bottom line: I bring this camera everywhere. You will too.

Customer Review: Canon's best ELPH yet !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This camera replaced my trusty SD450. I loved the SD450, but I wanted to upgrade to something with image stabilization. To put it simply, the SD870 totally rocks! The 3" screen is beautiful to behold. It's even viewable outside with bright sunlight shining directly on it. And the pictures this thing takes are absolutely gorgeous! They are sharp as a tack, and the colors are spot on. I have to say, the image stabilization really makes a big difference, particularly when you are shooting in low light. I also like the new, wide-angle lens. It really comes in handy when taking group shots or shooting in close quarters.

The only negative I can come up with is the lack of an optical viewfinder. I guess this is a sacrifice you have to make in order to get a screen this big on such a small camera.

Pros:

Sharp photos with great color saturation
Optical image stabilization
Speedy shot-to-shot time for an ultra-compact
Bright 3" screen that's easy to view in all lighting situations
Great movie mode
28mm - 105mm (35mm equiv.) 3.8x wide-angle zoom lens
Easy to use controls with intuitive GUI

Cons:

No optical viewfinder

Overall, I think the SD870 is just about perfect in every way, and I highly recommend it!
