Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SD870IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Customer Review: Easily the best of the lot
Summary: 5 Stars

I extensively researched, tested and compared the Sony T200/70, Canon SD800, and SD870. While the Sony T200/70s are sleeker, more stylish, and have touchscreen displays, they suffer from poor picture quality and LCD screens - grainy/noisy pics, and slightly pixelated LCD, especially the T200.

The SD800/870s take much superior pics with a high-quality LCD display. The wide-angle lens rocks big-time - almost 33% more detail in shots. The main difference between the SD800 and 870 is that the 870 has a 3 inch LCD (800 has a 2.5 inch LCD, with the optical viewfinder) and no optical viewfinder. The bigger screen is worth the extra bucks, in my opinion - but if you wanna save some $, then the 800 does everything else the 870 can.

The SD870 almost delivers on everything - great wide angle lens, great quality pics, LCD screen visible even in bright sunlight, easy to use and pocket.

On the downside, the body build is not very solid, due to use of plastic parts, it has no HD video mode (only VGA), and there is no zoom in video mode.

It still gets 5 stars, because it comes way ahead of its competition. Easily the best in its category.

Customer Review: Excellent camera withvalue and quality
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros

Excellent pictures and and the large LCD screen is crystal clear. load up time is significantly faster than the popular Sony cameras. It's a point and shoot, not load and wait then shoot. The cannon was fast in starting up and was able to point and shoot a picture within 2 seconds. A lot of useful features and some not so useful like the color replacements and enhancements but that might be good for the creative shooter. I normally shoot with a digital SLR and picked this one up for my wife. Actually, I have been using this camera because it was fast and easy while quickly producing excellent results! The printer I am using is the new Epson DASH printer because it produces excellent results and can easily print right formt eh camera using PictBridge.

Cons

Easy to get fingers in the way of the flash and the zoom button may take some while to get used to due to location. Produces a quite a bit of Red-Eye so be forewarned. I was surprised the flash is not a TTL (through the lens) as the flash can saturate pictures especially indoor shots. Would have been nice if the flash could have rotated upward to the ceiling.

Customer Review: JUST RIGHT
Summary: 5 Stars

i did a major amount of research looking for the perfect point and shoot camera. quality of the picture was not the only consideration. i wanted small size, big bright screen, ease of use, reputation, weight, camera appearance, mac compatible, speed, shutter lag, and endless other concerns i can't even remember. i read reviews, checked sites, read peoples posts [ like this one ] and went to stores. i bought and returned cameras because they didn't measure up to the scrutiny. [ sorry, i am not going to name names ]. i , in fact, drove myself nuts. sound familiar? i bet alot of you are going through the same thing. well, look no further, because this one is just right. really, although it is a little too big and too heavy, nothing is perfect, and it is worth that trade off. the weight gives it a very solid feel, and the size enables the 3" screen i want. this camera is great, and, yes, i am happy. the amazon price was great, and the service, as usual was stellar. i got a 2 gig card, and all is well. if you take the plunge, you will take great pictures. it's about the photographer, not the camera, but this one will help you tremendously.

Customer Review: Yeah baby! That's what I'm talking about!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this camera. I use to have a Nikon Coolpix 8700 which worked great for set up shots, but it was so complex and slow for point-and-shoot and also very bulky, I hated to carry it around. Canon, specifically this camera, really got it right with this camera. Honestly it's like having the best of both worlds. You can use the Manual function to lighten or darken a picture (change the ISO, etc) with such ease, or use the AUTO for quick point-and-shoot, or even use the set up functions like Portrait, Beach, Outdoors, etc. And even with the set up function it is easy to manipulate and change the settings.

Unlike the Nikon, all my pictures with the Canon turn out GREAT. There is no lag at all. I also love the video function and use it often. People have been complaining about not having a viewfinder but honestly, who the hell cares?

I strongly recommend this camera for amateurs, consumers, professionals, etc. This is a keeper, I bring it everywhere with me and have never been disappointed in the pictures nor the developed prints. I am definitely going to continue buying Canon products.

Customer Review: Nice compact!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this camera based mostly on the great reviews and I'm not dissapointed. I've been using a Minolta A2 for several years but wanted a compact to carry around with me more often. I feel the picture quality on automatic is at least as good as my A2 and probably even better. I'm also very happy with the video quality (using extremeIII card). I took a vid of a dog running along the road next to me and was surpised not only at the quality, but how well the stabilization worked.

I got a Lowepro Apex 20AW case for it and it seems perfect for this size camera. It has some neat features like a built-in rain hood and a belt loop that doesn't require taking off your belt. It's easily big enough to have an extra memory card, battery and usb or video cable, but it would probably be a stretch to stuff the battery charger in. It's also padded well and seems to keep dust out very well.

Update: A year and half later i'm still very happy with this camera. Battery life is more than enough for me. I've taken up to 400 pics and 1/2 hour of video on a charge.
