Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Customer Review: Canon Speedlite 430EX II
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad I went with this Speedlite rather than go cheap and get a compatible "off brand" light. Quality is excellent. It's pretty easy to use, just pop it on your camera and go. I have only used it for a short time but the quality of my photos has improved dramatically specially when I use it off camera wirelessly. I'm sure there is a lot more that this light can do than what I've done so far. Just need to learn all the tricks and get more experience with it. I could go on and on about how much I like this Speedlite. All I really have to say is if you don't have a flash BUY this. The only thing better is the 580EX II, which will be my next flash purchase. Also the price I got here was $80-$100 less than I have seen it at retail stores. Comes with a nice little carry case and stand.

Customer Review: Great Flash
Summary: 5 Stars

I wish I could tell you all of the neat features this flash has but the truth is, I don't understand them yet. What I can tell you is that I bought this flash to go along with my first SLR (the Rebel XSI) and it works really great. From a beginners perspective, it saves my camera battery and I definately get better coverage than the built-in flash. The reason I choose this particular model over the existing 430EX model is because there are some minor improvements such as recycle time and a metal foot but also because I read that some of the settings for this flash are [additionally] accessible via the camera's menu system. This probably isn't important to some of the pros out there but for me it's nice to know that I have the bases covered for when I grow in to the camera.

Customer Review: Amazingly Powerful Flash at a Great Price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I own two of these, and frequently use them for portraits and product shots (on and off camera). They have a good, solid construction and a very easy-to-use design. The metal hot shoe and locking clip provide security during use. The power of these flashes, coupled with the flexibility of the swiveling head will give you more creative room to work. The use of standard AA-size batteries (NiMh recommended) keeps costs down and eliminates the complications of trying to hunt down odd-ball batteries. I would also recommend the Sto-Fen omni diffuser for an added touch of softness when using this flash direct. Sto-Fen OMEW Omni-Bounce Diffuser

Customer Review: 430 EX II or 580
Summary: 5 Stars

I was on the fence regarding whether to purchase the 430 ex ii or the 580. But the 430 is just what I need at this time (indoor photos in homes, outdoor fill flash). This is my first DSLR flash....I've owned Vivitar for my film cameras. My advice to you is don't get drawn in buy cool equipment features (580) that are fun to covet, but, in reality, won't get used. I figure I will only need the 580 if I get into 'studio' work, in which case my 430 will be an appropriate Slave unit. Until then I will be happy with the stunning results that bounced flash provides. Regarding the complaints of squishy navigation buttons, I concur, but I don't really use them much. I find that I use the camera menu to access these same settings.

Customer Review: LOVE this
Summary: 5 Stars

i have the canon rebel xsi which i also love. the quality of my photos has improved tenfold since i have always hated the harshness of a built in flash. i had taken pictures at two separate events without this flash and how i wish i could go back and re-do it with the flash. everything comes out FAR more professional but without the excess bulk. i love that it has a built in diffuser, just for ease, though i also have the one that goes on like a cap, though i rarely need to use them because being able to bounce the light up and slightly backwards does a great job.
i'm still experimenting with the different things i can do with bouncing the light and can't wait to do another event with the benefits of this flash.
