Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR CamerasCustomer Review: Should Have Spent the Extra Money the First Time Summary: 5 Stars
I upgraded from Speedlite 430EX. What an amazing difference! The batteries last quite a bit longer, recycle time is faster. This flash unit is larger, but feels bulletproof. It has new features designed to integrate with the 1D Mark III camera's interface, however I don't own that camera and can't tell you how that works.
This flash has an improved quick connect feature. It uses a lever that slides over and locks into place rather than the little wheel that you used to have to crank on. It also has a rubber seal to keep out dust and moisture at the mount.
I love it. Well worth the extra money over the 430EX. I wish I bought this flash to begin with.
Customer Review: Strongest shoe flash! Summary: 5 Stars
Gotta love this flash for the power it packs!
I've owned this device for over a year and a half, and along with it, i have the Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter.
There is so much i can do with them both combined.
But just as is, the 580EXII is great for close portraits, indoors or outdoors as fill light.
Dont expect this speedlite to operate like the 430EX and 430EXII with the Pocket Wizards.
The 580EXII isnt compatible with the PW and it cannot really do wireless through walls like the PW. For this speedlite, with use of the Canon ST-E2, both infrared lights must meet in order for the flash to be fired wirelessly.
Customer Review: A Good Complement for Your Canon 40D Digital Camera Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this just before Christmas from Amazon. With expedited shipping, it arrived at 5:00PM Christmas Eve just as promised. One good feature is the sliding locking feature that locks the speedlight to the camera shoe. I had a Nikon speedlight before I went digital SLR and you always had to turn the dial on the Nikon speedlight, and sometimes you did it too tightly. The Canon speedlight eliminates that. The flash worked right out of the box and my digital Christmas pictures turned out great. All pictures had plenty of light and the only ones that were dark is when I forgot to switch on the speedlight. This speedlight is a must if you spent $1,500 for a Canon 40E digital SLR.

Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras
I love this flash. I just purchased it last week in time for a last minute wedding. I was so impressed with the recycling time and the long battery life. It was great for indoor and outdoor use. Out of all of the tools and equipment I have purchased this one has made the biggest difference. I wish I would have purchased it months ago. We plan to purchase a second one for my husband to use when he assist me with weddings. After careful research we found that Amazon had the best price too.

I have never owned other external flashes to compare to, but this thing is a beast. The little pop up flash of my 40D is a joke!
It recycles instantly all the time. My camera shoots 6 frames per second and I can get like 10 shots one after the other and the flash will always fire. Until you run out of juice, you'll notice that takes a huge 3 seconds to recycle and all of the sudden turns off... no warning lights or beepings.
The head turns up and around in 180 degrees. It is very powerful and the light can go very far.
It uses 4 AA batteries, I use it with $20 rechargeables that lats for more than 1000 pictures.
Add to cart and enjoy.
