Customer Review: One Month, Five Month, TWO YEAR REVIEWS

We bought the product about a month ago. So far, we are very pleased with the product. The MF4150 was purchased to take some of the load off of the Canon Faxphone L75 printer and to replace our outdated scanner. (Cat owners please read the last paragraph.)
The auto-feeder is wonderful and after one month is working perfectly.
The scanner and the process to create PDFs is 600% faster than what was required by the Epson Perfection 610 flatbed scanner.
The double-sided print feature is working extremely well.
This past month we printed over a 1,000 pages with the starter cartridge. Then we received the low-toner warning. Therefore, we shook the cartridge and have increased the life expectancy of the device. This is a trick we have been using on all cartridges.
My favorite laser printer is the Canon Faxphone L75 with the FX-3 cartridge. The cartridge would last for 11 months and was able to print about 4,000 to 5,000 pages. I am hoping that MF4150 can compete with the economy standards of the Faxphone L75. If you are looking for a printer, try to find one of these discontinued items. We switched to the L75 from using inkjets in 2003. Our operating expense dropped from $650 down to $75 in cartridges. We had no problems or complaints with the L75 over the past five years.
For $200, MF4150's price is very reasonable and so far we have no complaints.
Right now, we are very pleased with the product. I wish that these review sites would have a follow-up page for one year later. It would be interesting to see how the product performed over the course of time instead of just the first thirty days.
Our cats are happy with the MF4150. They can see movement and attack the moving paper. When our predators are attacking the machine, they are safe from any moving parts. Whereas with an older HP color inkjet printer, it was annoying to see our white cat with green paws. Our cats were intent on killing that moving HP cartridge and occasionally a paw would get snagged by the moving part. The MF4150 appears to be cat safe. If our product testing team comes up with a different conclusion, we will update this review (if possible). For those that think it is would be easier to position the printer out of the range of cats, you haven't owned a cat or if so, that cat was mentally challenged. No idea how dogs respond to the printer.
9/15/08 Product works beautifully. To date, I have made 2,897 copies with the starter cartridge and a new Canon 104 cartridge and 1,680 scans. Very pleased with the product. The new 104 cartridge lasted for about 2,000 copies before giving the low toner warning. The cartridge has been shaken twice and is still working. I just ordered a replacement cartridge (off-brand sold by Inkers). It won't be long before this extension process will run out.
There are a large number of bells and whistles with this product. Five months later, I am still exploring the features.
I spoke with a Canon representative about finding an alternative cartridge for this machine that has a longer and a more productive life. Her suggestion was to purchase a different copier whose cartridge has twice the amount of toner. It is very disappointing that Canon just creates products that for a specific purpose without allowing the machine the possibility to be upgraded. Regrettably, this is the mentality of too many companies.
If you are looking for an excellent printer, try to locate a used Canon FaxPhone L75. It is by the far the most economical product I have used for my small business. Too bad Canon discontinued it.
For pet owners: Our large cat has taken a fancy to this machine. He is very intrigued by its operation. To date, he has not been able to injury the product or himself. He has seriously tried. It is quite amusing to watch him investigate the copier. : )
If allowed, I will try to do a one year follow-up.
2/19/10 TWO YEAR REVIEW. We are still happy with the product. However at the one year mark, the copier started to retain images on a multi-page document and then would super-impose them at random on other pages. For example, parts of page two would be seen on pages 15. Canon denied that there was a problem with the machine. We did switch over to compatible cartridges sold from Inkers (Amazon). Inkers was extremely helpful with trying to diagnose the problem by sending us multiple cartridges to try. Even after returning to official Canon cartridges, the problem continued. Eventually Canon decided to look at the printer to find a default. There was a problem with the mother-board. Canon's techs replaced the problem component. To date, the issue has not resurfaced.
We have been using Inkers 104 cartridges. The cost is about $26. The low toner warning indicator begins signaling around 1600 pages. By shaking the cartridge, the life can be extended several times to approximately 1900 pages. This places the cost per page around $0.0137. The official Canon product will cost $0.035 per page. We use one cartridge every three months.
The automatic feeder for documents works exceptionally well. Very few paper jams. The only negative is that dust will somehow find its way under the plastic protective coating on the auto-feeder scanner.
Paper jams on single- and double-sided copies are extremely rare. So are the instances where multiple pages are pulled into the machine.
The print speed is reasonable.
We have not used the fax feature.
