Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch Articulating LCD

Customer Review: Canon PowerShot SX20IS
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned this camera for two months and made some test photos to get to know it. The image quality is excelent and the zoom range is impressive. I like the configuration of the controls. I hope the control lableing doesn't wear off and leave me guessing what button does what (my Fiji Finepics S5700 lost its button IDs in the first year). Power by "AA" batteries is a requirement for me because I standardize on rechargeble "AA"s for all my electronics that I travel and hike with. I expect to use the articulated LCD view screen for those overhead and waist level shots that were so frustrating with my Fuji. I have seen the benifit of the image stabilizing with just the few test photos I've done so far. The SX20IS is heavy compared to my fuji Which is a plus for holding it steady but a negative for packing light. Also the grip for the right hand is a little slipery which with the extra weight makes those necesary one handed shots harder to control. I am frustrated with having to go on line for the users manual. I don't always have access to internet or a computer and if I print it on my printer it is a big package. I think Canon could print the manual on thin paper in a compact format that would travel nicely with the camera.

Bottom line. Can't wait to really use this camera on trips and hikes.

Customer Review: One Sweet litte Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I usually don't get very pumped over cameras anymore. I've had so many over the years that I guess I've been jaded.

But this Canon changed all of that.

You can be shooting within minutes of installing the batteries and memory card and making some of the best pictures you've seen.

The 20X zoom is just fantastic and coupled with the vari-angle viewfinder, any angle is no challenge.

Even though just a JPG format, the pictures are incredibly sharp. The colors are saturated and deep. Control of parameters is simply vast, but not overwhelming. Start with 'auto' and then move up to other choices.

Wait until you try the video! Absolutely beautiful. Play it back on your TV in high definition and you'll be blown away.

The Canon software that comes with the camera is quite good. I usually just photoshop everything, but the Canon software stores and fixes most pix quite well.

I know that point-and-shoot you've been looking at is small and fits in your pocket nicely, but this is just a little bigger and will do so much more. Not many more bux than a good point-and-shoot, either.

If you can't tell, I love this sweet, little SX20IS camera.

Sorry, you can't have mine, you'll have to get your own! :)

Customer Review: Powerful "bridge" camera
Summary: 5 Stars

My first "bridge" camera and I'm very pleased with the results. Like the manual mode since I wanted to move from a full auto Kodak P&S but not yet ready for a DSLR with all the lenses and stuff. Let me start by saying I'm not a pro but as others have already commented, if you expect this camera to take wonderful or amazing shots and all you use is AUTO mode this is not the right camera. IMHO will be a waste to use this in AUTO mode since it was built for a lot more than that.

Powerful zoom, friendly user menu screens, easy access to most frequent settings (when you get used to it). I separately purchased the filter adapter from Lensmate and have now the option to use UV and polarizing filters on it. To save a couple of bucks I ordered some chinese manual flashes and they work just great with this camera. I also purchased a Cactus V4 set for wireless flash photography and have had no problems at all.

Bottom line: this camera will allow you to explore your creative side using the manual settings and powerful zoom with nice quality pictures after spending enough time reading the manual and getting used to it but in the other hand will disappoint you if all you do is use AUTO mode or expect "$1500-pro-camera" photos just by using it out of the box.

Customer Review: Canon has another good versatile camera
Summary: 5 Stars

After owning the Canon S3IS for about 3 years. This was an easy transition and takes great HD video, increased my zoom from 12X to 20X, and increased resolution from 6 to 12 mega pixels. All said, it took great pictures at the football game using zoom on full power many times, and as good as good as the video was on my old Canon, this was even better. I considered the Sony and Nikon because of faster continuous shooting, but I was surprised this Canon still gave me about 3 pictures every 2 seconds which actually worked out better than I expected. This is a little bulkier than my old camera, but it still fits in the compact carrying case I have. This camera has all the popular auto functions and programmable functions as well, and has a fill-flash that works well with different outside shadow challenges.

The lense cap is a squeeze mounted cap that I only wish could be attached to the camera so it won't get lost. I already found that I had misplaced it in a pocket on one occassion, but have been much more careful since. I will continue to enjoy this zoom feature as I used this in a couple of weeks at my daughter's graduation. I highly recommend this if you want something more than a pocket camera and can take advantage of the 20X zoom.

Customer Review: Best Camera I have Ever Owned..!
Summary: 5 Stars

the easy of use, the ability to save custom settings, the optical zoom range, the articulating LCD screen, the high definition video capability, steady shot...the macro shot...i'm running out of breath...

My point is that the features this camera has is as close as you can get to a full blown slr without having to carry multiple lenses, filters and all the other acutraments that an slr requires to reach it's potential.

The built of the camera is totaly solid. It feels sturdy. The workmanship is first class. The playback menus are truly noteworthy. Zooming and cropping your pictures is as easy as can be. The video playback menu is stellar. Most cameras its push to start playback, push to stop. The SX20IS has a full ranged menu that includes playback, pause slow mo, ffw, rew, advance to last frame, go back to first frame. It is the most extensive I have ever seen.

The price is as good as it gets. and with Amazon prime, it doesn't get any better than that. The only drawback was the lens cover. With such an outstanding product, greter care should have been placed to protect a critical element of your investment.

Bottom line, this camera is an excellent investment if you care about preserving your memories.
