Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PowerShot SX210IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 14x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD - BlackCustomer Review: Tiny tripod (use it) Summary: 5 Stars
Use a tiny tripod (one came with my camera) to hold the camera with your left hand (so that you don't accidently put your finger over the flash). This helps. People have talked about shutter lag time, but I think it's just fine. Part of photography is, after all, anticipating the action, a fraction of a second, just before it happens. Part of photography is holding your camera steady and sometimes I even have to hold my breath when I take a shot so as to not shake. You have to learn to look out for the most important moment with any camera from any price point.
I have owned a Canon SLR (professional) and I stopped using it after a few years of working with it, because the focus wasn't all that sharp and the ISO and grain wasn't all that good for indoor or night sports. I switched to a Nikon SLR (profesional) and the focus is noticeably sharper and the ISO and grain was amazing in low light situations making for great non-flash indoor and night sports photos and it has been my camera of choice when I work for the newspapers.
Unfortunately, whatever I buy these days, even if I spend the thousands of dollars on both of the above cameras, both the Canon and Nikon (professional SLR's) needed to be shipped for repairs within the first few years. I don't have a heavy workload (only 1-4 jobs a week generally, depending on the season) and I treat my cameras well. Most recently, I had to ship out my Nikon for repairs and even though I have worked for the newspapers for the past 5 years, I never spent the extra money on a small backup camera. But, I needed to finally get a small backup camera, so I could still do work while my camera was being repaired....
I have changed my plan about cameras. Instead of spending thousands on cameras that seem to need repairs with break within the first few years anyway (repairs thay may start going beyond my extended warranties), I have decided that I'm probably going to have to buy several smaller backup cameras and use them more often than my professional cameras (I still depend on my Nikon SLR for championship football games at night ofcourse and I love the camera overall and I hope it lasts me a very long time) and I will need to pull it out of the closet for just such challenging occassions. But, my plan about cameras, will probably be, to buy smaller backup cameras more frequently every few years (since the technology changes so fast anyway) and to use them more often for less demanding jobs. This way, every few years, I will be spending another $400 on a new camera, instead of spending another $4,000.
In Summary. I used a professional Canon camera then I switched to a professional Nikon camera (I never used a smaller backup camera for the last five years that I've worked for the newspapers). Both brands of professional cameras needed repairs within the first few years, but overlooking that, I have found the professional Nikon to be a superior product overall. While my professional Nikon was shipped out and getting repairs, I needed to buy a smaller backup camera to hold me over, so I could keep working for the newspaper, but not have to spend too much money on it. I went to Best Buy and I had a choice between Canon or Nikon in the $150 dollar range and I chose the Nikon Coolpix S3000 which was kind of a dissapointment and it was not performing that well (but I have to keep in mind the low price point) and even thought it's new, I stopped using it after just a few photo jobs. I considered moving up to a higher price point.
I just spent $300 on the Canon Powershot SX210 based on others reviews and this was well worth the extra $150.... I bring it with me wherever I go and it helps me to get the job done and it has the necessary features I need and it's a fine camera for the price point. I seem to capture more candids because people don't gawk at me or pose for me as much (they think I'm somebody's mother or a tourist, and they don't see my professional equipment or stare at it, and they don't realize I'm working for the newspaper) and this if fine for everyday jobs that aren't that demanding (like christmas tree decorating). I will be testing the Canon Powershot SX210 out further, to see if it can hold up to the demands of a college photojournalism class that I will be attending this Spring. And if anything goes wrong and if this camera needs repairs too someday, atleast I know I'll have the money to get something else....
People say, that in photography, equipment doesn't matter so much. But I know, having worked in the field, that equipment really does help and it matters. It establishes the overall quality of your shots and the overall opportunties you have to make a shot. But beyond all that, you just have to be in the right place at the right time....
