Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Customer Review: Love the Canon PowerShot SD870IS
Summary: 5 Stars

I really love this camera. I have a G5, but this is much more fun and easy to use. It's small enough to fit in my purse, does almost all the things the big camera does and is really attractive too. It has a lot of functions and getting to them is very easy. I really love the large lcd.
The battery has lasted a very long time on a single charge and I really like the fact I can use the huge sdhs cards in it. One 8gb card holds all I'll need for the complete vacation, including videos I may take as well.

I set the camera on "kids and pets." I caught my Bassett Hound running toward me and it caught a perfect shot of her when her long ears had bounced up making it look like she was flying. Really a perfect shot and clear as if she were still and posing!

I haven't used the camera much in darker environments, but what I have has been pretty good for a camera of this price.

In videoing with the full long distance, I find some thing are a little fuzzy. But the regular video is pretty good for a compact camera. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.

I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a great camera for vacation, kids and pets and about anything else you would want to capture. I LOVE this camera!Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Customer Review: Great point and shoot camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this camera for Christmas and love it!

At first I was skeptical about the lack of an optical view finder. But the large LCD makes up for it.

The best feature of this camera that you'll see is the wide-angle zoom. The wide-angle format is especially applicable for landscape shots. For traditional photos, you can select a traditional aspect ratio.

The best feature that you won't notice until later is the optical image stabilization. I don't have the steadiest hands and with my past camera I had to throw out almost half of my pictures because they were blurry from the 'shake'. I've taken over 200 pictures so far and have not had to get rid of one because of the 'shakes'.

Things I don't like:
1) With all small cameras, there is the problem of dust spots appearing in the photo when using the flash. At first I wasn't sure what was wrong and wanted to return the camera, but I did a little research on Google. I found a page on both Fuji's and Canon's web sites explaining the issue and techniques on how to reduce.
2) This camera supports up to 1600 ISO. I found that taking outdoor night pictures at a higher ISO make for better photographs. I tried taking a picture at 1600 ISO and was disappointed by the amount of noise in the picture. I reduced to 800 ISO and turned off the flash and the result was much better. Just a minor peeve but worth noting.

Overall I'd highly recommend this camera.

Customer Review: Good little camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I will leave picture quality reviews to the dedicated review websites and those that have the opportunity to compare many cameras side by side. I purchased this camera to replace a 4 year old kodak and after a weeklong camping vacation I will say this is a great little camera. Compact and wide angle are the key features and well worth it. Expansive vistas and tight canyon views just cannot be done this easily with a normal lens. Slight bending at the edges with the lens at its shortest length but acceptable. Small size and quick startup makes it easiy to palm during activities. I would now never choose smaller than a 4GB SDHC card - allows lots of photos and movies, quick too. But don't forget this camera is delicate and needs care. A silicone cover may make holding it a bit more secure. A small Gorilla Pod made this great fun for self portraits. The face detect seems pretty good and selection of scenes will take time to learn ... or not. AF doesn't always choose the correct object but not horrible. IS is probably critical on a camera this size but transparent in operation.
Overall: great sub compact camera for backbacking photos in wide open spaces and narrow slot canyons. Pair with small Gorilla pod, a 12V car battery charger and you have a super fun and versatile iMovie machine - if not a bit delicate.

Sept 2009 update. Love this camera. Love the wide angle

Customer Review: SD 870 in comparison to the SD 850
Summary: 5 Stars

This review is in comparison to the SD850 I just returned. The SD870 is definitely the focus group evolution of the SD850 (Canon listened to its customers' complaints). The SD870 on/off button is on top and much easier to access. There is now a dedicated "review button" (no longer do you need to click the wheel back and forth to proof your shot). The size and thickness of the cameras are essentially the same, but the SD870 is considerably lighter. The 28mm lens gives the SD870 a wider shot, but it does have more of the "barrelling effect," but still ever so slight. The viewscreen is much larger than the SD850 and does very well in direct sunlight. I am not too particularly concerned with not having a viewfinder in that the SD850 viewfinder is almost cosmetic in nature (no crosshairs, no borders, not accurate). I prefer using a viewfinder on SLRs, but on compacts I question the usefulness of them. The start time for the SD870 is a split second faster than the SD850. All the camera effects that the SD850 has, including facial recognition and color accent are all available in the SD870. These subtle improvements may not be enough to convince you to dish out a little extra for the SD870, but the bigger screen size, wider lens, and lighter weight were the reasons why I made the switch. I hope this helps in your decision.

Customer Review: perfect little camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I updated to this camera from an older Digital Elph SD110, and this camera fixed a lot of the little things that were annoying with that camera. The buttons were moved around to make them easier to use, and the screen has icons that pop up to easily let you change options without worrying if you are pushing the right buttons. Also, the face recognition and focusing software works great. I always like the Elph because it is rugged and compact so that I can carry it in my pocket. I find that it lasts better than other cameras, and especially having the rechargeable battery pack rather than AA's somehow makes it tougher. The battery will last for probably about 500 pictures, which is plenty for most purposes. I took my old Elph on a long camping trip, and it was the only camera that didn't malfunction at least once (of about 15 cameras total) even though it took a lot of wear and tear.
One downside of this camera are that it doesn't photograph well in low light. On my old one, the cover for the compartment on the bottom for the memory card and battery loosened so that it was hard to keep it closed (which needs to be closed in order for the camera to function), and I notice that this camera has the same cover, but that is something that will only get worse as the camera gets older. Also, definitely buy
