Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon TC-DC58B Tele Converter Lens for S5 IS, S3 IS & S2 IS Digital Camera

Customer Review: It does what it is supposed to do
Summary: 5 Stars

This tele converter lens works well for a point and shoot type of photographer. Looks cool too.

Customer Review: You need to make a lens hood
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been using the TC-DC58B teleconverter on my Canon Powershot S5 IS for a couple of years using the LA-DC58E conversion lens adapter. Compared to some other alternatives I was shown this gives excellent results. Any adapter that doesn't fit perfectly, i.e. shows play at the joints will be useless.

Even working without a tripod with full x12 zoom, in good light, results can be obtained that approach professional 300mm lenses on expensive SLRs. With strong background lighting there can be red-vignetting seen on the edges where there is strong contrast. The other problem is the following:

As far as I know there is no lens hood commercially available! This is amazing! To use it effectively you must make one since their is no thread at the front to take one from another make. I made a slide-over hood from a roll of thick printing paper/board covered on the outside with black ducktape and black matt marker on the inside This is water-proof for about year and a half in the field (bird watching). Mine works well, extending over an inch beyond the lens holding itself on the body of the adapter by friction for a further 2 inches. I get the right angle for the cone by folding the board around the adaptor and sticking it with fast glue.

Customer Review: Canon Teleconverterl lens brings nature up close
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased the Canon TC-DC588 Tele Converter Lens and adaptor to use with my Canon Powershot S5IS camera to take on my "dream vacation" to Alaska. I found the lens quite handy for taking close up views of scenery and wildlife. It was somewhat difficult to use the teleconverter with the LCD focus because I had too much "camera (or hand) shake" to obtain a good focus. I had better success when I switched to viewfinder focus and could brace the camera against my forehead. When focusing at a nearer object, the picture rounds at the edges and appears circular. However, when this occurred, I could detach the lens in about 2 seconds by pressing the release button and turning the lens on the camera. This was a minor inconvenience. Since the teleconverter merely fits over the camera's attached lens, I could then use it without the teleconverter. The teleconverter lens was smaller and lighter then a typical zoom lens so I could slip it into the pocket of my parka.

Since I didn't want to purchase a new camera + a standard telephoto lens for this once in a lifetime trip, I was generally pretty happy with the system. I suspect that serious amateur photographers would probably prefer the latter.

Customer Review: Great Teleconverter
Summary: 4 Stars

This teleconverter delivers exactly what it promises, for a reasonable price. The 1.5x conversion gives you a focal equivalent of over 600mm, and with the camera's built-in image stabilization you can shoot at full zoom without a tripod. Try doing that with a conventional lens...

The only reason this product didn't get 5 stars from me is that you need to use it at almost full zoom exclusively. If you don't fully zoom, you get a barrel effect from the inside of the converter. Having said that, I wish I had bought this converter back when I bought my S2 instead of letting two years slip by. It's a worthwhile addition that lets you stretch the capabilities of a great super zoom camera a little farther, and deserves a place in your camera bag.

Customer Review: Use the hood !!
Summary: 4 Stars

For those complaining about not being able to use the tele-converter with a filter, note that the hood included with the adapter is threaded for 58mm filters. The hood does not stay secure over the lens, but if you carry a small roll of tape, you can use a couple pieces to secure it.

I have only used this in practice, but came out with some very good, clear results. Like others, I know this is a zoom lens, but wish you could be able to back off the zoom a bit with out getting the tunnel effect. I think it will work out well, though. As to price, it's fair, especially as DSLR lenses run in the thousands, not mere $200.00 and less. Oh, yes, I purchsed this lens from Canon, and the
Amazon price is considerably less.
