Customer Review: Canon MF4150 is easier to use and better at printing than I expected.
Summary: 5 Stars

This laser printer worked perfectly, immediately. It has so many functions that I was afraid I'd have trouble learning how to use it, but everything I did was accomplished on the first try. This experience demonstrates that the instructions are easy enough to understand and the machine is easy enough to use, that a person who has never before touched a laser printer can get it to work with very few fumbles or re-starts.

The most striking aspect is the sharpness of the printing. The letters and lines are fine and detailed beyond anything I've ever seen coming out of an inkjet printer. My favorite feature is the both-sided printing, but the reason I went looking for a laser printer is that the ink never dries up. I've wasted enough money on new ink cartridges that got clogged up in a week to pay for this printer!

I spent at least 12 hours shopping for laser printers on the internet (a lot of it at PC World magazine's product review web pages) and this machine stands head and shoulders above every other printer I saw, even enough to make me release my prejudice for a certain other brand. Now that I've had it for a month, nothing has broken or gotten less wonderful.

The price is wonderful, too!

It doesn't do color, but a comparable machine in color costs about $800. For that much money, I can drive to a print shop or e-mail my files to have them printed and snail-mailed back to me, for a very long time.

Revisiting...November 22, 2010. It's been over 3 years and no problems, in fact, I haven't used up the "starter" cartridge yet! The big deal for me is that I don't print every week, and the ink cartridges would gum up every time the printer wasn't used for a week or two. It was costing me $30 to $60 per page to operate an inkjet printer! I probably print 50 pages a year, so I haven't really put much wear on this printer, but it is always ready to go when I need it because the ink jets never gum up. It doesn't have ink jets!

Ps, The scanner part has done a lot more work than the printer part, and it hasn't broken either. I make drawings by hand, scan them, then post them on various websites, by the hundreds. No problems in 3 years, and I haven't spent a cent on this "all-in-one" since I bought it.

Pps, The prices on color laser printers have continued to go down over the last 3 years. You might find a color laser printer for a reasonable price now, but I'm still delighted with this B&W printer.

Customer Review: Just received the machine - Vista User
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello - I just received my machine today. It was well packed and undamaged, surviving the trip well.

Upon unpacking the machine I located the literature & software pack and was pleased to see a Vista driver disk. I read a lot of reviews before buying this machine and it seems it is not uncommon to have to download the drivers for your new machine from the manufacturers web site. Call me inherently mistrustful if you will - drivers can be hard to find, and if you find them it seems there can be 4 different drivers with minor differences, leaving you to question whether or not you got the correct, and latest driver. Downloading can be an adventure, and installation never seems to be as easy as click/click/click. I wanted a driver disk with my machine.

I prepared the system in accordance with the easy to follow "Quick Installaion Guide" and prepared to install the software with some apprehension - we all know the problems/conflicts that can arise.

The software installed quickly and easily - I took the easy route as opposed to the custom install and was blown away too see the software package was 434 MB...No worries however - install took about 10 minutes and was easy as clicking "yes" 6-7 times. No problems to report - quick and easy!

After the requisite machine reboot it was time to connect the USB cable - again the welling of apprehension... We all know the conflicts that can arise, or how a system can fail to 'apply' your installation.

After connecting the USB I heard the comforting Windows tone, and then proceeded to the control panel - the printer was there, and I set it as default... test page printed with no problems.

Now the tests - I proceeded to print emails, web pages and several documents from work. NOT A SINGLE GLITCH!

Print quality is outstanding, the machine was easy to set up, the software installed easily - I'm a happy camper.

Granted, this is a very capable machine and I need to explore many of the advanced features, but so far, too easy, and my initial impression is great machine for the money.

I recommend it, and I hope if you buy it your experience is as positive as mine.

Customer Review: good all around machine
Summary: 5 Stars

I looked around for a while before I got this one and for what it is this is a great machine. I am a student who prints a whole lot (ream of paper just last month) and got very tired of replacing ink cartriges so I went with laser and love it. The starter toner lasted me about a month and a half (filled paper tray 3x) but some of it was pictures so that used a little more toner. There is a toner save mode whell see how that works out. It copies very quickly, prints on both sides automatically; the print is very clear and crisp, replacing the toner is easy ($68) or so and I cant think of a single negative about this thing.

copies: quickly 2 sided if you feed it back in auto document feeder works great.
Prints: perfect no compliants if you dont need to print in color this is what you need-- search around and try to find another autoduplex printer for about $200 dont think you will at least not laser.
someone else had a problem with the auto document feeder guide sticking up; when not using it take it off; it is very simple to do, when you need it put it back-- simple dont know why its like that but for everyting else this thing does who cares?

someone else said there is no outfeed guide-- yes there is it pulls out from the center of the tray and goes right back in.

In short it is what I need and works great set up is easy; the driver is a little confusing but play with it, you'll figure it out pretty quickly.
the top tilts back and will accommodate books easily (copy from glass)
a great machine for home / office / or student worth the money-- the toner is a little steep but remember other brands make you buy a drum in addition to the toner and this one includes the drum so every time you change the toner you change the drum... I was spending about $70 on black ink jet cartriges every semester and $20 on color so I have no complaints about the toner cost I figure about one or two a year for me and no "align the printhead---HP INK JET" hassle

hope someone found this helpful--- it is a great monochrome laser (no color) give it a chance it looks and works just like the big ones.

Customer Review: STOP making copies at the Library!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

For the price I paid for the MF4150, $150 it is a 5 star printer

Bye bye expensive inkjet refills, I should have gone laser a long time ago. I picked up this printer 1 1/2 yrs ago on BF. I was thrilled the minute I printed from it. My husband was speechless when he scanned to PDF. He almost bought one for work on his own dime so he didn't have to keep getting up and down to walk to the printer. There is no workaround for the network limitation. We connect directly to the printer, can't have everything. Yes, I have had a few jams but very, very few and they clear easily.

If you copy at the library or office store STOP.
BUY this printer or one like it. You wont' regret it.

If you need a Network printer -almost everyone does- get the Canon 4350, whichever version of this Canon printer is available to you

Pros:
- Excellent laser copying and printing (compared instore to to Brother and HP)
- Drivers installed easily on both Win Vista 64 bit and Win XP 32 bit
- Easy to use
- IMHO, No better quality laser printer in this price range on the market
- Lots of copy choies, you can even print 2 pages on one
- Canon technical support but they couldn't make it network print
- Full size toner is long lasting (the one you have to pay $85 for when the bundled on runs out)

Cons:
- Cumbersome on menus on printer typically "Canon" hard to hundrstand
- No network support, huh? Such a high quality printer with faxing, scan to pc and fax, pdf scan etc features but the one feature every home user needs - router support is not on it :=(
- Legal size copying for convenience
- Takes up a lot of desk space

*** Wishlist
network router support (I think the 4350 is the network printer)
button for ink density right on the printer - I don't want to press the pritner 6x to get to it

Customer Review: Almost perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

I knew nothing of Vista, let alone 64-bit architecture, when upgrading to the HP Pavilion. When my Sharp duplex laser wouldn't work, Sharp informed me about the 64-bit situation and said it would not be upgrading drivers for the tabletop models (but they'd sell me this lovely $3,000 business copier). Thus began Printer Trek.

Thanks to Amazon customer reviews, I discovered this Canon model was the ONLY monochrome laser that worked with Vista 64 (at the time of purchase) AND met my most important need: DUPLEX COPYING. The printer performs well with card stock, labels and normal 20 lb printer paper. Produces clear, dark text and good black and white photo reproduction.

Pros:
1) WORKS WITH VISTA 64 out of the box;
2) Duplexing [2-sided copying]. Had to call Canon for help initially, but no problems since then;
3) Muti-function;
4) Clear photo reproduction;
5) One cartridge replacement--no messing with toner AND drum.

Cons:
1) Cartridge service cycle is only 3,000 pages, far less than my 5,000 page Sharp, so if you're a heavy printer/copier user, you may want to search for a different machine. We use the Sharp strictly for copying;
2) The duplexing function has not worked in Web apps. Canon said its probably a program problem. I have that awful Home suite with Works, etc. I cut and paste to a document if I need 2 sided copies;
3) Working with scanned documents/photos is difficult. Have yet to figure it out.

The Amazon price was exceptional, in addition to no tax and free shipping. Canon wouldn't make any concessions to match or beat Amazon's price or free shipping to make a sale. Oh,well--Canon's loss!

With the exception of the above negative aspects, this printer is almost perfect. I'm satisfied and relieved that Vista 64 has yet to defeat me. Thanks, Amazon customers, for your helpul reviews!
