Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon SELPHY CP780 Compact Photo Printer

Customer Review: Unlike other Selphys with a display: NO trimming
Summary: 3 Stars

I was not diligent in my research prior to buying this printer. The lack of the trimming feature caught me by surprise. The events where I want to use this printer are not given to meticulous framing and composing so I really miss the trimming function. This is a nice printer, but it does not suit my need to be able to crop photos while away from the computer.

Customer Review: Nice printer but to costly per picture
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a nice little printer and very reasonably priced. The downfall is the cost of the ink ribbon and photo paper. It cost over .40 per picture to print. It is a very specialized ribbon cartridge and you have to use their photo paper. I sent it back.

Customer Review: Buyer Beware: Great product, Horrible Customer Service
Summary: 2 Stars

I received this printer as a Christmas gift. I had fallen in love with it after using my friend's Canon Selphy. I printed 3 photos and the print cassette malfunctioned and the paper jammed. I cleared the paper out of the jam, but the print cassette was stuck. I tried to remove it. I went on Canon's website for assistance. No luck. I emailed. I called. No response. I went on their website to find the nearest repair facility. According to their website, I'd have to pay for the cost of shipping and I need a receipt for proof of purchase. It was a gift and it's still under warranty! I don't have a receipt. I'm going to call my folks for the receipt... not for the repair service, but to return the printer for something else!

Customer Review: Buy the Picturemate 240 and don't look back.
Summary: 1 Stars

Hi! If you are reading this review right now, you want to find a good picture developer for your own home or office. So, you must trust me to tell you how it is between the Canon Selphy and the Picturemate 240. The difference is like night and day. My Picturemate finally locked up after years and thousands of photo prints. The little screen told me to check my was impossible. I don't do instructions very well, and I had no idea where to look for the instructional booklet. I went to my husband fussing about my printer. He being a great guy and wanting me to be happy, went right out to the store to buy me a new one. When he arrived at the department for photo printers, he was told that they didn't have the Photomate 240. He was shown the Canon Selphy CP780. He bought it because Canon is always a product that can be depended on to work well. He brought it home. Put it together and started printing the pictures. We found that the Canon is very small and one has to have a long neck to see the picture selection ON TOP of the printer. The Photomate has a stand up viewer and it is so easy to see the pictures one wants to print. After selecting a few pictures to test the printer, I sat there for ever so long waiting while the copy went back and forth putting different colors on the Photomate just prints the finished picture.......No yellow, then blue, then red....or whatever, before the photo was ready to be sent out in its finished color. Then, when the picture did appear, it was long and slim. The tabs on each end had to be removed. The Photomate picture just comes out all ready to file away in a photo book. The ink is also very dry and the prints may be stacked one on top of another. I just found that the Photomate is the most enjoyable printer to operate. Since I had both the Photomate and the Canon on my desk, I could compair the color of the pictures. The Photomate had beautiful, vivid colors while the Canon was lighter in color. I didn't wait any longer. I gathered up all the paper and the box to the Canon and took it right back to the store from which I had bought it. It really concerns me that people are buying the Canon printer and having to put up with all its faults when they should spend a little more (the Photomate 240 is on sale now) and enjoy printing their pictures. The Photomate makes it all easy. The only problem I have with the Photomate is I can't remove the "frame" from my pictures and I must think ahead when taking my pictures so that heads are not cut in half. I know that this frame can be removed, but like I said, I don't read instructions. With the Photomate, it is so easy to use and the results is better than a lot of professional pictures. I am off the buy another Photomate 240. It is just the best printer for my home or any home. That saying "You get what you pay for." is true with the Photomate. The Canon may be less expensive, but your pictures will be a chore to print and the color will be compromised. Just stop reading and go buy a Photomate 240. You will be happy you did! Trust me!!!!

Customer Review: WARNING: Canon does not supply the driver for this printer if you use Mac OSX Snow Leopard
Summary: 1 Stars

It's a good printer.. IF it actually worked!!

I bought it for a photo booth set up at an event this weekend and was really frustrated that the USB cord was not included. Once I was able to get a USB cable hooked up so I could print the photos directly from my Mac, the printer was not recognized. I went to the Canon website to download the right driver to install. I was very disappointed to find that Canon does not make a driver for computers running that run on the Mac OSX Snow Leopard platform.

This is a fatal flaw on Canon's part. Snow Leopard is a widely used operating system that's been out for almost a year. Because I was unable to install the printer driver, I could not print any photos that night. The only way I could print was through saving each image to an SD card and loading it in the printer. Now, if only I had an SD card and SD card reader that night.

The prints themselves are great, once you go through this tedious process of getting the printer and computer to communicate. But I am incredibly disappointed with the fact that Canon has not created an up-to-date printer driver for Snow Leopard. Be warned.
