Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)Customer Review: Great P&S Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a pretty avid amateur photographer who uses a DSLR, but I bought this camera for my wife, who honestly, is more likely to bring a camera to a social gathering than I am.
As point-and-shoots go, I like this camera. 8MP is nice. It's not absurdly high like some other models, and so the noise performance of this camera is still pretty good. It takes reasonably noise free shots at 400ISO. Oh, and it's fantastically small -- about the size of a pack of cigarettes.
The lens is also pretty decent quality, going a bit wider than you'll find on most P&S cameras. I think this is an important feature for people who are taking pics in close quarters.
Battery life seems admirable. My wife can use the camera on several occasions before the battery needs to be recharged.
I personally find the menu system of the camera a little obtuse. It's just not clear what functions will be under what menu, and they seem to change based on the mode. In some modes there is more control than others. (In no mode is there full control of shutter and aperture, though you do have access to exposure compensation).
A final minor complaint is that there is this control wheel thingy that is a circle that you can click on the top, bottom, left, and right of to activate functions. However, you can also use the circle like a wheel, spinning your finger clockwise and counterclockwise to access functions. My experience is that this just doesn't work very well. The menu options scroll by in a rather squirrely manner, sometimes working, sometimes selecting, etc. It's a little weird. I'll give that it could be the size of my finger, but still -- annoying.
Customer Review: Better than anticipated Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, let me start out by saying that I did not plan on getting a new digi-cam this year.
My last camera a Sony DSC-T50, was lost. We looked for weeks, and after we failed to find it, I did some research and purchased the SD870 IS. Murphy's Law in full effect, the day after we got the Canon, we found the Sony. Now to return the Canon, I would have took a hit on a restocking fee. So we did some tests.
We always thought the T50 took great shots, and was fast and easy to use. Well...we were blown away with just how much better the SD870 IS works. Pictures came out more detailed, with more accurate color.
One top-notch feature that I feel is far understated is the red-eye correction. The camera uses the face recognition to see faces, and remove the red when you shoot. Should it miss, you can post-process the image in the camera and remove it after. It works very well, and the camera doesn't do the annoying 4-5 flash trick. (I always hate that)
Ok, enough yapping, here's the real meat:
Pros:
Image quality is simply Amazing
The Wide Angle Lens helps out greatly
The 3" screen
The Image stabilization works very well (I tend to move alot)
The face recognition works fast and easy
RED-EYE CORRECTION
Solid Build
Cons:
No Optical Viewfinder (ABSOLUTELY no loss to me, the lest 3 digi-cams I owned had no optical viewfinder)
Overall:
I couldn't be happier. We sold the Sony, kept the Canon. We took a loss on the Sony, becuase it was only a year old, but gained far more. BUT...the main point of a camera is the pictures it takes, and this one is top notch.
Customer Review: KISS - Keep it simple, stupid! Summary: 5 Stars
I own a Canon Powershot S1 IS (bought at the time that was launched) and have stuck to that loyal Digicam thus far. I loved the camera, but I had a few complaints with it - it had a tiny LCD display, had a pretty high response time, and was not really the most compact of cameras around.
I finally decided that it was time to buy a newer camera but this time I wanted one that was compact and easy to work with - a Point-and-Shoot camera as it is called. I did a lot of research online and selected the Canon Powershot SD870 IS. All reviews about it seemed positive and it seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
It has been a few months since I bought it and here I am to report its performance - Outstanding!! The shoot response time between one photo and another is really quick and the camera itself turns on within a second making all the surprise photos possible - like the ones I had to take at the National Park a couple of weeks ago when Deers and Elephants crossed our path. The camera is compact and is very easy to hold in your hand and to carry. I absolutely love the 3 inch display screen and don't miss the Optical viewfinder at all - honestly, I have no need for it.
All in all, this is a great camera for those who are looking for a simple camera to take all those photos of family outings, dinners and forays into the wild.
I bought this camera in the US, if you want to buy one in India, you can head straight for the ones on discount at Shetala Cameras or at Canon X'perience, which is Canon's original store. Check out www.DiscountsVu.com for more offers on Canon cameras.
Customer Review: I love this camera! Summary: 5 Stars
After owning this camera, I will never go back to a camera that does not have a wide angle lens. I seriously had been looking for a camera like this for as long as I can remember. I love taking panoramic shots of historic buildings or natural scenery, and I could never fit everything into my pictures. You will be amazed at how much you can fit into one picture, even when standing close up to your subject.
The picture quality is great for a pocket camera and I love the special features it has (like making everything black and white except for one color). Everyone always envies my camera, and I think it is far superior to almost all other pocket digital cameras that I have seen including many of Canon's newer models that I have seen.
One of my biggest complaints with other digital cameras is the amount of blurry pictures that you discover when loading them onto your computer. So far I have had no blurry surprises, thanks to the camera stabilizer feature... also the LCD is so big and bright that you have a really good idea of what the picture will look like when blown up. And you can even view pictures on the LCD in direct sunlight with quite a lot of clarity.
One more word of praise, you can turn on the camera and take a picture so incredibly fast that you will never have to worry about missing a "Kodak moment" again. Battery life is great, and picture reload time is also fast.
Alright I'm searching for cons: I wish that there were more picture modes though... like there is no nature or sunset mode.
Bottom line, buy this camera now!
Customer Review: A sure winner!! Summary: 5 Stars
The cannon SD870IS has everything you would want in a camera in that category- trust me- I have been researching them for more than 6 months before I finally decided to buy the SD870. I just love it!! I got it a couple of weeks back and got a chance to use them extensively over the last weekend at a family party. Most people had canon SD cameras!! And I got a chance to compare mine with others including SD700, 750, 800, 900, 1100 among others. I must say the SD870 beats them all hands down!! The best thing about it is the wide angle lens( SD800 also has it). I could easily fit in 6 people in a frame when other camera would fit only 4 from the same distance. The image stabilization is 99.99% effective too!And its unique 3 inch LCD screen and the black panel on the back looks so cool!! Believe me when i say that you can see images on the screen even in very bright sunlight making the view finder irrelevant! Hardly anybody uses the viewfinder anyway!
Another cool feature is the self time- comes with 3 options including a custom setting where you can set it to click up to 10 times at one one go!! That could be very useful when you have to take pictures of a large groups.
Many other features are common to most canon SD series. Auto ISO is effective but not perfect. Exposures in the the dark may be not very good if it's anywhere more than 5 feet away. Also the LCD screen shows lot of grains in insufficient light conditions.
But in spite of its ignorable shortcomings the camera is a good investment. go for it!!
