Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)

Customer Review: Great camera!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having previously owned the Sony T-70 I bought the T-200 late last year and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the pictures. By no means do I consider myself a professional photographer, but I do appreciate crip and good quality pics. I had always dismissed the cannon cameras and was about to buy the T-300 until I did more research and started reading the great reviews on the Cannon Powershots, 1100 IS and SD 870 IS. When online I had preferred the smaller 1100 IS so was about to purchase it on Amazon (off course) but decided to test them at a store first. When I saw both side by side I was impressed by the superior quality of the 870 IS. The wider angle does make a difference and being a guy I thought the 870 had a better look (sexy camera). I have taken my camera everywhere and have rarely had to delete a pic once I upload them to my computer. It would be great if there could be a mode to have the flash on... believe only has auto flash and off. but that is my only complaint. Best digital camera I have ever owned.

Customer Review: amazing little camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I kept missing photos because I didn't have my DSLR camera with me and bought this after a bit of research. I was seriously concerned about the lack of viewfinder but once I actually started shooting I realized it was unnecessary with the bright, large LCD. This camera is feature rich and exceptionally easy to use. The LCD screen is exceptional. With this camera you can just point and shoot to get good pictures; you can also read the manual and learn to use the many features. 5 stars. I would also recommend the A570IS if you only want to use full automatic. Half the price and a very good camera.

Update---5-10-08 After a couple of months with this camera I am even more impressed. The face detection works quite well but more important is the fact that I have used this everywhere from a dark restaurant at night to mid-day and am very happy with the photos taken. I have blown up several to 8 x 10 and 11x14 and still look great. I bought a Lowepro to keep it in and carry it everywhere. 5 stars indeed.

Customer Review: 3rd Canon Point and Shoot
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my wife a SD800IS and was looking for another one for one of the kids. I ended up, over time (6 months) picking up 2 more. The 870 replaced the 800 so I now have 2 870's and 1 800. Biggest thing I like about this camera is that it has a wider angle than any of the other ones. Mostly, the wife and kids shoot indoors or in a close setting. The wider angle allows for them to get more into the picture. They take great pictures and if/when we really need a good shot I have a Canon Digital SLR I use. So, it really works out great. They all have loved them, they're fairly easy to operate and if you want to get a bit more advanced, they also have that capability. Obviously, as I now have 3, I'd recommend them to anyone. In a close, say under 50', setting, you really can't tell the difference between their pictures shot with a $250.00+ camera or mine with $3500 between the camera and lense. If you're not planning on blowing them up past about an 8x10 you won't be able to tell the difference. Good luck!!

Customer Review: Canon PowerShot SD870IS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my third Canon camera. I was very pleased with my previous Canon digital camera, a PowerShot 610, and wanted to upgrade to a smaller camera with more megapixels. The SD870IS met that criteria while giving me the same menus and functions common to the Canon cameras so there was next to no learning curve. It allows picture taking to be as simple as pressing the button or choosing customized presets for different shooting variables. I was very happy with the picture quality with the 610 and the 870 is even better. The only complaint I have is with Canon's software. In a nutshell, it stinks. I had a problem installing the previous version of ZoomBrowser which required many emails with Canon's Tech Support and much time installing, uninstalling, editing the registry and numerous other tweaks to get it to run. Now I have a whole new set of problems when I tried to install the new version. So my review is: Camera=great; Software=horrible.

Customer Review: Best wide angle point and shoot
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a loyal nikon customer for years. I have gone through 3 other nikons, always upgrading. when I first picked up this camera the quality of the product and it's images blew past that of every camera on display.
1. the wide angle lens allows you to increase those group shots from four or five to 8 or 9 w/o needing to back up ten feet.
2. once you begin to play around and figure out all of the settings/iso modes etc....you can really push this camera to the limits. I have become a huge fan of the color isolation feature.
3. when zooming, even in the optical, the pixilation and shadowing is far better than that of other cameras on the market. I compared this with two nikons, panasonic, and a sony. None had such a clear screen to view, nor the features.
this camera may not be an slr, but for the price, features, and appeal it has when i pull it out....i will always be a canon guy now!
