Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon VIXIA HV30 MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Customer Review: Great HDV Camera for under $1k (or even $2k)
Summary: 5 Stars

Great little Canon Camcorder. Footage looks great up close and captures to a Mac over firewire perfectly. I've noticed it used (or atleast the HV20) on various Discovery channel shows. Completely agree with cnet/PC World reviews about pros/cons.

WATCH OUT for Amazon saying people buy this camera + Canon BP-2L14 battery + tapes. The Canon BP-2L14 battery is basically the same battery that the camera comes with, IT IS NOT THE EXTENDED USE BATTERY. That battery is the Canon BP-2L24H.

Also wish it came with an HDMI cable, neck strap, and used microSD instead of miniSD cards (could only find a microSD with an adaptor to fit the miniSD). Minor complaints for a camera that takes such good video and photos...

Customer Review: Fantastic, but...
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say? The camera takes great pictures and the camcorder as well. Both can do more than I can, at least it seems that way at this early point.
My basic problem is with the instructions and the manual. Both are inadequate, particularly as to downloading video. You need a variety of cables - to play on a TV, to connect to a computer, etc. One essential cable, to download to a computer (Firewire, IE1394), not very expensive, is not included. A lot of missing goodies. The software is only for photos, not video.
Anyway, there's much missing from the basic camera package, all of which is left to the buyer to determine his need and subsequent purchase.

Customer Review: Excellent Camera for Filmmakers on a Budget
Summary: 5 Stars

Absolutely everything that I wanted it to be. I am a graduating film student and this was the perfect camera to start off with. Not as big and "professional" looking as things like a GL-2 or DVX100B, but the image is better than both, I assure you.

If you are going with this camera (and I highly recommend it), make sure to get a wide-angle lens adapter and an external mic. Those two things make this camera absolutely perfect for everything from home movies and weddings to senior thesis films and music videos.

Customer Review: Covers all the bases
Summary: 5 Stars

I did extensive research before making this purchase about a month ago. Bought it at a Best Buy location for $999 and probably paid a bit too much. Now that I have it, I'm very pleased. Given all of its features and flexibility, its fairly simple to use and the film quality looks great on my HDTV - even for a rookie like me. Just a quick note to Mac users - I haven't been able to download footage to my Mac thus far. Pretty sure I need to get a specific Firewire cable for Mac, vs the USB cable that came with the camera.

Customer Review: A Fine Cannon Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had a Cannon HV30 for about a month now. The quality is extremely good. There may be bias in this statement because I am moving from standard def video from a Cannon S3 IS camera. The colors are brilliant and the low light performance is amazing compared to any other video that I have ever seen from a camcorder of this price/feature set. Personally, I wish that the manual features were easier to use. Overall, buy this camcorder if you want ease of use and amazing quality.
