After years of lugging around a 2.2 lb Sony F828, I decided that size really does matter. So many times I wished I had my camera, but who wants to haul a huge camera bag everywhere they go? I now have a camera that fits in my purse and I'm taking pictures almost every single day.
I love it! I thought I would be giving up quality, but in many cases the Canon SD870 is better than my Sony (I ran several "side-by-side" tests). It produces excellent color and lighting. It has enough "manual" settings to be able to usually be able to make adjustments as needed. It's very easy to use.
Downsides - the flash is very weak and I needed to buy the corresponding slave flash (HF-DC1). However, the slave flash is so small and light that it fits right into my purse as well. Red eye reduction is very poor, even with the red-eye setting on and the slave flash increases the problem.

I bought the camera two month ago and I can say it is the best camera I have ever had..!! I use to have a Sony with 8 MB that was much more expensive with much less options..!! This canon has all what you will expect from a professional camera. The screen is beautiful and big that you will really love. Pictures are bright and very nice, even videos are wonderful.!!!
Don't you ever think that saving money with other brands will make you happy, coz you will not buy a camera every week.!! You will need a good camera that will last a while, and I am confident that this camera will last with me for a long time..!!
I will definitely recommend this camera to friends and family..!!

I've had 3 canon cameras now.
My SD450 which my girlfriend has takes great pictures as well, but it's night and day when you get your hands on this beauty.
First off, that 3 in. LCD screen is just incredible. You can see everything in great detail with it's screen size.
And the pictures are sweet as well.
You have like 12 different preset scene modes for night, beach, foliage, pets & kids, etc. etc... you can't blow the picture for the life of you.
I'm still learning everything, but it's easy to navigate with the scroll wheel, like on an mp3 player....
Look, Buy it and you won't regret ever reading this review.....
I only buy canon digital cameras, because their simply the best looking and best software package , and of course the images are stunningly clear!

From my experience the sd870 takes great pics in almost all situations. It performs well with the Sandisk Extreme III 8gb card that I purchased with it. The thumb scroll feature has some "cool" factor to it, but I found it a little "finicky" and choose to turn that feature off and access the menu manually which is equally easy. This camera is fairly compact and light, battery life is better than a lot of its peers. It has all the manual adjustments that I prefer, which aren't alot. I use the white balance adjustment sometimes for sun/snow shots. The only things that I would change are the following:
1. Metal housing is easily scratched
2. I would prefer waterproof/dustproof
All in all, I really like this camera and have no regrets after owning it for a year.

First of all, nothing beats that clear, bright, vibriant colored 3" LCD screen. I've been a loyal customer of Canon cameras. I bought this after seeing how fun my dad's 850IS was.
I've had this camera for almost 2 years now. Dropped it twice on hard floors over 3-feet height. The camera is still alive and kicking.
I take pictures of everything (switched from copying to picturing). My fav function on this camera is color accents and micro mode.
There is a matching Canon under-water housing for this camera if you are an outdoor person.
The only drawback for me is the chuncky body compared to the 850. But that's not enough to make me take 1/2 of the star off.
